What Students Say
Likes
- The thing I liked was the campus in the first place. It's so big at around 2100 acres and had many great places to go to or to hang around with friends
- As the campus is large, there's need for cycles for traversing around. And this adds to our fun as we even go cycling to the out of campus areas such as bazaars and cinema halls and stuff
- We have lot of restaurants and eatery joints and even nescafe shops at every hostel
Dislikes
- I didn't like the exam environment as everybody will be so stressed and all
- The classes are held sometimes at 8 in the morning and lot of times we feel lethargic as the classroom complex is around 3km far from our hostel and we get tired cycling that much
- The outside area of the campus is not like a proper city and all. It's still underdeveloped
Course Curriculum Overview
Actually iit kharagpur used to be my dream college considering the fact that many great personalities have been graduated from the college. In the first year generally the course is same for students of all branches. From second year onwards the course changes according to different branches. The faculty is well qualified and are having good teaching experience. The midsem exams were held 2 months after the semester started and the endsem exams after 3 and a half months. The exams are quite hard and requires hardwork and lots of efforts for syllabus completion. In first year, we had 5 professors for 5 different subjects in a class of 200. We are given tutorial sheets time to time and we don't need different study material other than what profs teach us in class
Internships Opportunities
Usually in the iit kgp website itself we get details regarding summer/winter internships. We need to have built a good resume related to the job profile we aim to do and then apply for internships. Different companies that visited for internship includes upskill, Adobe, Microsoft etc in varied roles and students got experiencial learning in different companies. They got average stipend of around 1.1 lakhs for the time for which they worked in these companies
Placement Experience
For BTech students, they become eligible after 6th semester or after their third year and Dual degree students become eligible after 8th semester or after their 4th year. Around 80% of them get placed and the rest go for startups or pursuing higher studies or preparing for various entrance exams and all. Many companies like Deloitte, cognizant, ibm, rubrik, McKenzie, Microsoft, Google, apple, Airbus etc visited the campus. Students for various profiles such as software, finance, management, consultancy were placed. Top companies offered highest package of around 2.68 Cr this year and median around 16 lakhs
Fees and Financial Aid
Actually the fee hike policy lead to the fees being quite high. But there's no issue as there are lots of scholarships and loans that students can avail from the campus itself. If family income of a person is less than 5 lakh per annum they ahave to pay 33% of the total fees and those having income less than 1 lakh per annum are given 100% waiver from paying tuition fees. Many people get scholarship from their home states even. We even have international travel assistance for students abroad.
Campus Life
We have an annual fest called spring fest, there's a tech fest called kshitij both conducted during the month of January. We even have a sports fest called shaurya held in the month of October. We have an extra curricular activity in our curriculum which includes sports, ncc, nss(similar to social service), music, vocals and singing etc. which will be graded and added to our cgpa. We even have many societies like the TRS (robotics society), Scholars Avenue etc. and there's even a student media body called Awaaz who also run a popular website which shows many important details such as placement records, internships etc and things relevant in our college. Almost all the classrooms in our classroom complex(called Nalanda) are equipped with ACs
Hostel Facilities
Generally in IITs it's sort of compulsory to stay in hostels. Or else we can even avail stay outside, but hostel Life is a different life in itself. The mess is pretty decent and we get nonveg thrice a week. The food is a bit oily but it's still tasty and all. The hostel fees is around 30000 per semester. We have a triple sharing room and the rooms are quite spacious and stuff
Admission
First of all I prepared for 2 years for jee advanced. You need to clear jee mains within top 2 Lakh rank to qualify for jee mains. Application form can be found online on the nta site. The application process is smooth.
Other Applied Colleges
Delhi Technological University - [DTU] | Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] (Electronics & Communication Engineering)
Actually I was in a dilemma regarding the same whether to prefer the branch or the college. But I went for iit kgp while compromising the branch and I don't regret the decision
