Awesome college

College management is like all other college managements. Passing the buck was the usual game. We knew who to approach for what by the end of the year. There also seemed to be camaraderie among staff and management at some level depending who the dean or the principal was.

I took the K-CET in 1999 and score enough marks in the PCB section which accounted for 50% of the total score along with score obtain in the PCB section of the Pre-University PCB scores to make up the rank that I got. I got the 43rd rank for the state. There was more than 1.5 lakh i.e. 150000 students who sat for the examination.

Great !!! The curriculum was set out by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru of which Mysore Medical College was an affiliate medical college. Divided into 9 terms the first 2 were dedicated to pre-clinical subjects, the next 3 to para-clinical subject and the other 4 to clinical subjects.

Yes, finishing up with internship is a mandatory part of completion of the entire medical school and this happens after completion of the 9th terminal examination. It is a compulsory rotating internship with 3 major clinical subjects of 2 months each, minor posting (2 weeks each) of which 8 are compulsory and 2 are electives and 3 months of community medicine.

This is somewhat hazy. It depends !!! Depends on the things you want to do after your medical school. You could remain a doctor or you could get into school again after writing another examination for post-graduation. Some like myself might want to go abroad for residency training.

No much fanfare. There was fun. We did go out on a college trip once to Coorg and also have yearly college day celebrations. We also had some debates as part of world doctor's day celebrations and so on. There was also a program for new arrival students and a program for the exiting students at the end of the internship.

Fess was not my criteria. I went to the best college which was among the only 4 government coveted colleges in Karnataka INDIA among Medical schools at that time and I really worked hard for it. I bought the most expensive text books for both examinations and for reference. My mother was concerned about the fees and not myself.

I did not avail of any scholarship or loan. I am sure there is the scholarship for physically challenged students and for those good in athletics. There was also a scholarship program for those interested in research although like nowadays research was not mandatory.

Campus life was as usual. There were as many men as women in our college. The college was diverse with 15% people from out of state and from in-state from all kinds of cultural backgrounds. Extracurricular activities were great, labs were, as usual, sports available for those who were interested in sports, debates, lectures, symposia, etc.

I was not in the hostel and so I cannot say. Since I lived in Mysore, I was a day-scholar. However from what I have heard the hostel facilities for both men and women medical students is quite good although little ways away from the college and the affiliated hospital.

There is, unfortunately, no alumni network and senior students are not very helpful since they have plenty to do on their own.

There is terminal assessment at the end of every term and there are 4 summative assessments which are part of exit exam for each of the pre- para- are core-clinical subjects that one is part of. After the final exam, there are no examinations and one can register to practice medicine after completion of the internship.

It was through the CET cell and was a very easy process. I was in the first batch on the first day since I had a very good rank and was also in the General Merit (Apparently the first 42 were also in the General category and not in any reservation). I believe when I was called out the top choice was always Mysore Medical College since I studied there for my Pre University and High school.

Great faculty at that time although there was not an official feedback form (which still does not exist) for teachers, teacher training was non-existent and we relied on seniors for advice on which teachers to approach. Of course, this changed where the teachers themselves took classes and we got to know our teachers first hand.
