Remarks
The overall experience of my undergraduate study was pretty good. The management of the college is good now that the college is autonomous it has scope of improvements. I think the college should focus on getting students job in the subsequent fields instead of asking foe IT Giant and other mass recruiters.
Entrance Preview
I sat for WBJEE(West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination) and secured a rank of 2792. I opted for this college because HIT had a good reputation among private colleges. As my rank was not good enough to get into a Government college I has to choose a private college with a good curriculum and employment history.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose B. Tech. in Electronics and Communication Engineering in HIT. The course was under West Bengal University of Technology. It was well designed and involved curriculums from not only Electronics and Communication but also from Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Programming Language etc. The curriculum took care of all round development of an Engineer. The flexibility of the course helped me to pursue job in IT Industry that I am currently doing.
Placement Experience
The placement cell takes care of the placement of the final year student of B.Tech and M.Tech. The placement cell takes great care of the students by not only attracting companies into the college for hiring but also preparing the students for the interview. One month prior to the actual interview the placement cell arranges mock interview sessions and mock Group Discussions. In those sessions each final year students of each department is nurtured and prepared individually for the judgement day. The cell sometimes hires outside Human Resource Management companies for grooming where college pay for the sessions itself. In those sessions each student is asked to take an assessment to understand the mental and interpersonal characteristics of the student. After completion each student is evaluated individually. They also teach students how to handle stress. On the day of placement the members of the placement cell arranges the panels of interviewers and guides the final year students or the potential job seekers to go through the interviewing process. The placement opportunity is pretty good in HIT. In the year 2015 when I passed out Infosys and Wipro mass recruited almost 250 students in total from our college. Next year TCS recruited almost 500 students from HIT. Just do not expect to get into a job of your dream as once you are placed in one company college prohibits you to sit for another interview which is quite a bad policy for good students.
College Events
I was the head of the robotics club during my undergraduate study. I can tell from my experience that the technical and cultural festivals were awesome in our college. The cultural fest is called Eclecia and the technical fest is called Daksha. In Eclecia huge stars from all over the India come to HIT to enetrtain and during my college time I had the opportunity to see KK, Farhan Akhtar, Amit Tiwari, Benny Dayal performing live in HIT. During Daksha we arranged Robotics competition, Gaming Competition and Coding Competitions with some prize money.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure was expensive but it was predictable as HIT is a private institution. The fees for each semester ranged from 36000 INR to 39000 INR. Which we had to pay at the beginning of the each semester. So I shall say that the fee was a high for someone like me who belongs to a lower middle class family but the fee was exempted for those with yearly income less than 5 lakhs.
Campus Life
The student from various states of India came to HIT to get the opportunity to study here and learn the culture of Kolkata. The students came from Bihar, UP, MP, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Bangladesh etc. The racial diversity, although was not that big but HIT, included students from all religions including Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh etc. The ratio of male to the female student is almost 2 to 1.but in varied for different departments. For example, there were only ten boys in the Bio-Technology department in a class of 60 students. Whereas in the Mechanical Engineering department there was only 1 girl in the class of 60 students. Coloured Politics was not tolerated inside the campus of HIT although students were encouraged to select Student Rep and heads of the clubs in the HIT and for that two groups were formed in the college and other students had to vote for them.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel was good. There was accommodation for 30 students in the 1st year hostel and an accommodation of 90 students in the senior hostel. The fresher hostel was built separately to save them from ragging. The food was not that good in the beginning but after our continuous effort, new cooks were assigned who cooked really good. We also made a routine to decide what food to make which day of the week.
Alumni/Alumna
The alumni network is a bit newer as the college in not that old. The website is built by one of the students and invitation to join the alumni network was sent to everyone.
Exam Structure
The classes spanned for one hour each and lab experiment spanned for three hours although we were allowed to leave the lab whenever we finished our experiment. The classes and laboratories were very frequent that left us pretty tired but it was fun as we were allowed to take one hour recess in between. The classes started at 9 AM and on a very hectic day it took up to 5 PM to finish all the classes. Although it was not the same every day. Sometimes there was scope to chill out in the Common Room playing Table Tennis or on the ground playing football, cricket etc. Exams took place in every six months. It lasted for one week to two weeks depending on the subjects and gaps among them.
Admission
The concealing took place in Kolkata and it was like an education fair. We were called out by our ranks and were sent into a room to choose the college. After I chose the college and the department of undergraduate study we were asked to reach out to the panel of the consecutive college in the education fair. There were kiosks of many colleges and I found the one with Heritage Institute of Technology on it. I was given a form to fill up quickly which included the admission form and receipt of 45000 INR which was considered the admission fee of the college. I was asked to reach the college premises after three days to pay the fee of first semester and complete the rest of the formalities for admission. When I reached the college premises I found it to be excellent and the administration was well organised and systematic. It was a very smooth process all in all. After three weeks of the completion of this admission procedure the classes started.
Faculty
The faculty in the HIT is really good and helpful. The classes were well structured and each spanned for one hour. The faculties took care of the understanding of the basic concepts by asking the question on the topics. There were internal exams also to prepare us for the semesters and the scores of the internal exams were added to the semester score to get the aggregate. The faculties of Electronics and Communication Engineering were also very helpful in the laboratory to conduct the experiments. They always entertained questions in the middle and at the end of the classes. They were also available on the email in case we had questions about the concepts. My relationship with the faculty members is so good that we are still in touch especially Dr. Anindya Sen and Dr. Atanu Kundu. They were relentless in their teaching process and helped us to get through the curriculum with flying colors. I have immense respect for all of them.
