IIEST Shibpur offers a rich legacy and technical expertise, which makes it way superior as an institute when compared with IIIT Pune. But you need to decide whether you are interested in Mechanical or CS. Placement-wise too, IIEST Shibpur Mechanical is at par with other good engineering colleges in India.

As for placements, IIEST Mechanical is a better choice. But if you are planning for a post graduation after B.Tech, CS is a better branch for you. You must secure a rank of 250 or less, and get into top IITs for your M.Tech CS. Doing so will be beneficial for your career, and you can expect job offers from top brands like Google and Directi after your M.Tech.

On the other hand, an M.Tech in core branches like Mechanical won’t be as beneficial for your career. IIEST will offer you top notch faculties, and make your journey toward an MS/Phd. much easier, if you are planning for these degrees.

IEM isn’t a well-known college. It is a local college unlike IIEST, which is an institute of national importance. The campus size of IEM is very small. Big companies don’t usually visit small colleges like IEM.

The college tag has a value of its own. Besides, the opportunities and exposure offered by IIEST are immense.

Thus, I would recommend you opt for IT at IIEST Shibpur.

The college offers decent placements and is one of the best in India for research. It is an alma mater of numerous successful personalities. Many of its alumni have singlehandedly started industries in modern India. IIEST graduates have also done wonders in other fields such as singing, songwriting, poetry, drama, novel writing, etc.

The college has signed multiple MOUs with numerous prestigious universities. A few years back, the then President of India inaugurated the country’s first smart power grid at IIEST. This smart power grid can produce energy from a large range of renewable resources.

Unfortunately, IIEST Shibpur follows no CGPA to percentage conversion rule.

Biotech is a good branch with increasing scope. The Biotech Department of NIT Allahabad offers good facilities to its students. The college also organizes an annual Biotech fest by the name of “Biosangam”.

IT is a very safe option these days. It offers good career opportunities. To do well in this field, one has to stay updated on tech developments and work on one’s coding skills. This field requires self-training the most. I am not aware of the IT department at IIEST Shibpur. IT students at IIEST would know the best about the placement prospects.

Both these options are good. The choice depends on one’s interest area.

Both COEP and IIEST Shibpur are heritage colleges of India. COEP was established in 1854, and IIEST in 1856. Here are some differences between the two-

Location- COEP is located in the heart of Pune city. Pune will expose you to numerous opportunities that you couldn’t have otherwise accessed in small towns and cities. IIEST is located in Howrah, 15 minutes away from Kolkata city. Kolkata offers amazing food, ambiance, and exposure.

Research- COEP isn’t inclined towards research, and its students mostly aim for good placements. This is a drawback if you want to pursue higher studies in the future. IIEST Shibpur is one of the best colleges for research. In this regard, it stands just below IISc and old IITs.

Placements- COEP offers better placements, especially for CS/IT. The research-oriented environment of IIEST affects its placements to a certain extent. Coal India, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Texas Instruments and PwC are some of the companies that visit IIEST for placements.

Extracurriculars- COEP has really good extracurricular facilities. It even boasts of a boat club. IIEST Shibpur has fewer extracurricular facilities. However, since being updated to an Institute of National Importance, it has witnessed an increase in clubs, societies, and events. Some of these are- the Kolkata Comic Carnival, TEDx, and the Astronomy Club.

Companies like Texas Instruments recruit ETC students from IIEST at around 15 LPA. But such offers are very rare. They form the highest packages of that placement season. The average package for ETC students is between 5-6 LPA.

Core companies visit the IIEST campus in small numbers. So students look to PWC, Deloitte, and Data Analytics firms like HSBC for placements. Majority of companies are open to ETC students. Software and Analytics companies are always open for ETC.
