Remarks

Good Aspect-Nice Teaching by experienced professors, big campus(Around 2100 Acres), Good amount of societies, clubs, and associations, Good exposure Bad Aspect-High fees if you are from general quota, Fewer companies come for placements in core departments, Curriculum is highly loaded for some days Admission process- You have to qualify JEE-Advanced examination to take admission, Admission is through JoSAA(Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counselling which started from 1st October till 15th October in 2020. I preferred this college because of its good exposure, big campus, many societies, clubs, and groups, and also IIT Kharagpur is the only IIT to have a department in food engineering, so I chose this over other IITs and other colleges.

Course Curriculum Overview

2.5

Since I wanted to do food engineering and only one IIT i.e. IIT Kharagpur has this course, so I went for it. There are about 500 professors in IIT Kharagpur with more than 4 years of experience and there are around 10000 UG students so the faculty: student ratio for UG students is nearly 1:14. Some faculties do not interact with students much so there is a communication gap. Also, there is a large strength of students in one section which decreases the one-to-one interaction between professors and students decreases. Faculties are highly qualified and expert in their fields, although some students are not able to understand from their teaching methods and they study on their own. My online semester started from 1st December, 2020 and the end semester examinations got finished by 12th march, so a usual 4.5 month semester was completed in 3.5 months. Since navigation between questions wasn't allowed in the exams, it was highly difficult to pass.

Internships Opportunities

0.5

I am in my first year The on-campus internship offers start from 3rd year if you are from a 4-year course and from 4th year if you are from 5-year course The stipend is around 50000 and top companies like Google, Microsoft, Facebook, etc give these offers. Projects are basically on coding and web development. Some companies also hire interns for consultancy.

Placement Experience

4

If you are from a single degree course i.e. BTech, then you become eligible after the 8th semester and if you are from an integrated MSc course or MTech course, then you become eligible after the 10th semester for campus placements. Many companies offer good placements to students of IIT Kharagpur. some of them are Google, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Facebook, etc, Although these companies prefer students who have good knowledge of coding and they give a minimum package of 20 lakh per annum. Good companies for core departments like chemical, civil, mechanical and others are quite less and generally offer a package of 9-12 lakhs. There were 30 international job offers too including Japan, the USA, Germany, etc. As per 2020, the highest domestic package was offered by Microsoft which was more than 40 Lakhs. The average package was 14 Lakhs. Nearly 90% of students were placed. My plan is to get a job in my core department.

Fees and Financial Aid

For students in general quota, the fees is quite high. Even in this online semester, the tuition fee was more than 1.1 Lakh, and the maintenance fee is 20000. So, for 2 semesters(i.e. 1 year), the total fees is more than 2.5 lakhs in which the hostel fees is not included. If the family income is less than 5 lakh per annum, then the tuition fee is halved and if it is less than 1 lakh per annum, then you don't have to pay the tuition fees. Scholarships are available for all students with income less than 5 Lakh/year. One of them is the MCM scholarship which returns 45000 of your money spent on tuition fees. A student loan is also available at 6.56% rate per year which is applied only on hostel fees and not the tuition fees. Since I am in my first year I haven't got a job.

Campus Life

1

Springfest is the annual fest that is conducted around the last week of January for 4-5 days and Kshitij is the tech fest that is conducted around the month of May. There are more than 2 lakh books in the library. The classrooms are quite large, have enough space, have a good infrastructure and are fully air-conditioned. All sports are available in each hostel of IIT Kharagpur. We also have inter-hostel gaming championships. There are more than 40 groups and societies in IIT Kharagpur. E-cell, Business Club, Research Groups, Kharagpur Investment Group, Music societies, dramatic societies, dance society, Student Welfare Group and Institute Wellness Group are some of the most popular ones.

Hostel Facilities

2

Three-person per room for the first years. Here, Hostels are known by the name of Hall of Residence. Since I haven't lived in my hostel so I cannot say anything about its messy food but as heard from seniors, it is not good. You are allotted hostels as per ERP(Enterprise Resource Planning), although most of the freshers are allotted the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hall of Residence as this hall can accommodate almost all the freshers.

Other Applied Colleges

BITS Pilani, Goa Campus | ECE

Seeing better placements, good startup funding and a high scope in my course offered in IIT Kharagpur, I didn't opt for BITS Goa.

The campus placements happen in final year of the course. There is a well established placement cell to conduct the on-campus placements. Many well renowned companies visit our college namely Microsoft, Google, TI, TSL, PWC, ICICI, ABG. L&T, etc. The highest package was 50LPA and the average was around 9LPA. Over 90% students got placed from across every department and details of the placement is also available in the college official website. I have gotten a job from the on-campus drive to a core company.

The placements of our college are below average. Studies for placement are more or less relevant from second semester. companies like tcs, amazon etc do visit our campus however very few are selected with package above 4-5 LPA. Most of the students seek out for higher studies and that's my plan too.

It's my decision from class 12 that I will do civil engineering, so I chose the civil branch, the course curriculum is well and the teaching level is good but the main problem is lab, there is very limited classes for lab, so I think they should improve there.

Placement Experience:

After the 6th semester, the students are eligible for placements. Mass recruiters like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Accenture, Capgemini, etc visit every year and pick up 80-100 students per company. Other companies like Amazon, Thoughtworks, Etc also visit the college. The highest package offered by our college is 15LPA by Thoughtworks. Every year around 75-80% of students get placed on campus. I plan to get a good job work for 2-3 years and then apply for Masters. Overall the placement is very nice in this college.
