Dr. V.R. Sivakumar is working as the Head of the Mechanical Department at RVS College of Engineering and Technology. He has completed his PhD and ME in Thermal Engineering and has a total of 19 years of teaching experience and research. His research interests include areas like Heat exchangers, Atomizers and Aerofoils.

What do you see as your college’s greatest strength? 

Our faculty and infrastructure are our greatest strengths. Students enjoy well-framed academic infrastructure, with good quality and experienced faculty members as well as professional-level sports encouragements. The college emphasizes the research, development and support of interdisciplinary research activities and innovative initiatives through the Centre for Research and Institute Innovation Cell. 


When you came to college, what was your vision and how are you trying to achieve the same?

My vision upon assuming this position was to create a thriving academic environment that fosters innovation, excellence, and holistic development of our students. Additionally, I have focused on strengthening industry-academia collaborations. By forging partnerships with leading companies and organizations, we provide our students with opportunities for internships, industrial visits, and hands-on projects. To encourage innovation and research, I have established research centres and promoted interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty members and students.


What are your roles and responsibilities to the university and the students?

My role is to lead, manage and develop the department to ensure that it achieves the highest possible standards of excellence in all its activities. It is also my duty to supervise and delegate the work of all faculty members and staff within the department. Providing mentoring to faculty to offer support and guidance towards excellence in teaching, service and scholarly activities is also my responsibility.

How does the curriculum of your college ensure the best practice of industry?

We provide a vast curriculum that enriches every student who studies here, ensuring the best Industrial practice. The college follows a choice based credit system by developing course plans with objectives and outcomes. The learning styles of the students are evaluated through learning style tests. Though the college is affiliated with Anna University curriculum gaps are plugged through design-based experiments, and additional labs other than the curriculum and evaluated systematically through different assessment tools. This practice enables the students to excel and succeed in any area of research or industry through the latest state-of- art graduate education.


Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

I would like to suggest the current youth to lead, manage and develop the department to ensure it achieves the highest possible standards of excellence in all its activities. Supervise and delegate the work of all faculty and staff within the department. Provide mentoring to faculty to offer support and guidance towards excellence in teaching, service and scholarly activities. Facilitate the pursuit of professional development and research activities for faculty.


What is the latest program that you are offering in your department which will help students outperform and stand apart from the crowd?

We have introduced a design software program in the department for students to get design-oriented knowledge. The software name is CATIA. Catia is a professional software tool developed by Dassault Systems. Mostly used for aerospace projects, this program is particularly useful for complex and detailed designs. With this program, you can actually work on any product.so it helps the students to outperform in placements and projects.


What are the benefits and career options after pursuing this course?

Mechanical engineers have the opportunity to work in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, energy, manufacturing, and robotics. This breadth of industries allows for a diverse range of career options. Additionally, mechanical engineering offers the potential for career growth and advancement. With experience and expertise, professionals can take on leadership roles, manage teams, and oversee large-scale projects. There are also opportunities to pursue advanced degrees, such as a Master’s or Ph.D, which can lead to research and development positions, academia, or specialized roles in highly technical fields.

What are all the program specific objectives of your college?

Some of the program specific objectives of RVS College include applying modern problem solving tools in two, three dimensional drafting and analysis viz. CREO, Autodesk Inventor and Analysis Automation Studio for product design and Development, Analyzing real time complex mechanical engineering problems in the area of Thermal, Design and Manufacturing Engineering and Practicing moral and ethical values in engineering career to adapt techno-environmental changes.


How did you train yourself/ faculty to deliver this program to the students?

I always attend webinars and seminars and also encourage our faculty to attend it. I strive to provide accurate and up-to-date information, there may be limitations and potential inaccuracies due to the static nature of my training data. Therefore, it’s always recommended to consult domain experts and trusted academic resources for comprehensive and reliable information in the field of mechanical engineering.
