Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum and faculty members are amazing. IIT Kharagpur is known to have the best ECE department in India. I choose this course because I want to carry the legacy of my father who works in core ECE stream. All the faculty members are post graduates and 60% of them have done PhDs. Few of them have PhDs in multiple streams. The faculty to student ratio is around 1:20 which I think is pretty decent. The term exams are conducted as per the schedule provided to the students in the beginning of the academic year. Till now, the exam dates had never drifted from the academic calender provided to us. I'd rate the difficulty level of the exams to be 8/10. They are not very high scoring. But because of relative grading, we manage to get good grades.
Internships Opportunities
Many companies do approach IIT Kharapur for internships. Companies like Google, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Nvidia, Samsung, Intel offer internships to students of our college. The stipends are really great. The companies I mentioned offer more than Rs 60000 per month. Companies from different streams like SDE, VLSI, Quant, Product Management, Supply Chain, Finance, Consult, etc, come to our college to offer internships.
Placement Experience
The placements of our college are really good. About 9 students got a mouth watering package of 1 Cr+. Students who are in final year of their course are eligible for campus placements. IIT Kharagpur students are known to be hired by world class companies like Google, Microsoft, Infosys, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Nvidia, Samsung, etc. My plans after getting my degree is to apply for campus placements and join one of these top companies.
Fees and Financial Aid
The course that I choose is for 5 years. It is a dual degree program. I will be getting B.Tech and an M.Tech certificate. There are 10 semesters in total in my course. The fees is Rs. 1,50,000 per semester. In total it costs around 15 lakhs per annum. My parents are paying my fees currently. But I am planning to apply for an educational loan from my 3rd semester.
Campus Life
The campus life is really good. The infrastructure is fabulous without any doubt. IIT Kharagpur is the largest college in Asia with an area of 2100 acres. Our college conducts a tech fest in the month of January which is Kshitij, Asia's largest tech fest. And the annual fest is also conducted in January and is called Spring Fest. These fests are 99% student organized which is really noteworthy about them. The book and journals are very well available in our college. We have one of the largest libraries in Asia. Recently, IIT Kharagpur started a digital library so that students accross India can access books. The classrooms amenities are top-notch. Sports & extra activities are really great here. In the first 4 semesters, and extra academic activity is a part of our curriculum. There are about 70-80 student run social groups, clubs and websites in our college. It is a never ending list. These societies help us develop ourselves in various ways.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel facilities are average. The hostels are very old. In my opinion, they should be re-innovated. The meal quality is also average. We will get bored of the food here in not more than 2 weeks. The registration of the hostel is done by college management immediately after we confirm our joining. I am a boarder of Lal Bahadur Shastri Hall of Residence in IIT Kharagpur.
Admission
A student is eligible for this course if he/she clears JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. JEE Mains is the first stage which is conducted twice in an academic year. The result of the student a percentile. It is based on the difficulty of the paper and the relative position of the student compared to all those who gave the exam. The best percentile of student among both the shifts or both the attempts of the academic year is considered to declare the rank. Top 1 lakh students of JEE Mains are eligible to give JEE Advanced, considered to be one of the toughest exams in the world. Based on the rank of the student in JEE Advanced, he/she can get a seat in an IIT for the course they wish to pursue. The admission process is carried out by a body called JoSAA. After both the stages of JEE, the students must fill the priority order of their dream colleges and the courses they want to pursue. Their college and course are alloted from the priority list. Reservation can help students get a better course
Other Applied Colleges
IIT Bombay - Indian Institute of Technology - [IITB] | Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] (Mechanical Engineering)
IIT Bombay is a wonderful college without any doubt. But I wasn't getting admission in the branch I needed. I wanted to join IIT Bombay only if I get admission in Computer Science or Electrical courses.
