Course Curriculum Overview
I chose this course as this was the best course I was getting according to the last year cut-offs. For theory classes, two sections each of 90 capacity are taught by a one professor. Tutorial classes are taken by Teaching Assistans who are M.Tech or PhD students and the ratio is 1:45 in tutorial classes. In Laboratories, the ratio is far better, which is 1:10. Theory classes are taken by Professors who are PhD holders with many years of teaching experience and sometimes have many research publications in their name. Term exams were conducted timely and for a candidate who has cracked highly competitive exams like JEE Main and Advanced, the exams are fairly moderate. If one studies atleast 2 hours daily with dedication then he can easily pass the exams with good grades. Also some courses follow continous grading system during the entire semester so each classes' performance counts in such courses.
Internships Opportunities
All the big tech companies come and provide attractive stipends of more than 1 Lac per month in some cases. Financial firms where they require engineers also come. Core companies also come for all departments. Consulting companies also provide attractive opportunities.
Placement Experience
For students enrolled in B.Tech degree program, the placement season happens in their 7th semester. And for dual degree, it is from 9th semester. Every year around 200 companies visit campus and around 1500 offers are made in the whole placement drive. Average offers are 18 Lac CTC, while highest offers are 1.5 Cr+ CTC. Around 85% plus students get placed and many pursue higher studies.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees for anyone whose annual family income is more than 5 Lacs (except SC & ST category) is approx 3 Lacs per year. For SC/ST Categories, the tuition fees is zero for all semesters, and total fees comes out to be around 1 Lac per year. Also irrespective of the category, if someone has annual family income in the range of 1 Lac to 5 Lacs, they get 66% concession in their tuition fees (Tuition fees is 1 Lac per semester) and if it is under 1 Lac then they get 100% concession in their tuition fees. Also, institute provides Merit cum Means Scholarship to all those who need financial assistance. Education Loans are readily available and many banks offer competitive interest rates in the starting of the academic sessions each year. The loan process is very simple and can be done in the campus itself within very few days. I myself have taken study loan from a nationalized bank.
Campus Life
The annual cultural fest is called Spring Fest and the tech fest is called Kshitij and both are conducted in the month of January within a gap of a week. The central library at IIT KGP has more than 3 Lacs online and offline resources which include books, magazines, research publications, premium memberships of numerous paid information platforms like BloomBerg, etc. Classrooms have centralized ACs, charging ports, projectors and all other inmportant amenities. There are numerous sports activites going on in campus at all times, and facilities for all sports are present in campus. There are around 70 Clubs, Socities and Cells all run by students. We have Entrepreneurship Cell, International Relations Cell, Alumni Cell, among societies we gave Debating Society, Consulting societies etc. Among clubs, we have Business Club, Dramatics Clubs of 4 different languages, Dance club, Coding and Development clubs, Finance Clubs.
Hostel Facilities
Hostel rooms are spacious and good. Facilities are also up to the mark. We are provided with one chair and table and cupboards for storage. The mess food quality sometimes is not upto mark but mostly it is good.
Admission
Admission was through JEE Advanced, and the eligibility exam for JEE Advanced was JEE Main. JEE Main application form was released in December 2022 and there were two attempts- first in January 2023 and second in April 2023. The qualifying criteria for JEE Advanced was 90.77 and 75.62 percentiles in JEE Main for General and General-EWS categories. I scored 97.55 and 99.63 percentiles in the respective attempts. JEE Advanced forms were released in April End on the JEE Advanced website and the exam was conducted on June 18, 2023. I secured an AIR 6.6k in General Rank List and an AIR 842 in Gen-EWS rank list. Chemical Engineering (B.Tech) opened at around AIR 2800 and closed at around AIR 4800 for General Category. I got an admission to the course through Gen-EWS Rank List. Without the reservation benefits, I would have got Metallurgy and Materials Engg (B.Tech), Civil Engg (B.Tech), Chemical Engg (Dual), Manufacturing Science Engg (B.Tech) at the same institute IIT KGP.
