All about NIT Srinagar

National Institute of Technology Srinagar (NITSRI) one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology in India and one of the 8 premier Technical Institutions established in India back in 1960s. It is one of the best Engineering Institution in Northern part of India. NIT Srinagar has one of the most beautiful campuses in all of India. It is one of the most reputed Engineering Institute in Northern India. I chose NIT Srinagar because of the Placements in CS/IT department. Companies and Govt. PSUs like Microsoft, TCS, IBM, Infosys, GAIL, etc. visit for Placements. The brand Value and the legacy of NIT Srinagar makes it better than many other Engineering Colleges. The Peaceful environment of NIT Srinagar makes a place to develop adequate skills for the corporate world as well as other aspects of life. A huge and beautiful campus with each and every facility whether it is Sports or education attracts students. For students from J&K it is a hub of quality technical education.

I chose Information Technology because of the decent Placement records in CS/IT department. All the faculty members in Information Technology Department are well qualified. Most of the Faculty members hold PHDs or Masters Degree from IITs, Reputed foreign Universities and many other Top Institutions. Faculty at NIT Srinagar is very decent and always ready to help students. The faculty:student ratio is also pretty decent. The Course Curriculum and Faculty at NIT Srinagar always tries to focus on practical applications and explanations for every subject which boasts enthusiasm among students. Mid Term Examination is conducted once a Semester and it is easy to score in Mid term if you have your concepts cleared. Assignments make up the Internal Assessment part of the curriculum along with midterm. The End term Examination is conducted at the fall of every semester and is a bit difficult than midterm but you will clear it easily if you have studied well.

NIT Srinagar offers decent Internship opportunities both off campus and on campus. Many Tech companies like Samsung R&D( Stipend of 50k per month), and govt institutes like IISC banglore , IITs and many more offer internships at NIT Srinagar. The eligibility is criteria for each company is different but a minimum CGPA of 6.0 is common that companies requires. In Tech companies , Coding rounds and technical interviews are held for selection. In some cases , Companies also offer PPO (Pre-Placement Offers) based on their performance during the internship. New Technologies and Interactive projects are taken up during the internships so that the students keep up with the corporate world and get hands-on experience. Many students go for off-campus Internships at their own end. Overall the internship opportunities offered by the college are less at NIT Srinagar and can be improved.

Students are eligible for campus placements in their 4th year ie. 7-8th semester. All the major recruiters like TCS, Infosys, IBM, Samsung, L&T, Lowes, GAIL, NHPC, and many Govt. PSUs visit the campus for recruitment. A product-based giant like Microsoft has also visited the campus for placement. Average Package of all the branches is around 6-7 lac and for CS/IT the avg package is 11-12 lacs. The highest package last year was of 22 lacs offered by GAIL India to a student from mechanical engineering. 3 students from CS/IT and one from ECE were offered a package of 19 lacs by Lowes India. Many students go for higher studies to top foreign Universities and some in India's top Institutes.

The Fees of the UG program per semester are 68900 (Non-refundable) + 7000 (Refundable one-time payment) at the time of admission. 1. Rs 65600 ( Rs 62500 tution fees + other charges 3100) for GEN/OBC/EWS (Family income > 5 lacs) 2. Rs 3100 ( Tution fees Nil + 3100 other charges) for SC/ST/PWD. 3. Rs 3100 ( Tution fees Nil+ 3100 other charges) for GEN/OBC/EWS (Family income < 1lacs). 4. Rs 23933 ( Tution fees 20833 + 3100 other charges) for GEN/OBC/EWS (Family income between 1 lacs and 5 lacs) Additional 7000 Rs per year is to be paid by student which accounts for hostel+electricity+mess charges. There are various scholarships for students who perform exceptionally well in the academics and score a nice GPA and some financial assistance is given to students from backward classes and family income.

The campus of NIT Srinagar is located at the banks of Dal Lake and in the prime area of Srinagar city. NIT Srinagar has a huge and lush green campus of around 60-70 acres equipped with all facilities. The college has a highly equipped library with books covering all the aspects of education and computer services. NIT Srinagar has decent lecture halls for classes to be conducted. Technical fest named Techvaganza is held once a year around featuring J&K biggest hackathons, Gaming events, Guest lectures, and much more fun events. Small Cultural events are also conducted throughout the year. The College has excellent sports facilities. A new sports complex is under construction which will boast every sport efficiently. The student represents the college at various National sporting events like Inter NIT Sports meet and many more. The gym is also available in the college for fitness freaks. Many coding clubs, cultural clubs, sports clubs, and Organisations like IEEE actively work in the college.

Hostel's facility at NIT Srinagar is pretty decent. The first-year students are given a room in sharing with four students. The rooms are provided with a study table, almirah and bed. The hostels are equipped with hot water facilities for the ease of students in a chilly place like Srinagar. Hostel form is to fill up if a student opts one with some amount of security money. Recently, the Construction of the Megahostel complex has given a boost to Accommodation facilities at NIT Srinagar. Mess is available inside the college which offers three meals a day with light snacks in the evening. The food is not so good and not so bad. It is good enough.
