CFTRI Courses and Fees FAQs
Ques. How does CFTRI's M.Sc (Food Technology) differ from a conventional university M.Sc in Food Science if CFTRI is a research institute?
Ans. The M.Sc at CFTRI is a research-focused degree that gets students involved in active food technology projects being conducted in the CSIR's industrial food technology group. Students are exposed to pilot-scale food processing and analytical labs with food industry scientists as opposed to simply studying theory as is the case for most university M.Sc programs. The curriculum is frequently modified based on hot topics in food industry research.
Ques. Why are CFTRI's fees lower than private food technology colleges even though it has a good infrastructure?
Ans. CFTRI is a research institute under CSIR, a government agency, and receives grant funding from the Government of India. Therefore, students are charged lower fees as the institution is subsidised by the Government of India. The main goal when establishing research institutes is not for an income or profit centre, our goal is research and development at the national level. As a result, students have access to leading lab experiences, at a relatively low academic cost to private or deemed fee-charging universities.
Ques. Are internships or industrial exposures necessary for the CFTRI M.Sc, and will they come with stipends?
Ans. Yes, practical exposure is part of CFTRI's curriculum. Internships in industries and projects in-house are conducted under the supervision of an experienced scientist. On the whole, internships are non-stipendiary. This is because we want students to engage in research skill-building opportunities and gain experience with specialized instruments. Although there is no compensation for the experience, the networking and publishing opportunities often allow students to gain placements in successful and leading food industries later.
