BHU BA {Hons.} AIHCA FAQs
Ques. What is the scope of BA (Hons.) AIHCA from BHU?
Ans. BA (Hons.) AIHCA from BHU opens doors to careers in archaeology (ASI), museum curation, heritage management, research, and academia. Graduates can appear for the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) recruitment exams, UGC NET in Ancient Indian History, and UPSC Civil Services with History/AIHCA as optional. The course is also a strong foundation for MA AIHCA, MA Archaeology, and PhD programmes.
Ques. What is the difference between BA (Hons.) History and BA (Hons.) AIHCA at BHU?
Ans. BA (Hons.) History covers the full spectrum from ancient to modern history with a broader scope. BA (Hons.) AIHCA is more specialised, focusing on ancient Indian history, culture, epigraphy, numismatics, art and architecture, and field archaeology. For students specifically interested in ancient India, archaeology, or museum studies, AIHCA is the better choice. For a broader historical perspective including modern history and UPSC preparation, History is preferred.
Ques. Does BHU's AIHCA department conduct archaeological excavations?
Ans. Yes, BHU's Department of AIHCA has a strong tradition of conducting archaeological excavations and field surveys. Students get opportunities to participate in excavation projects at sites in and around Varanasi, including Rajghat (ancient Varanasi), Sarnath, and other sites in the Ganga valley. This hands-on field experience is a unique feature of the programme.
Ques. How competitive is the CUET cutoff for BA (Hons.) AIHCA at BHU?
Ans. With only 3 seats at the main campus, the programme is extremely selective. In 2025, the General category CUET cutoff was 277 in Round 1. EWS cutoff was 263, OBC NCL was 252, SC was 222, and ST was 154. In 2024, the General cutoff was 290. Students should aim for a score above 280 for General category admission.
Ques. What is epigraphy and numismatics, and why are they important in AIHCA?
Ans. Epigraphy is the study of ancient inscriptions (on stone, copper plates, etc.), and numismatics is the study of ancient coins. Both are core components of the AIHCA curriculum at BHU. These skills are essential for deciphering ancient texts, dating historical events, and understanding ancient economies and polities. Proficiency in epigraphy and numismatics is highly valued in ASI and academic research.
Ques. Can students from Science or Commerce background apply for BA (Hons.) AIHCA at BHU?
Ans. Yes, students from any stream who have passed 10+2 with at least 50% marks and have appeared in CUET UG can apply. There is no stream restriction at the 10+2 level. However, students with a background in History or Social Sciences at the 10+2 level will find the transition easier and will be better prepared for the CUET History paper.
