JMI BA (Hons.) Sanskrit FAQs
Ques. Is Sanskrit a good subject to study at JMI, given that it is a minority Muslim university?
Ans. Yes, JMI has a dedicated Department of Sanskrit that has been functioning for decades. The department offers BA (Hons.), MA, and Certificate programmes in Sanskrit. Students from all communities study here, and the academic environment is inclusive. The department has qualified faculty and a well-stocked library with Sanskrit manuscripts and texts. Many students from JMI's Sanskrit department have gone on to crack UGC-NET, pursue PhDs, and join government services.
Ques. Does JMI conduct its own entrance test for BA Sanskrit, or is it only through CUET?
Ans. JMI conducts its own entrance test (General Test) for BA (Hons.) Sanskrit. Additionally, from 2026-27, JMI also accepts CUET UG scores for this programme. Candidates can apply through either route. The JMI entrance test is an offline exam with negative marking (0.25 per wrong answer).
Ques. What is the seat intake and reservation policy for BA Sanskrit at JMI?
Ans. The total seat intake is 40. JMI follows a unique reservation policy: 50% seats are reserved for Muslim Minority candidates, and the remaining 50% are open to all. Within each category, sub-reservations for SC/ST/OBC/PwD apply as per UGC/government norms. There is also a 10% reservation for Muslim Women within the Muslim Minority quota.
Ques. What career options are available after BA (Hons.) Sanskrit from JMI?
Ans. Graduates can pursue careers in teaching (school/college level after B.Ed/NET), research (PhD), civil services (UPSC/state PSCs where Sanskrit is an optional subject), translation and interpretation, content writing for classical texts, work with ASI (Archaeological Survey of India), cultural organisations, and Sanskrit-based digital humanities projects. Germany and other European countries also have demand for Sanskrit scholars. Many students also pursue MA Sanskrit at JMI or other central universities.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation available for BA Sanskrit students at JMI?
Ans. Yes, JMI has hostel facilities for both boys and girls on campus. However, hostel seats are limited and allotted on a merit-cum-need basis. The hostel fee is approximately Rs. 12,550 per year (not included in the course fee). Students are advised to apply for hostel accommodation early after admission confirmation.
Ques. Can a student who has not studied Sanskrit in Class 11-12 apply for BA (Hons.) Sanskrit at JMI?
Ans. Yes. The eligibility criterion only requires passing 10+2 with 50% marks from a recognised board; there is no mandatory requirement to have studied Sanskrit at the 10+2 level. However, having a background in Sanskrit at the school level is advantageous for the entrance test and for coping with the course content in the initial semesters.
