Remarks
Government Engineering College, Thrissur is one of the most reputed and trusted colleges in my state. For my entrance rank, it was the best option for me. So I chose it without a second thought. GECT provides a great atmosphere for both academic and non-academical activities. There is no need to bother or fear to rag. All seniors are friendly and supportive. Also, there is a college union to address the problems of students. The college is situated near to the railway station as well as a bus stand for easy transportation. I don't think there are many bad aspects to note in this college. There is no one here who keeps pushing you. It is your choice to live your life. You can utilize the opportunities of the college or just waste them. So the ball is on your court. Make it count The admission process was smooth. There are students from the college union to help the newcomers throughout the process including hostels. I searched the placement results on the college website before admission.
Course Curriculum Overview
To be honest, the course curriculum is a bit outdated. Don't expect to get spoon-fed all the things you need. Most of the time you have to self-learn various things. I didn't have any particular interest in electrical engineering. I chose this branch because it was the best for my rank. Now I am in my third year and thanks to the covid 19, I am still a rookie when it comes to converting the theoretical concepts into practice. And if you feel that it's not your cup of tea, please try to learn something extra or do some courses in your free time so that you won't regret it later. There are enough facilities in all branches that are well qualified and supportive for students. Most of them are from NIT and IIT with vast experience in the subject. As it is a government college, don't expect them to come and teach you everything. If you have any doubts, you must ask to get a response most of the time. In my experience, don't worry about exams. It is not hard to pass even if you learn okay-ish.
Internships Opportunities
Internships are available. But it depends on your skills and attitude to get selected. Always choose internships with stipend. Check your email regularly. If there are opportunities, you will get mail from the college regarding the details of the program. You can apply if it is your field of interest. Also, there are various workshops and webinars available which are less expensive. Don't expect to get a job with just academics. Try to learn extra and attend non-academical events also. Opportunities are everywhere and make use of it.
Placement Experience
Placement activities starts from third year onwards. Just make sure you have a good cgpa. Don't worry. There is no need to get OS grade in all subjects. Most of the companies are from IT field for the placements like Infosys, TCS, Wipro etc. We had 400+ offers last year. If you are looking for placement irrespective of branch, always opt for circuit branches (EEE, ECE, CS). Chances of getting job is high through placement. Highest package was around 17LPA and you can expect an average package of 4.5LPA through placement. There are various activities from Placement cell to shape you for the selection process. If you are aiming for IT sector, practice coding from the second year. Solve problems from some online websites like Hackerrank or Codechef. Also keep focus on the aptitude test also. After getting the degree, you have various choices. You can go for placement or you can go for higher studies or you can focus on competitive exams. Just follow your dreams
Fees and Financial Aid
It is a government college. So you can expect various scholarships and policies that can cover you. Unfortunately, I am from General category. So I don't know the details. There are various scholarships like egrantz, minority scholarship, SBI scholarship etc for the students who are in need. Fees are also bearable and around 8k-9k. We had a hike in this sem about 5% by the way. In terms of hostel, if you are far from college, you can opt for the college hostel. If you are lucky and have good marks, you will get the admission. The hostel fees are very cheap and you can have great food for less cost. Accomodation is only around 200 rs and food cost is per day ( according to your usage).
Campus Life
Campus life is just wonderful. You always have two choices. You can come and study in the college or you can come and live in the college. There is no barriers between seniors and juniors in our college. Everyone is supportive and friendly. You can go play with seniors, ask for their help, get their books etc etc. Gec tech fest is Dyuthi and it is one of the best in whole country. It was conducted on February and lasts for 4 days. There are night events which is a must try. The vibe is just on another level. Trust me???? Speaking of library, to be honest, I haven't used it properly. But if you are interested, you can take the book of your choice for reference. There is a huge collection in our college. After the class is over, you can come sit in the college gallery and you can see the college ground is divided into various parts. Some of them are playing football, some are cricket, volleyball, basketball etc. There are various clubs and groups like IEEE, Gyanartha, Oasis, etc for you.
Hostel Facilities
There are two options for hostels. You can apply for the college hostel. You will get selected based on 2 parameters ie, distance and marks. If you are in college hostel, the fees are minimal. Accomodation is around 200 per month and food cost is calculated daily according to your usage. Overall monthly fees would be affordable for almost all students. Food is tasty and have good quality. You can expect non veg on almost all days. Don't expect a royal accomodation or something like that. Most of time you need to make some kind of adjustment. Registration process is easy. You have to fill a form and they will publish the final result. Then we can take the admission by paying the initial fees. I am not in college hostel. So if you are like me who is in a private hostel, the expense is high compared to college hostel. Accomodation would be around 1000-1500 rupees per month and food would be around 100-200 per day.
