Remarks
The main thing that impacted my decision to choose this BASE-U was the rigorous nature of the course. There is ample emphasis on developing quantitative and statistical skills while simultaneously looking towards modern software packages, amongst other things. The faculties belong to reputed institutions which makes the experience even more enjoyable.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum has been designed taking in mind the needs and skills required to build a successful career in economics and the allied disciplines. There is a focus on developing quantitative and practical skills apart from imparting theoretical knowledge. On average, there are 6-7 courses in each semester ranging from core economics to statistics and mathematical knowledge. In further semesters, students get introduced to business analytics and utilize R and Python for the same. There are ample amount of electives to choose from, including allied disciplines. There is a diverse faculty that has pursued their education from reputed institutes across the globe including the University of California, University of Essex, IIT Bombay, IGIDR, Madras School of Economics, etc. The faculty is always open to suggestions and welcomes new ideas.
Internships Opportunities
The first batch of BSc got to intern at numerous reputed organizations including ABB, Bosch, Canara Bank, Koch Industries, IIFT, ISEC, etc. However, the mandatory internship requirement for BSc students was waived off so there is no record for other batches. Currently, the internship process for the first MSc batch is underway and we have been told that they are roping in an even higher number of reputed organizations, the details of which would be released soon.
Placement Experience
There is a mandatory internship for students during the summer break after their 1st year of MSc. BASE Placement Cell (BPC) is responsible to look after the placement and internship opportunities for the students. However, the students need to opt-in for their service or they can handle it on their own. The first batch will graduate in the year 2022 and hence there is no placement record for the same.
Fees and Financial Aid
The annual fees is around 1lakh in the first year and then gradually increases up to 1.5lakh in the 5th year. This does not include the mess fees. As of now, there is only one scholarship scheme announced. 3 students (2 general, 1 reserved) shall get a scholarship worth 5k per month in the final year of their MSc, based on their performance in the first year of MSc.
Campus Life
The infrastructure is really well developed. The campus houses a dedicated students' centre, auditorium, library apart from the academic and residential blocks. However, because of covid-19 we haven't been able to have a first-hand experience yet. There is an annual guest lecture series where renowned experts provide insights to the students. There are also numerous co-curricular events like policy analysis, case studies, etc.
Hostel Facilities
It is a residential course, so it is compulsory for the students to reside in the university's hostel. The approx cost of hostel room rent and electricity is ~20k (annual) and is included in the annual fees payable to the university. Apart from that, the mess fees needs to be paid on a pro-rata basis each month.
