Course Curriculum Overview
I would be honest, I chose this course because it sounded the best amongst all the courses that I was eligible for. This isn't a very big issue as you get the option to switch to some other course after first year based on your test performance. The faculties are excellent. Not rude like they are portrayed nowadays. Their experience and knowledge is incomparable and you get to know a lot just by listening in their lectures. One thing I didn't like is the courses are very fast paced. If one has some interest in a certain topic, he has to do on his own, as the lectures don't provide enough space and time for discussion and debate We have two class tests, one mid semester exam, and one final end semester exams in a semester. (Other than the lab tests, as they are independent of these) For scoring decent marks, you just have to attend the lectures and practice previous year papers, that's it. No extra books or resources required.
Internships Opportunities
From the first year itself you can do internships (off campus) .then from second year onwards you can apply for campus internships. Every other day, we get emails regarding the internship opportunities in this startup or that. If you have the skills you can definitely apply for it. Mostly, we're assigned tasks under a supervisor. The work can range from clerk duty like managing files and meetings to managing social media accounts or designing advertisements. Event planning and handling can also be a major role or participate in group discussions and offer your opinion.
Placement Experience
The BTech and BS guys are eligible for campus placements in their 4th year and it is 5th year for dual degree people. Google, Microsoft, Apple, Goldman Sachs, IBM, McKinsey, Roland Berger, Mercedes, Facebook, Amazon, Byju's, Unacademy, Deloitte, Cognizant, ICICI, Wiley, PayTM, Tata, etc are some of the various companies that recruit from here. This year around 1600 offers were made with 900+ internships. Highest was 2.68 CPA. The average package is around 30 LPA In most of the departments over 88 to 90 percent students are placed
Fees and Financial Aid
There is a tution fee of 1lakh every year. besides that, hostel and mess charges are taken on a semester basis. This sums upto around 1.6 lakh every year Moreover institute provides financial aid to the economically weakers families based on their annual income. One of my friend has availed these benefits and his while tution fee is waived. Regarding job opportunities, almost all departments get 85% placed with many being above 90%.
Campus Life
Campus life is excellent in all respects (apart from the mess chapatis : ) Spring fest is the annual cultural fest of IIT Kharagpur and it is one of the reasons why students choose this institute over others. Many of the celebrities are invited to perform along with various competitions during the 3 day long event. Kshitij is the annual techno-management fest of our institute. It covers many contests related to robotics, finance and markets etc. special guests are invited for their valuable lectures and workshops. College students from all over India come to participate and gain recognition. The Central Library is one of the biggest I've ever seen. Although we hadn't studied any books from the library, it has a vast collection of books and papers of every field. From textbooks to research papers to faculty publications everything is there. Moreover it provides a quiet environment for studying Students can be seen playing almost anytime, be it day or night.
Hostel Facilities
Our hostel is nice. Two people share one room. We were provided with a cupboard, a bed and a study table chair. The room has just sufficient space for these things with a little balcony. The washroom space is quite good. Mess food is great, consists of a balanced diet with sweets and salads everyday. Menu is curated with the suggestions of all students so we get to taste dishes from all over India. One thing is the chapati, it is terrible in the way that it's way thicker and made from refined flour. There was no specific registration process for the hostel, we were allocated hostels randomly and had to sign physically to obtain the keys of room.
Admission
For admission into IITs, people have to clear an exam called JEE advanced, and for that you have to qualify JEE main exam. Every year around 12 - 14 lakh people appear for JEE main out of which the top 2.5 lakh people get to write JEE advanced. This year there were around 17k seats in all the IITs combined (for BTech, BS and dual degree courses). Anyone appearing for 12th board exams or 1 year repeater students are eligible to write JEE advanced Once you've qualified JEE advanced (this time cutoff was around 80 marks for the general quota out of 306 marks), you can log into JOSAA website for counseling procedure. In the whole counselling process, you have to be careful throughout. From filling up of choices to document upload and correction to generation of fee demand, each step requires it's time. You've to pay 40k during this process if you're alloted a seat in any IIT, which is then adjusted in the institution fee. The procedure went smooth but I had to wait till the last round.
