Course Curriculum

4

  • The difficulty level of the Global MBA is pretty easy. It is not at all difficult. The assignments are usually easy but can be tricky and tough if you keep procrastinating and do them towards the deadline. You can also fail an assignment if you start doing it near the deadline because the quality of your work will be affected. So start early to avoid stress and you'll be good to go.
  • The curriculum is 90% theoretical. Only the summer project is practical, in which a student is asked to do either an internship or part-time or voluntary work in order to write the assignment.
  • The most positive aspect was that I was exposed to the English and European ways of conducting business and starting a company in the UK and Europe.
  • The most negative aspect of my course was that at all times while sitting in the class, it felt that I was revising 11th and 12th-grade business studies taught in India. The curriculum isn't something which is exclusive (as it should be because it is an MBA).
  • In a day you can expect to have 2 classes. Each class can last for 3 hours. So for instance, the first class of the day will start at 10 am and will go on till 1 pm. From 1 pm till 2 pm you will have a lunch break. Then finally the 2nd class begins at 2 pm and goes on till 5 pm.
  • Average number of students in my class is 250.
  • About 90% - 95% of the total students in my class were Indian students (mostly from south India)

Admission Experience

  • I applied to the following universities:
    • Nottingham Trent University: Shortlisted
    • Leeds Beckett University - Shortlisted
    • De Montfort University - Admitted
  • Received admission confirmation from De Montfort University.
  • I did not receive any rejection from the universities I applied to in the UK. Usually, the reason for rejection for most international students is: Low IELTS score, inability to pay the 50% fee for admission, and inability to provide or incomplete documents requested by the university for admission.
  • I chose DMU over other universities because of the curriculum of my course (Global MBA), location, and discount on fees being offered.
  • Admission process:
    • Conditional Offer: Submitted all my necessary documents to DMU to get shortlisted and receive a conditional offer letter. Documents include: Transcripts for 10th, 12th and Bachelors degree, IELTS result, Passport copy, Resume, Personal Statement, 2 letters of recommendations.
    • Unconditional offer letter: Once the conditional offer was received, I had a few criteria to fulfil before receiving the final CAS letter from DMU. The criteria was: Pay the minimum fee for the course (usually 50% of the entire fee), clear the CAS interview, fulfill Financial Requirements and submit these documents (Balance maintenance letter and account statement from bank), and submit the Tuberculosis Certificate.
    • CAS letter: The CAS letter is the final letter to be received by DMU. This letter officially indicates that the university has secured your seat and admitted you. The CAS letter is important to obtain your student visa process.
  • The eligibility criteria were:
    • Minimum 2 years of work experience is required.
    • Minimum 6.5 overall IELTS score.
    • Minimum 60% in the English language in class 12th.
  • The overall admission experience was great and smooth! An experience I would like to share is where I was offered the conditional offer letter by DMU in early 2022, but due to personal reasons I could not accept the offer at that point and I wanted to defer my offer to next year. I wrote an email to DMU admission's team about my situation and requested them to defer the offer. Without any hesitation, they deferred my offer to next year. They understood my situation, which made the whole process smooth and stress-free.
  • I applied to the January intake. There is no specific reason for applying for the Jan intake. When I was collecting documents to submit to the universities for offer letters, at that time the Jan intake was the closest.
  • Admission process timeline:
    • 1st week of May 2022: Submitted all my documents to receive a conditional offer letter.
    • 3rd week of May 2022: I got the conditional offer letter from DMU. Then I submitted all the documents requested by DMU in order to obtain an unconditional offer letter.
    • 2nd week of June 2022: Once the documents were verified and accepted by DMU, they offered me the unconditional offer letter. Now I had to obtain the CAS letter from DMU, which had its own requirements.
    • August 2022: I submitted the 50% fees to DMU for my course, after which DMU scheduled my CAS interview.
    • Last week of August 2022: My CAS interview was conducted.
    • 2nd week of October 2022: I received my CAS interview results.
    • 3rd week of October 2022: I got my CAS letter. I also applied for the student visa appointment in the same week.
    • 1st week of November 2022: My student visa appointment was completed.
    • 2nd week of November 2022: I got my student visa for the UK.

Faculty

4

  • The faculty-to-student ratio for the Global MBA is 1:250 or 1:300. Since the students are in huge quantity and there's only 1 lecturer per class, it sometimes becomes more difficult for faculty to handle such a class. Some students are not always on the same page as to what the lecturer is teaching and they wish to clear their doubts, which basically leads to the explanation of the same concept/topic by the lecturer to the whole class again, which eventually wastes the time and effort of the faculty and other students. This is one example where the quality of education and interaction with the faculty and by the faculty is impacted.
  • The teaching method in the Global MBA (and I'm sure for other courses as well) is via presentations. The lecturer shows the presentation prepared by them/faculty members and speaks to the students about the topic in detail. The same presentations are available for all students to download through their online dashboard of their course.
  • Honestly, the course content is not at all sufficient to prepare students for the real world. The content of the course seems to be too easy, easy in a way where many a time I thought to myself that even a student studying in 9th or 10th grade would be able to comprehend the course content without any prior knowledge in business. When the course contents are not apt for MBA studies, then definitely the teaching approach is also similar. The teachers are appropriate for this kind of course content but will never stand a chance to teach the actual master's-level business studies.
  • The faculty members won't assist you in finding a part-time or full-time job. My suggestion is
    • Rather than seeking help from the faculty members to obtain a part-time or full-time job, go and visit recruiting agencies in Leicester city centre; they will definitely help you in either getting a full-time or part-time job or will nudge you in the right direction.
    • Visit the student union's website through your dashboard. This is where you will find plenty of on-campus and off-campus part-time and full-time job opportunities.

Campus Life

8

  • DMU currently has 2 operational campuses and 1 yet-to-be operational campus, so 3 campuses in total. This list is below:
    • De Montfort University, Leicester Campus: Leicester, England, UK. This is the main campus.
    • De Montfort University, London Campus: London, England, UK. This is their recently opened campus.
    • De Montfort University, Dubai Campus: Dubai Internet City, Dubai, UAE. This campus is not open yet but will open soon.
  • All the major facilities are available on campus, including:
    • Medical services
    • Security staff
    • Bike storage
    • Car parking
    • Gym
    • Heated swimming pool
    • Canteen
    • Convenience store
    • Fast food restaurants
    • Lawn
  • There are plenty of clubs to join for a student. The student can enrol themselves by visiting the student Union website through their dashboard and show interest in joining any club or society. You can even create your own club/society by having at least 6 members willing to join the club/society. For example: There's an India society that you can join as an Indian and take part in planning festive events for not just the community but for all DMU students to attend. Apart from this, DMU always celebrated not just western festivals but also festivals popularly celebrated on the east side of the world. For example, DMU will have Holi and Diwali celebrations. The tickets sell out quickly so my suggestion is to buy them as soon as they're released.
  • Other activities you can take part in are some interesting workshops and short courses. They offer a variety of workshops and short-term courses either for free or for a very low fee. I personally took part in the startup workshop, which was free to participate in, and took a short-term Japanese course, which lasted for 12 weeks and cost only £25 for the entire course.

Part Time Jobs

  • My friend secured a Teaching Assistant (TA) position at DMU with one of his faculty members. He wasn't in the Global MBA course with me; he was doing a master's in interior design. So there's a possibility that a student from the class can be offered to be an assistant to one of the faculty members who might think you deserve it. If any faculty member likes you as a student and is impressed by your academics, your chances of being offered the role of Teaching Assistant increases.
  • Pay range is typically between £20,000 and £25,000 p.a.
  • Other on-campus jobs that are usually available are staff coordinators, invigilators, and canteen servers.
  • Maximum hours per week that is allowed by DMU and UK government for international students is 20 hours.
  • It can be difficult to secure an on-campus job since the competition is high and the job opportunities are fewer and less accommodating to all job seekers.
  • Students can earn up to £12 on an hourly basis during part-time jobs. Securing a part-time job initially can be challenging. Every international student should be prepared mentally and financially to be unemployed for 2-4 months after they arrive in the UK. Searching for part-time jobs can be tough. The ways to find part-time jobs are 1. Going to Leicester city centre and looking for any "Hiring" signs. You can also speak with the store manager and ask them politely if they have any openings currently, and if they don't, then just request that they take your resume for future reference. 2. Looking for part-time jobs online. Websites and social media apps can help. LinkedIn, Indeed, Facebook Groups, Whatsapp communities, etc., can help you stay connected to employers.

Placement

4

  • Honestly, international students face a lot of challenges while securing a full-time job within 6 months of graduation. Mostly employers ask for international work experience, which most international students don't have.
  • Average salary range for most students in the Global MBA is between £25,000 and £40,000 p.a.
  • Usually students take help from campus resources such as DMU's online portal and Career fair. Apart from this, you can connect with recruiting agencies/companies located in Leicester city center. The traditional way, LinkedIn, Monster.com, and Indeed UK can be some websites that can help students find full-time or part-time jobs.
  • Some major companies that came to the career fair of DMU were JCB, HSBC, and BDO.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • I found my accommodation via a traditional google search. I also used Instagram to find the accommodation where I was living.
  • My monthly rent was £900. This is quite an expensive option. My rent was too high but I was ready to pay the price for the facilities offered by the accommodation. The usual facilities like en suite, wifi, electricity bill, water bill, and heating bills were included in the rent, but what stood out about this accommodation and why I was willing to pay that price was because:
  • I was living in a premium en suite room. In the room we were provided with the washer & dryer. So basically, each independent room (not shared) had its own washer & dryer in it. 99% of the time the washers and dryers have a separate room for the building residents to use them but in this case the washer & dryer were in each independent room. So no sharing the washer & dryer with other residences.
  • They offered free breakfast (Monday-Friday) every week. This was a great deal for me personally. Although the breakfast wasn't lavish or anything, it was croissants and cornflakes. On special occasions we used to get lavish breakfasts.
  • They also have free coffee in the accommodation always.
  • Challenges faced by me:
  • Since I was attending the January intake and due to personal reasons I could not book my accommodation early in my admission stage I had to book during December time. Now December is a time for Christmas and everyone's in vacation mood. The problem is that it becomes difficult sometimes to coordinate with them via emails and calls (since you're not in the UK yet). Due to the festive season and vibes, most of the staff members are either on leave or not in the mood so this factor can be challenging for you to either book yourself in. I faced a similar challenge.
  • Suggestions:
  • If you're an international student booking it from your home country, please make sure to ask for a virtual tour of the whole place (not just the showrooms) so that you can at least have an idea about the place before paying them. And don't worry, you can always ask them politely for the virtual tour via email or phone call; they won't deny it.
  • Make sure to book your accommodation well in advance. And by advance I mean at least 4-5 months prior to living there. Why i suggest this is because all the good accommodations fill up fast, and it'll be quite difficult for you to get a place for yourself. A disadvantage of booking late is that sometimes these accommodations increase their prices for the late bookers to take advantage of their situation. So try to avoid that and if you can, then book 4-5 months in advance.
  • Searching for accommodation is pretty easy, I'd say, because there are websites available for students to seek the right accommodation for them. But apart from the traditional methods, I'd also recommend using Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook groups to find the accommodation suitable for you.
  • There's a service in the UK for international students where these students can order the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom sets before they even arrive in the UK, and these sets will be delivered to their accommodation that they've already booked.
    • These sets include: Dining plates set, Cutlery set, Cooking Pan set, Glass set, knives, Chopping board, bedsheet, Pillow, Pillow cover, Blanket, Towel set, Bathroom equipment, etc. You can customise these sets according to your preferences and the quality is also good. This service was really helpful for me and I highly recommend all students do that, as it can save you A LOT of time and you'll be stress-free from day one.

Exams

  • Exam required:
    • IELTS is the only exam required for admissions at DMU for the MBA Global course with a minimum 6.5 IELTS score.
  • Documents required:
    • Transcripts for 10th, 12th, and bachelor's degrees.
    • Resume/CV
    • Work experience letters from previous company/companies.
    • Statement of Purpose
    • 2 Letters of Recommendation (LOR): Can be either from 2 previous employers/supervisors/team leads or 1 from a previous educational institute and 1 from a previous employer/supervisor/team lead.
    • Passport copy
    • Financial Requirement Documents (Balance maintenance letter and account statement from bank)
    • Tuberculosis Certificate.
  • Yes, a CAS interview was part of the application process. This interview is important in order to obtain the CAS letter from the university. The purpose of this interview is for the member of the university conducting the interview to understand the student's genuineness in studying and getting admission at DMU. The interview is usually conducted by a DMU admissions member. They ask you questions like
    • Did you apply to any other country apart from the UK as your study destination?
    • Why did you choose to study in the UK over XYZ country?
    • Did you apply to other universities before accepting DMU's offer? If so, which universities did you apply to, and why did you choose DMU over those universities?
    • Why did you choose Global MBA as your preference of study?
    • Which is the bus stop nearest to DMU campus?
    • Have you booked student accommodation yet? What can be the living expenses for a student living in Leicester?
    • What are your plans after you complete the master's degree at DMU?

Fees

  • Tuition fee: £17,000
  • Breakdown of the fee payment:
    • Paid £8,500 (50% of £17,000) after receiving an unconditional offer letter.
    • Paid the rest of the £8,500 after the course start date in 3 equal installments. Each installment was 2 months apart from the other. For example: Paid £2,833 in February, April, and May.
  • Monthly Expenses:
    • Hostel/Student Accommodation: £10,000 per year (approx.): The student accommodation fee is NOT included in the overall fee for the course. This is a separate expense that was borne by me. The fee for the student accommodation that I paid was on the higher side. You can get an independent/shared room for much less.
    • Groceries: I spent £500-£800 monthly on groceries (can even go till £1,000). This can vary according to a person's lifestyle preferences. My grocery expenses were on the higher side but normally it would be around £500 for most people.
    • Mobile plans: I paid £12 per month for 60 GB internet, unlimited calls, and unlimited social media surfing (I bought a VOXI sim). Honestly, 60 GB of internet is a lot. You won't be needing that much data from your mobile carrier since everywhere you go you'll find free wifi. So you can buy a cheaper plan as well.
    • Shopping/Eating out: Eating at restaurants/fast food chains will cost you between £15 and £50 per person depending on the restaurant. There are many cheap eat-out options available in or near Leicester city center.
  • Suggestions on managing expenses:
    • You can also save some money by using the Hoppin Bus service, which goes around Leicester City Centre free of charge during office hours on weekdays. Walking around the city is also easy, as Leicester is not a big city like Manchester, plus the weather conditions support walking around the city.
    • Always ask for student discounts at stores (and carry your student ID with you at all times in order to avail any available offers). For instance: My salon, in Leicester city centre, offered 10% student discounts, but you had to show them your student id to avail the offer.

Scholarship

  • Yes, I received a scholarship before getting the unconditional offer from DMU. There's no such name for this scholarship and the eligibility criteria are that if the student pays 50% of the course fee within 30 days of the conditional offer being offered by the university, then the student is eligible for this scholarship.
  • The amount was £1,000, which was deducted from the overall course fee.
  • Many of my batchmates received the same scholarship from the university.
