The M.Sc. (Statistics and Computer Applications) is a 2-year full-time postgraduate programme offered at the DST Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences (DST-CIMS), Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. The course is designed to bridge the gap between classical statistical theory and modern computational techniques, covering areas such as probability theory, statistical inference, machine learning, data analytics, and programming in R and Python. With a total intake of 49 seats and a special course fee of Rs. 88,000 for the entire programme, it is one of the most affordable yet reputed M.Sc. Statistics programmes in India. Admission is based on CUET PG scores, and the course is offered in full-time on-campus mode.

As of March 2026, the CUET PG 2026 examination is currently ongoing (March 6 - April 1, 2026). Results are expected tentatively in May 2026, following which BHU will open its PG registration portal. Based on the 2025 cycle, BHU PG registration is expected to open around May-June 2026. Students who have appeared in CUET PG 2026 and opted for BHU should watch the official portal at admission.bhu.ac.in for counselling and allotment schedule announcements.

Key Points

  • The programme is run under the DST Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences (DST-CIMS), a specialised interdisciplinary centre supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
  • The curriculum integrates statistical theory with computing tools, making graduates well-suited for data science, analytics, and research roles.
  • The course is classified as a "Special Course of Study" at BHU, which means it carries a higher special course fee compared to regular M.Sc. programmes at BHU.
  • Students are required to maintain a minimum 75% attendance to remain eligible for examinations and scholarships.
  • The programme provides access to BHU's extensive library, computer labs, and research infrastructure.
  • Alumni of this programme have been placed at companies such as IBM, Dell, TCS, Cognizant, and Novartis in data science and analytics roles.

BHU: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 2 Reviews

The college offers campus placements with companies like TCS, Sony, IBM, Infosys, Deloitte, Accenture, ICICI Bank, Cognizant, Optum, Dell, Genpact, and JSS, but the placement success rate is low. This is partly due to the mandatory 75% attendance policy. Students can pursue internships online without missing classes, and the campus hosts various internships, training programs, and workshops.

A special course is available for 43,000, though it lacks scholarship options. Facilities such as computer labs and libraries are accessible to students. Currently, there is no placement cell, but plans are in place to create one, which could enhance future placement prospects. The college also offers both online and on-campus course formats, providing flexible learning opportunities.

BHU M.Sc FAQs

Ques. Is M.Sc. Statistics and Computer Applications at BHU the same as M.Sc. Statistics and Computing?

Ans. These are two different programmes at BHU. M.Sc. Statistics and Computer Applications (49 seats) is offered at DST-CIMS and has a special course fee of Rs. 22,000 per semester. M.Sc. Statistics and Computing is a separate programme also at DST-CIMS. The Statistics and Computer Applications programme has more emphasis on applied computing and data analytics alongside statistics, making it more industry-oriented compared to the pure M.Sc. Statistics programme offered by the Department of Statistics.

Ques. The fees for this course seem much higher than other M.Sc. programmes at BHU. Why?

Ans. This is because M.Sc. (Statistics and Computer Applications) is classified as a "Special Course of Study" at BHU, which carries a higher special course fee (Rs. 22,000 per semester). Regular M.Sc. programmes at BHU have much lower fees (around Rs. 2,000-4,000 per year). The special course fee is the same for all categories - there is no category-based waiver on this component, though government scholarships like UP Scholarship may partially reimburse it.

Ques. What is the CUET PG paper code / subject I should choose for this programme?

Ans. For M.Sc. (Statistics and Computer Applications) at BHU, candidates should appear in the CUET PG paper for Statistics (paper code: SCQP19 or as updated by NTA for 2026). Candidates must also ensure they select Banaras Hindu University as a participating university while filling the CUET PG application form. Always verify the exact paper code from the official NTA CUET PG information bulletin before applying.

Ques. Is there a placement cell specifically for DST-CIMS students? How do I improve my placement chances?

Ans. As of recent student reviews, a dedicated placement cell for DST-CIMS is still being developed. Campus placements do happen, but the volume is limited. Students who have secured good placements (at IBM, Dell, TCS, etc.) consistently report that strong programming skills in Python, R, and SQL - beyond what is taught in the curriculum - are the key differentiator. Building a portfolio on GitHub, participating in Kaggle competitions, and doing internships during the programme significantly improve placement prospects.

Ques. Can I pursue a PhD after this programme? What are the options?

Ans. Yes, this programme is an excellent foundation for a PhD in Statistics, Data Science, or related fields. BHU itself offers PhD programmes in Statistics and at DST-CIMS. Other popular options include ISI (Indian Statistical Institute), IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IISER campuses, and central universities. Students who qualify UGC NET/JRF in Mathematical Sciences or Statistics during or after the programme are eligible for JRF fellowships (Rs. 37,000/month) and can pursue funded PhD positions across India.

Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for M.Sc. students at BHU?

Ans. Hostel accommodation at BHU is not guaranteed and is allotted on a first-come, first-served basis subject to availability. BHU has separate hostels for male and female students. The hostel fee is approximately Rs. 5,375 per year for male students. Students are advised to apply for hostel accommodation immediately after confirming admission. Given BHU's large student population, early application is strongly recommended.

Student Snaps:

Fees and Financial Aid:

The facilities that we get are worth the cost. The computer labs, library are open to us. The students are allowed to utilize it properly. This is a special course hence it's fees is 43000. The course doesn't provide any scholarship. I don't have a lot of ideas about the scholarship. You can avail of the internship opportunity online as there are lots of courses running online and on campus. For now, the placement cell is not there. All the responsibility you have in your shoulders though the chance of placement may increase in the coming years as the work for it is in process.
