IGNOU: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 3 Reviews

At IGNOU, final-year students have access to placement opportunities, which are announced on the university's website. Companies like KPMG, Genpact, and Axis have been known to visit, though the overall placement rate is about 40%. Reports suggest that only around 20% of students actually secure placements. Internship opportunities are limited, and companies typically do not recruit on campus for these roles. Information about internships is offered by the placement department and can be accessed online.

IGNOU's fee structure is affordable, with the MBA program costing approximately 62,000 INR, excluding exam fees of 15,500 INR per semester. The total fee for the course is around 1 lakh INR, which is less expensive than many other institutions. Students from SC/ST/OBC/Minority communities can apply for Government of India scholarships, though there are no specific scholarships for MBA students. IGNOU also provides financial assistance to help manage educational costs, and fee increases are rare.

IGNOU MBA FAQs

Ques. Is the IGNOU MBA (Distance) valid for government jobs and promotions?

Ans. Yes. The IGNOU MBA is AICTE-approved and recognised by UGC and the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). It is accepted for government job applications, promotions, and higher studies that require an AICTE-recognised MBA. Many central and state government employees pursue IGNOU MBA for career advancement while continuing their jobs.

Ques. Do I need to attend classes or visit the study centre regularly?

Ans. No mandatory daily attendance is required. However, students are expected to attend counselling sessions at their assigned study centre, which are typically held on weekends or holidays. The number of counselling sessions varies by course. Students also need to submit assignments and appear for term-end examinations at designated exam centres.

Ques. Can I pursue IGNOU MBA after a 3-year diploma instead of a degree?

Ans. No. IGNOU MBA requires a full bachelor's degree (minimum 3 years) from a recognised university. A 3-year diploma is not equivalent to a bachelor's degree for this purpose. However, if you hold a CA/CS/Cost Accountancy qualification along with a graduation degree, you are eligible.

Ques. What specialisations are available in IGNOU MBA (Distance)?

Ans. IGNOU offers 8 specialisations in the distance MBA: Financial Management, Human Resources Management, Marketing Management, Operations Management, Agribusiness Management, Construction Management, Healthcare and Hospital Management, and Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Students choose their specialisation electives in Semesters 3 and 4.

Ques. How is the project report (MMPP-001) submitted in distance mode?

Ans. The project report is a mandatory 8-credit component in Semester 3. Students are required to identify a research problem related to their specialisation, conduct primary or secondary research, and submit a written project report. The project is supervised by a faculty member assigned by IGNOU. Students can work on a project related to their current job or industry, which is a significant advantage for working professionals.

Ques. I heard OPENMAT has been discontinued. Is IGNOU MBA admission now fully merit-based?

Ans. Yes. As of 2026-27, IGNOU has moved to direct merit-based admissions for the MBA programme. OPENMAT, which was previously conducted by IGNOU/NTA as an entrance test, is no longer required. Admission is based on the percentage of marks in the qualifying bachelor's degree. IGNOU may revamp the admission process in the future, so it is advisable to check the official website for the latest updates before applying.

IGNOU: 2 Answered Questions

What is the scope of doing an MBA from IGNOU? Is it acceptable by MNCs?

Sinbad Chongtham
Aman AroraMS from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) (Graduated-2016)

IGNOU is recognised by AICTE and is run by the central government. So if you are looking for a government job then it’s not an issue. Also, IGNOU is better than many small universities like SMU (Sikkim Manipal University).

IGNOU is the best option if you are tight on budget or you prefer learning while earning.

MNCs prefer a formal education of 15 years. For additional education, you can go for IGNOU. But if your Bachelor's Degree is also from IGNOU then this might be a problem at the time of employment.

It’s important to note that at the time of employment regular colleges are always given more preference than distance education. So it’s recommended you pursue MBA from a regular college. Let IGNOU be the last choice under special circumstances such as a tight budget or preferring distance learning due to personal reasons.

Fees and Financial Aid:

The cost of the whole course was approximately 1 lakh. However, I didn't avail myself of any scholarship. No financial assistance was taken and I got a job before completion of my course with TATA power-DDL. Fees hike is most probably not that regular.
