JEE main is conducted twice a year for admission in various courses of B.E/B.Tech/B.Arch/B.Planning in NITs, CFTIs, IITs etc. The exam has two phases i.e. JEE Main and JEE Advance. The second phase is conducted mainly for admissions into IITs in India. The syllabus of JEE Main 2021 is basically covered by the course structure of class 11 and 12. JEE Main Exam Pattern observed major changes by NTA which includes a separate paper for B. Planning and introduction of numerical value answer based questions.
Latest Update: CBSE step of 30% syllabus reduction for class XI and XII has further intensified the possibility of reduction in JEE Main 2021 syllabus. Read More
B.E/ B.Tech Question Paper will have a total of 75 questions of 300 marks, with 25 questions per subject - Physics, Chemistry, and Maths. Numerical Value-based questions have been added to the paper pattern of all the 3 papers. B. Arch Paper will have a total of 77 questions for 400 marks. The question paper of B. Planning shall include 100 questions for 400 marks. The rescheduling of exam dates for JEE Main 2020 April session, has resulted in various speculations regarding reduction in JEE Main 2021 syllabus, however NTA hasn’t given an official update on this yet.
JEE Main 2021 – Mode of Examination
The mode of exam for JEE Main 2021 will be online for all the papers except the drawing test for B.Arch. The bifurcations are as follows:
- Paper 1 examination i.e. for B.E/B.Tech courses the test will be conducted online as ‘computer based test(CBT)
- Paper 2 will be further divided into 3 parts; part 1(Mathematics) and part 2(Aptitude Test) will be conducted through CBT mode and part 3 will be conducted in offline mode
- Paper 3 examination will be conducted through CBT mode in three parts; Part 1 will be Mathematics, Part 2 will be Aptitude Test and Part 3 will be Planning based questions.

JEE Main 2021 Exam Instructions
- You should sign twice on the attendance sheet at the appropriate place - firstly on the commencement of the examination and secondly at the time of handing over the answer sheet to the invigilator. You will also be required to put your left-hand thumb impression on the attendance sheet.
- Candidates should take their seat immediately after the opening of the examination hall. They can log-in and read instruction, before the commencement of the exam.
- Stationary for rough work shall be provided in the exam hall. Candidates have to write their name and roll number on the top of the rough sheet and this sheet must be returned to the invigilator before leaving the exam hall.
- Candidates appearing for Aptitude Test Paper-II must bring their own geometry box set, pencils, erasers and colour pencils or crayons.
- Candidates must be careful that they will not be allowed to use watercolor on the Drawing sheet.
- The test will be of 3 hours duration.
- Paper I will have 3 parts, carrying equal weightage - Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and all questions would carry equal marks.
- Each question will be allotted four marks for the correct response. One-fourth marks, i.e. one mark shall be deducted for each incorrect response. However, there will be no deduction for unattempted questions and numerical value-based questions.
Note : No Candidate should adopt any unfair means or indulge in any unfair examination practices as the examination centres are under surveillance of CCTV and equipped with Jammers
Guidelines for Scribes for JEE Main
- The candidates with disability should fill in the type and percentages of disability correctly in the online JEE Main Application Form. Any incorrect information can affect their candidature.
- Only the candidates, who have 40% or more disability, will be provided Scribe/Reader on the request of the candidate.
- The candidates will have choice of opting their own scribe/reader or may submit the request to the center superintendent.
- After the request of the candidate, the centre superintendent will identify the scribe/reader students for the candidate. This is only task of centre superintendent to choose a scribe for the candidate.
- However, if a candidate requests to meet the scribe before exam, they would be allowed to meet the scribe only a day before the examination to verify whether the scribe is suitable or not.
- One other provision is that 1 hour (60 minutes) compensatory time will be allowed to the candidates with 40% or more disability irrespective of the fact they are availing the facility of a scribe/reader.
Difference in JEE Main and JEE Advanced Syllabus
A majority of topics in both the exams are common but as you will go through the syllabus of JEE Main and JEE Advanced, you will find that topics related to practical in Physics and Chemistry are included in the JEE Advanced Syllabus. There are many topics that are included in JEE Main but not in JEE Advanced and vice-versa.
JEE Main Syllabus
- Syllabus of JEE Main comprises the syllabus of CBSE class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics subjects.
- Topics like Electronic Devices, Electromagnetic Waves and Communication Systems are included in JEE main but are not asked in JEE Advanced.
- Similarly, some of the topics of Mathematics like Sets, Relations and Functions, Statistics and Probability, Trigonometry and Mathematical Reasoning are included in JEE Main but not in JEE Advanced.
- When it comes to chemistry, topics like biomolecules and chemistry in everyday life are included in JEE Main but not in JEE Advanced syllabus.
- The exam conducting authority, NTA has laid down the complete Syllabus of JEE Main.
JEE Advanced Syllabus
- Unlike JEE main, it includes few extra topics apart from class 12th syllabus.
- JEE main does not include some of the topics of JEE Advanced like Thermal Physics is included in JEE Advanced but is not asked in JEE main.
- Similarly, Electrochemistry is included in JEE Advanced but not in JEE main.
- Mostly questions in JEE Advanced are derivation based. Whereas, Questions in JEE Main are application based.
