A peek into the student life at IIT Kharagpur

My course is Electrical Engineering but in the first year all the students are taught the same course. We have two semesters one is the Physics semester which includes subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Mechanics, Electrical Technology while the other one is the Chemistry semester including Mathematics, Chemistry, Programming, English, Biology, Engineering Drawing. Programming and Data Structures, Engineering Drawing, English are some subjects definitely useful in the further years of Engineering but we are not really sure how helpful learning Biology might be in further years.

I am a first year student at IIT Kharagpur in Electrical Engineering. I have not taken any internship opportunities or projects yet. These happen from the third year of our Engineering (Btech) course.

I am still in the first year of my Btech course. Students sit for CDC in their third year. The average package in electrical engineering this year was 24LPa. The highest package recorded till now is about 2.68 crore per annum.

Financial assistance can be taken through education loans which is provided by SBI in our college and scholarships are provided in our portal from time to time. Total refundable fee costs 6000, total of one time fee is 1500, total of semester fee is 105750, total hall fees is 28855 along with miscellaneous costs it sums up to a grand total of 149005.

The campus life is extremely good. There are en number of clubs and societies one can join into based on their individual interests. Every semester has atleast one fest and the most important fest in our college is the Spring Fest held every year in the Spring semester. Our library is one of the largest and finest in Asia. Many other fests like Kshitij, Megalith are also held. The Technology Students Gymkhana takes care of all these extracurricular activities and the college also provides some great sport facilities with a badminton ground, synthetic tracks fot athletics, tennis courts, swimming facilities and many more.

Every room is provided with a bed, a study table and some common shelves depending upon the hall you are alloted. The rooms are not five-star rated but they are neat and maintained well. The mess food is adjustable, it tries to include both South and North food dishes. Sometimes it might be difficult to adjust with mess food when you can manage with restaurants and canteens in the campus.

The entrance exam we had to clear was JEE mains in the first place followed by JEE advanced provided you qualify in JEE mains.The JEE mains exam in 2023 was held twice and once you clear the mains you are eligible to give JEE advanced exam.The exam tests on three subjects namely, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. My rank in JEE advanced in general category was 4500 and with OBC reservation was around 850. Then for college admissions we had to go through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counselling. There is no fee for participation in the counselling but once you are happy with the choice of the college JoSAA allocates you can block your seat by paying a specific amount as and when mentioned. JoSAA asks you your priority list of colleges and after going through around 6 rounds you are finally allocated with your college. JoSAA also provides float, freeze, and slide options. If you are not allocated with the college of your choice you can exit the counselling at any round.
