Course Curriculum Overview

3

- I chose chemical engineering because unlike popular opinion chemical engineering is mostly physics and mathematics rather than chemistry and chemistry wasn't my strong point. The curriculum intrigued me and the subjects were interesting and real life application based which led me to choose this course as my path of study - Chemical engineering opens doors to careers in: - Energy and environment - Pharmaceuticals and biotechnology - Materials science and nanotechnology - Food processing and consumer goods - Research and development Further academic pursuits: - Master's and Ph.D. programs in chemical engineering or related fields - Interdisciplinary fields like bioengineering, environmental engineering, and materials science - Specializations like process systems engineering, computational modeling, and catalysis. -some changes which could improve the course are: Curriculum: - Update course content to reflect industry trends and research advancements - Add interdisciplinary courses and emerging areas like process systems engineering - Incorporate hands-on and project-based learning Teaching Methods: - Adopt interactive approaches like flipped classrooms and gamification - Utilize digital resources and industry-academia collaboration - Foster research-oriented learning and faculty training on modern methodologies - the timing for exams is they are a bit too frequent. Instead of taking examinations on such short notices it would be better if the semester length was increased rather than giving 4 months of holidays

Admission

After achieving a commendable rank in the JEE exams, I was presented with an array of options across the top 7 IITs, offering core branches that aligned with my aspirations. Among these, IIT Kharagpur emerged as the most suitable choice for me. -Although I had the opportunity to pursue circuital branches in NITs, I opted for IIT Kharagpur due to the unparalleled reputation and academic excellence that the IIT tag embodies. - The institution's rigorous academic curriculum, cutting-edge research opportunities, and distinguished faculty members convinced me that it was the ideal platform to nurture my technical skills and scientific curiosity. - Furthermore, the IIT Kharagpur's strong industry connections and alumni network promised a wider spectrum of career prospects and professional growth. Weighing these factors, I firmly believed that IIT Kharagpur offered the best springboard for my academic and professional aspirations, making it the perfect choice for me. The admission process is as follows: IIT Kharagpur Admission Process: Eligibility: - 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) as core subjects - Minimum 75% aggregate in 10+2 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) Exams Accepted: - JEE Advanced (primarily) - GATE (for M.Tech) - CAT (for MBA) Most Preferred Exam: JEE Advanced Cutoffs: - JEE Advanced: - Opening Rank: around 1,000 - 2,000 (varies by branch) - Closing Rank: around 10,000 - 15,000 (varies by branch) Admission Experience: - Online application and registration - Document verification - Counselling and seat allocation - Payment of fees and admission formalities

Faculty

- Here is a breakdown of the faculty to student ratio for some of the departments at IIT Kharagpur: - Aerospace Engineering: 1:8 - Chemical Engineering: 1:9 - Civil Engineering: 1:10 - Computer Science and Engineering: 1:12 - Electrical Engineering: 1:11 - Mechanical Engineering: 1:10 Overall the ratio is approximately 1:10 - faculties are mostly approachable although some might give you a difficult time - I really preferred my programming and data structures classes in the first year and my chemical process calculations classes currently going on in my second year. Both of the professors here were really chill about attendance and their classes were super interesting They were always open to personal doubts and any kind of difficulties we faced on the campus - IIT Kharagpur Exams: - Mid-semester exams: 2-3 per course, moderate to difficult - End-semester exams: 1 per course, difficult to very difficult - Quizzes, assignments, and projects throughout the semester - Lab exams and viva voce for lab-based courses Failure Rate: - Mid-semester exams: 5-10% - End-semester exams: 10-20% Curriculum Relevance: - Regularly updated to reflect industry needs and research advancements - Focus on theoretical foundations, practical applications, research-oriented learning, and interdisciplinary connections

The campus placements happen in final year of the course. There is a well established placement cell to conduct the on-campus placements. Many well renowned companies visit our college namely Microsoft, Google, TI, TSL, PWC, ICICI, ABG. L&T, etc. The highest package was 50LPA and the average was around 9LPA. Over 90% students got placed from across every department and details of the placement is also available in the college official website. I have gotten a job from the on-campus drive to a core company.

The placements of our college are below average. Studies for placement are more or less relevant from second semester. companies like tcs, amazon etc do visit our campus however very few are selected with package above 4-5 LPA. Most of the students seek out for higher studies and that's my plan too.

After the 6th semester, the students are eligible for placements. Mass recruiters like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, Accenture, Capgemini, etc visit every year and pick up 80-100 students per company. Other companies like Amazon, Thoughtworks, Etc also visit the college. The highest package offered by our college is 15LPA by Thoughtworks. Every year around 75-80% of students get placed on campus. I plan to get a good job work for 2-3 years and then apply for Masters. Overall the placement is very nice in this college.
