NIT Hamirpur, B.Tech Mechanical
Reviewed on Apr 20, 2016

Remarks

Best part was less academic fee that's boon to get mere a degree.Worst part is faculty who should be responsible for imparting quality, skill based and contemporary education is lacking.People are here to make careers but the whole scenario gets doomed. Please impart quality teaching, compare with NPTEL if you want to know where you (faculty) stands.

Entrance Preview

In our time it was AIEEE. Got State rank within top 50 and got Mechanical that was the priority and national rank was marginally short of limiting me to get into other college. So, with no other choice it became de facto.

Course Curriculum Overview

1.5

Poor curriculum, outdated, lack of emphasis to actually learn and acknowledge the subjects.Only focus is to rush through the curriculum with least important to link, co-relate and widen up the horizons.Still outdated mode of assignment system prevails.

Internships Opportunities

No, minimal assistance in getting internships.Despite of MoU's signed with DRDO's and some foreign universities, there mere represent crumbled papers only. So, no direct assistance to students for internships.Students end up getting internships at NTPC, NHPC, BHEL and you know very well how there PSU's entertain the students.

Placement Experience

4

Placement opportunities are cool because of the effort put in by student representatives. All major national and MNC's give students the opportunities.Computer science is at boom.Civil has just recovered a bit as except L&T other companies like Jindal power, KEC international, Technip also considered them.Electronics has to depend on software side while electrical and mechanical have shown good results.TATA power, Maruti Suzuki, Godrej and Boyce, ITC, Sterlite etc are a few names. Look for website for all data.

College Events

5

Tech fest - Nimbus. It's improving every year with great displays of models, prototypes, tech activities and competitions.Lack of funds is major issue that limits our invitation to national and international giants.Ranks good if you look at meager budget, otherwise relating to other NIT's its at par with them.Siminar is case with cultural fest Hillffair

Fee Structure And Facilities

For our batch it's around 27000/- per sem + 15000/- per sem for hostel i.ie tuition fee while for juniors it's around 45000/- per sem. It's certainly lower that IIT's and private. But sooner you may expect the tables to turn and socialistic model of education would be challenged.

Fees and Financial Aid

All kind of scholarship from Merit-cum-means, CBSE, state govt., SJVN, ACC, ONGC etc.Interest fee loan to is also there by SBI.

Campus Life

4.5

Gender ratio 7:1Sports - great and well established (except swimming pool and only one general coach )Debates - no trend.Robotics - developingPhotography and web designing, video editing and image processing are well developed under pixonoids.NIT's have half of seats reserved for Himachali students but other half comprises all the rest of India. Very diverse indeed almost all states are represented.

Hostel Facilities

3

Sports facilities are great.Gym's are ok-ok. You may say good for beginners.Singles rooms for final year students are cool and spacious.Mega hostel for B.Tech and M.Tech are well furnished and robust.Kailash hostel for 1st year is pathetic with it's condition and strictness.

Alumni/Alumna

Not so great, lack of proper monitoring of the contacts with alumni.Alumni are at very good positions globally.

Exam Structure

Exams - testing of rote learning, lack of emphasis on actual problem solving.Very poor approach of faculty to test the students. Some look only for end results while some look at length of answers while some only look for their "words". Its pathetic simply. On student's part, its also their fault also that they don't give a shit on true learning, instead put their focus on making C.G.P.I sound.CGPI is an illusion, not true reflection of your engineering skills. Most of students prefer last night fight and are dependent on xeroxed notes.

Faculty

1

Faculty is of poor standard especially that is on contract, so of earlier ones got through some kind of jack. God knows how they did their PhD 's.Short of faculty is also a reason.Unnecessary managerial involvement and bureaucracy as you know as a trade mark of government bodies.Lack of deep knowledge of subject in most of faculty except a few.If you record a lecture and show it to some expert, he will puke right there.

Placement Experience:

At NIT Hamirpur, students become eligible for campus placements from the 7th semester onwards, and the placement scenario has been quite encouraging in recent years. A wide range of companies such as Infosys, Wipro, L\&T, Capgemini, Tata Projects, and several core as well as IT firms visit the campus every year. The highest placement touched an impressive 2.05 crore offered to a mechanical engineering student, while the overall average package stands at around 10.5 LPA, which is a strong figure compared to many other NITs. The placement percentage remains high, with a majority of students securing offers, especially in branches like CSE, IT, and ECE, though core branches like civil and mechanical also receive good opportunities. The profiles offered include roles in software development, consulting, design, project engineering, and research. After completing my degree, I plan to take advantage of these placement opportunities to gain solid industry experience and later decide whether to pursue higher studies or competitive exams for broader career growth.
