D Y Patil International University (DYPIU) in Pune to conduct research in Nuclear Fusion Technology
Date: April 19, 2022
DY Patil International University(DYPIU), Akurdi, Pune is going to conduct research in the field of Nuclear Fusion Technology in collaboration with Albot Technologies Private Limited under the project titled 'Project Sanlayan'.
This information was given by Prof. Prabhat Ranjan, Vice-Chancellor of DYPIU at a Press conference along with Dr Akash Singh, founder of Albot Technologies Private Limited and a Silicon Valley, USA-based investor on Wednesday, April 6, 2022.
Ranjan, who is also the Chief Mentor of the project said that the objective of this research initiative is to deliver a compact volume neutron source capable of producing medical isotopes along with nuclear fuel breeding by converting thorium to uranium. It would also be possible to do nuclear waste management.
The 'Project Sanlayan' was announced on 3 December 2020 during the 8th Bihar Science Conference. The project aims to generate baseload electricity in a clear and sustainable way. Forthcoming to the production of energy, they also aspire to utilize neutrons constructed by way of nuclear fusion for sundry crucial applications to enable commercialization. In addition to this, the focus of the project is on the development of a spherical tokamak-based compact volume neutron source with the purpose of generating extremely short-supplied medical isotopes.
The founder of Albot Technologies confirmed that the funding of 1 million US Dollar has been provided to the project during its initial phase. And this amount can increase up to 200 to 300 million US Dollar because this is a long-term project and can take approx 15 years to achieve the desired goals. Therefore, Indian and international investors (who can give funds for high-risk high ROI kinds of projects with long-term objectives) will be approached in the upcoming time. At last, Ranjan updated that to reduce complexity, cost and to make the system more flexible to upgrade the duty cycle of operations, they are exploring the likelihood of using a non-superconducting magnet system.
