- Studying at the University of Portsmouth has been a largely positive experience for me.
- I really value the strong industry focus of my course, especially in Sports Management, as it feels practical and geared towards employability rather than just theory.
- The lecturers are generally approachable and supportive, and the facilities, particularly the library and sports spaces, are modern and well-equipped. I also like the fact that everything is within walking distance, which makes it easy from going to place A to B.
Dislikes
- However, there are a few downsides. As a city university, it lacks a traditional enclosed campus feel.
- The weather can be quite windy and grey, and the social scene can occasionally feel limited compared to bigger cities.
- Overall, though, the positives outweigh the negatives for me.

- I think the course curriculum is quite solid, up-to-date, and relevant to the sports industry. From modules on sport business, events, HR, marketing, and strategic management to research skills and operational management, the syllabus covers a wide range of topics that are valuable for careers in sports organisations and management roles. It clearly reflects current industry practices, and the university regularly updates content based on the latest research and feedback, so it doesn’t feel outdated.
- The topics we study, such as digital marketing, sponsorship, sport event planning, economics & finance, and research skills, are directly tied to industry needs and real-world challenges. The course structure is designed in consultation with sport partners and includes current case studies and tools used in the field. That makes it feel relevant rather than purely academic.
- I’ve had some practical exposure through projects and live case work. For example, the course encourages us to work with local partners (like community sport organisations or councils) on real briefs, which gives a taste of managing projects in the real world. There are also opportunities to work with industry professionals, pitch ideas, and sometimes get mentoring from guest speakers. Furthermore, if you do the sandwich/placement year option, you can also get a full work placement in the sector between Year 2 and Year 3, which is very valuable for CV development.
- Core lectures might have 50–100 students, but seminars and workshops have 15-30.

The course is crafted as it's for PhD students. My course is accredited by CIPD so you can imagine the value of the program. Faculties support students in research projects. They provide each student with their personal tutors, especially for research projects/dissertations who help them to understand the research topic properly. They keep on checking research progress, provide optimum guidance on do's and don'ts, and help in completing research projects on time.

My course wasn't very research-oriented (apart from the assignments to be put together) but it's not like there is no future prospectus for that. I did a Junior Research Associate Apprenticeship at Halmstad University, all thanks to my university. Also, there are specific courses such as MRes that focus only on the research aspect.

- University of Portsmouth is the leading university for it's School of Criminal Justice Studies, with faculty that work alongside Interpol, FBI, other international security organisations. I chose this university because of the variety of modules they offer, the lecturers who taught them - some of whose work I have read during my undergraduate course, and the overall reviews about the University. The fact that Portsmouth is a coastal city with most amount of sun in England was also important in my decision-making after spending the previous three years in cold gloomy climate which had an unforeseen effect on my overall health.
- I loved in-class discussions for the theoretical modules and the practical sessions for the investigation module specifically where we got a chance to test our skills and knowledge and got feedback that made learning more effectively.
Dislikes
- There's nothing I particularly disliked about the University. I was studying at a time where the whole world was trying to adapt to the changes brought about by covid so I did not get to experience a lot of in-person events that pre-covid and current students have the opportunity to attend.
Course Curriculum
The course syllabus is very updated as the university has its independent research centres that feed into what is taught to the students. The same content is taught to professionals in law enforcement and criminal justice system around the world by some of the faculty members. All postgrad students have to lead and conduct their own research for their final thesis for which we are given a total of 8 months including time to prepare the research proposal.

I studied between 2021-2022 when the course fee was £15500 but it has definitely gone up now with the inflation in the country.

It’s been 2 months that I have been here and everything is going good as of now. My academics are going smooth and syllabus is being covered on time. I am happy for choosing this course as it is really interesting and is also related to my previous course. The faculty are helping me understand all the details. They also helped me reach the current standard of the student as I am a bit late to college due to pandamic.
One of my friend suggested me this college. He stated that the faculty was amazing and also all the facilities the we required are well and good. The also the main reason is that this particular university has the course that I want to persue which is Max engineering management Head the u had awesome teachers for this course and also I chose that university as i like that place
