Remarks
IIT Jammu has a beautiful campus outside the outskirts of Jammu, approximately 300 kilometres from Kashmir. It is also considered one of the safest IITs to study in. Known for its academic excellence in the field of civil engineering, I decided to secure my admission at IIT Jammu after my 12th completion. I secured the rank of 7502. The opening rank for the admissions was 7462 for the open category of Civil Engineering. I followed the admission procedure by filling out the admission form from the official university website. Details like Personal information, student life with extracurriculars and other activities were to be mentioned. The application fee was 700 but it could be waived off considering your family income. Also, the preference of opting for the scholarship is to be mentioned in the form itself with relevant details. Along with that, whether the students wants a merit based or a need based scholarship is also required to mention in the form.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course syllabus of civil engineering is a fine amalgamation of economical engineering and live projects. We were taught modules like Coastal and ocean engineering, Construction engineering, geotechnical engineering, fire protection engineering, materials engineering, hydraulic engineering, structural analysis, soil mechanics, IT and CAD applications, and case studies about electrical technology. Not only that, we have one-on-one mentoring sessions with the professors and doubt solving sessions as well. We also had monthly quiz sessions that had a partial weightage in the terminal examination. In order to ensure complete attention to each student, the faculty-student ratio was kept at 7:1
Placement Experience
IIT Jammu had an excellent placement record of a maximum package of 40 LPA and an average package of 12 LPA. 70 placement offers along with 2 international offers were made during recruitment. Some of the recruiters visiting the campus were Amazon, Forbes, Arista networks, HealthifyMe, Oyo, Optum, RAAM Group, Larson and Toubro Infotech, Toppr, Eagleview, Truminds, JBM, Chegg, etc. The students had experience of internships from companies like Ericsson, ABB, TCS Research, LTI, Optum, etc. This is the prime reason why recruiters of IIT Jammu prefer candidates with prior internship experience rather than freshers with negligible experience. During my interview at L&T, one of the main interrogations conducted was regarding the experiences at the previous summer internship during my engineering years.
Fees and Financial Aid
25% of students are awarded scholarships at the IIT where they not only receive the fee waiver but also get a monthly grant of 1000 rupees. These scholarships are merit-cum-means based and are given to students on the basis of their AIR(All India Rank) basis and on the basis of their SSC and HSC grades. However, I was unable to get a scholarship because of my lack of eligibility. Hence, I applied for a student loan from ICICI bank at 8% interest rate. This loan is easily paid after graduation because of the hefty packages received at the placements.
Campus Life
IIT Jammu has a beautiful campus with great recreational facilities and outdoor sports activities. This includes Digital classrooms, academic area, cafeteria, 24X7 WiFi, music room, and indoor recreational activities. We even had volleyball courts, basketball courts, football grounds, badminton courts, etc. The campus hostel is also a walking distance away from the university. There are student-driven cultural clubs like a coding club, SAE Club, Robotics club, Social welfare club, cultural club and sports club. The students even organize workshops for higher secondary school students in Jammu
