Course Curriculum

10

  • The course differs from what we study in India , here it is more distributed into the whole semester rather than on few exams . Here you will have to work throughout the semester and the weightage of final exams are very less.assignments have equal importance as of exams and there is almost a mandatory project in each subject which has a 30-40% of marks of your whole subject.
  • Only negative points can be that the way of answers they expect in the exam may differ a bit from our experience in India , here a strict structure is followed in my opinion .
  • Students have 6 classes of 1.25 hours each week .2 classes typically per day . for 3-4 days
  • There are approx 100-120 students in each class. In my courses of CSE there are approx 100-120 students out of which most are Asians and majorly Indians .

Admission Experience

  • I applied in 5 universities :
  1. Stony Brook : Rejected
  2. NJIT : Admitted
  3. Northeastern :Admitted(not CSE but Data science that's why i choose ASU)
  4. ASU :Admitted
  5. Illinois Institute of Technology : Admitted
  • I recieved rejection in Stony brook only .Maybe because i applied for thesis based and my research profile is not that strong .I think someone with better research profile like having 2-3 paper published at least will stand a chance in getting admitted.
My reasons to select this university includes :
1.It has a very low cost of living compared to other places.
    2. It is near California so it is easier to travel .
    3. very big alumni network of Indians.
4.Flexible course work and big campus .

  • My admission process:
I started my application in start of November as it increases your chances of being admitted if you apply early. Before that i gave exams like Gre, Toefl in September . I submitted the following documents in my application : GRE,Toefl , Transcript ,3 letter of Recommendations , Statement of purpose . After applying I received my admit letter in end of December.

  • Eligible criteria :
GRE : 310+(official is less but i have noticed to get case you should get this much at least)
Toefl (80+) or ielts (any one is fine)

  • Overall experience was fine , I faced no such big issues . i would suggest keep an eye on the portal of ASU ,if they require any thing extra you will receive an email or an update on the portal . Try to look for Coupons to waive off the application fee which are available in early application time like before mid November .
  • I applied for the fall intake of 2024 .
  • After working for 2 years in the industry I decided to do a masters , and on researching i got to know that applications start in October in most of the colleges . I started preparing for the Gre and Toefl in June and I gave my both exams in September which i cleared with 320+ in GRE and 100 in Toefl .then I started my SOP in october and it took around 2-3 weeks to complete it , then i completed my application in Nov and it took 2-3 days to do the whole process . after my application my professors who sent my LORs received mails to submit my LORs. after all that i recieved an acceptance letter in late December.

Faculty

8

  • There are plenty of faculty and then there are TAs in each class so there is good faculty student ratio . The faulty hosts doubt classes each week .
  • The content and approach are good enough to gain new skills and with an extra added effort of practice will make you more job ready.
  • There are ASU portals to find on campus jobs and off campus jobs , they have partnered with multiple platforms to provide better facilities .
  • I think there are many faculties that one can admire and i mostly like the faculties of Fulton school as it is for CSE , to name a few I would say ,Vivek gupta, hua wei etc.

Campus Life

10

  • ASU has 4 campuses and the Tempe campus is the main one where most of the students have their classes .Other ones are in Phoenix and one is in west valley.
  • There are 3-4 libraries , fitness center of 4 floor including many activities and 2-3 stadiums in the tempe campus.Almost all the indian festivals are hosted by clubs like ISSC and ISO .
  • Football matches are hosted each year including the ice hockey matches also .There are weekly events hosted by various clubs that one can join .

Part Time Jobs

  • There are very less TA,RA positions in the school of computer science due to the large number of students.
  • For these positions one can get 16-18 dollars per hour . and one can work for 20 hours max per week . and 40 hours max in the sem breaks.
  • It is a bit hard to get on campus jobs and other jobs are also available like front desk assistant , event assistant , data aide etc.
  • If someone try hard then they can secure an on campus job in 1-2 semesters.
  • Student earn approx 15-18 dollar per hour and mostly try to get a job on the campus . it is a bit difficult to get an on campus job at ASU. usually students apply through an aasu portal for on campus opportunities. firstly you have to submit your resume and Cover letter during the application and if selected there are normally 2 interviews and after selection you have to get your approval from the international student busy to work . then you are good to start.

Placement

8

  • Most of the students get the job after completing the degree . approx 95+% student secure job after graduating with the CSE degree.average salary can range from 80k - 150k dollars depending on your location like in Arizona you will have 80k-110k but in california you will get 95k-150k . most stays in the range of 80-120k . students find obs via linkedin or by applying directly to the company portal .
  • One can try for internships in the summer semester which is the common way . There are career fairs hosted each month , so one. can attend and talk to different companies there to explore the opportunities .My batch mates have been selected to ibm, honeywell ,synopsys, amazon and Nvidia.
  • These are the general companies which hire from asu.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • I used platforms like Telegram to find groups on whatsapp etc. later from these groups i got to know many of other students from where i got the apartment details.
  • I pay around 560 dollars per month and facilities like pool , gym and common area are here . and it is nearby to the campus and there is parking for you vehicle.
  • I would say finding groups on telegram and discord will be the most helpful . students coming to asu can look for apartments like Paseo , Hyve and Nexa as they are nearby the campus.
  • Most of the Indians stay what I mentioned above.

Exams

  • Exams required : ILETS/ TOEFL (any one) , GRE(for master in CSE )
  • Documents required : Transcript of Bachelors , Semester wise marksheet, SOP , 3 LORs, GRE , Toefl or Ilets and your latest resume .
  • No interview was taken for any of the universities i applied.
  • I will say that SOP and your GRE marks matter the most for the application fo masters in computer science.

Fees

  • Fee breakdown : 17k+17k+17k+7k dollars approx for my 4 semester degree (2 years).
  • I live off campus so no hostel fee .
  • You have to submit fee each semester.it is based on credits you take each semester.
  • If you decide to live off campus then 600 dollars is the approx rent per month and another 200 for you grocery etc.most of the apartments are nearby so there is no transport cost.there are some free buses that go across campuses and nearby areas.

Scholarship

  • I did not qualify for the scholarship .some of my friends has received scholarship . it is approx 5-10k dollars , it is mostly based on your bachelors gpa. people with a cgpa of 9.1+ out of 10 have higher chances of receiving the scholarship.
  • I think roughly 7-10 % of students receive any form of scholarship .
  • One can easily fine on the portal of ASU for the existing scholarships . If someone qualify to apply then they can apply from the portal .
