Question 1: find the amount that Mr. A should pay back Mr. B if he had lent Rs. 10,000 for 2.5 years at a 12% interest rate.

  1. 2,500
  2. 3,400
  3. 13,000
  4. 3,000

Ans: 3) 13,000

Explanation: here, the amount Mr. A borrowed was Rs.10, 000. The formula for calculating simple interest is,

Simple interest = (Amount borrowed x rate x period) /100

Here, the amount borrowed = RS.10,000

Rate of interest = 12%

Time Period = 2.5 years

Applying the above data to simple interest formula,

Simple interest = (10,000 x 12 x 2.5) / 100

= 3, 00,000/ 100

= 3,000

Again, to find the total amount payable, we should add simple interest to the amount borrowed,

Amount to be repaid = 10,000 + 3,000

= 13,000

Question 2: convert the fraction into a ratio: 30/25

  1. 5: 2
  2. 6:5
  3. 4:6
  4. 5:6

Ans: 2) 6:5

Explanation: the given fraction is 30/25.

To convert a fraction into a ratio, we should simplify the numerator and denominator to the standard form (i.e., the numerator and denominator should be divided by the common multiple until there is no common multiple remaining between them)

In the above case, Numerator = 30

Denominator = 25

Excluding 1, try all other natural numbers whether both 30 and 25 can divide them simultaneously. 2,3and 4 can easily divide 30, but can’t divide 25. But 5 can divide both 30 and 25. So the ratio will be,

(30/5: 25/ 5)

6: 5

Question 3: In a town, 25% of people like coffee, 20% of people like tea, and the rest of the people like juice. If there are 300 people in the town, then how many people like Juice?

  1. 255
  2. 300
  3. 165
  4. 105

Ans: 3) 165

Explanation: given, the number of people in the town = 300 people.

Also, 25% of people like coffee, 20% like tea, and the rest like juice.

Remember that the total population would be always 100%. i.e., in this case, 100% means 300 people.

It is said that, out of the total population, if we take away the people who like tea & coffee, only people who like juice will remain.

i.e., percentage of people who like juice = 100% - 25%- 20%

= 55%

In absolute terms, the number of people who like juice = 55% of 300 people

= 300 x 55/ 100

= 165

Question 4: Rahul bought a sack of rice from a store for Rs. 250. If the amount has Rs. 20 profit of the storekeeper and 12% tax, what is the amount tax included?

  1. 24.6
  2. 12.5
  3. 27.6
  4. 22.2

Ans: 3) 27.6

Explanation: given, the price of one sack rice = Rs.250

Also, the amount includes Rs.20 profit of shopkeeper. So, the amount on which the tax was calculated will not contain the shopkeeper’s profit.

Therefore, the price of one sack rice (for calculation of tax) = 250-20

= 230.

So, tax over one sack of rice = 230 x 12%

= 230 x 12 /100

= 27.6

Question 5: Soap was sold for Rs. 20 and if they buy 4 soups, the seller offered that we can buy it for Rs. 70. Then what would be the price of soap when we buy at the offer rate?

  1. 12.5
  2. 13.5
  3. 16.5
  4. 17.5

Ans: 4) 17.5

Explanation: given, the price of one soap is Rs.20.

Therefore, at a normal price, the cost of 4 soaps = 20 x 4

= Rs.80

But when 4 soaps are bought together, we can buy them for Rs. 70.

Therefore, price of one soap = 70 / 4

= 17.5

Question 6: what would be 25%, when we represent it as a fraction?

  1. 1/2
  2. 1/4
  3. 1/5
  4. 1/6

Ans: 2) 1/4

Explanation: 25% means 25 out of a hundred. (Note that, ‘percentage’ is derived from the Greek word ‘cent’ which means 100)

When we convert 25% into a percentage, it becomes 25 / 100.

We know the 100 is 4 times 25 (25 x 4 = 100)

So, on simplifying the fraction we get 25 / 100

= 1 /4

Question 7: what is the ratio of 25 kg to 200 g?

  1. 120: 123
  2. 125: 1
  3. 100: 110
  4. 115: 123

Ans: 2) 125: 1

Explanation: the ratio we have to find is,

25kg: 200 g

Here, the lowest unit is g or gram (because 1 kg = 1000 g)

So, we can convert 25 kg in terms of grams, to simplify the ratio. (Note that to simplify, both the quantities should be in the same units.)

25 kg = 1000 x 25

= 25,000 g

So, the ratio will become

25,000 g: 200 g

On simplifying, the ratio will become (divide both the sides with 200)

125g: 1 g

OR

125: 1

Question 8: a luxury car travelled 120 km per hour, whereas, an ordinary car will travel 25 km per hour. What is the ratio of the speed of the luxury car to that of an ordinary car?

  1. 24: 5
  2. 25: 4
  3. 25: 3
  4. 23: 5

Ans: 1) 24: 5

Explanation: given quantities are 120 km per hour and 25 km per hour.

Since both the quantities are in the same unit, we need to just simplify the numbers to get the ratio

i.e., 120 km/h: 25 km/h

→ 120: 25 (divide both sides by 5)

→ 24: 5

Question 9: Nancy said to her mom that she ate 24% of the apple that was there on the basket and she gave half of the remaining to her younger one Andy. Then what percentage of apple remains in the basket?

  1. 48%
  2. 38%
  3. 25%
  4. 18%

Ans: 2) 38 %

Explanation: given that 24% of the Apple was eaten by Nancy. Remember, there was 100% apple in the basket.

So, the percentage of apples that remained in the basket

= 100 % - 24% (reducing what Nancy ate)

= 76%

Also given that half of the remaining (76%) was given to Andy.

Therefore, the percentage of apples given to Andy

= 76% / 2

= 38%

So, out of the total 100% apple, 24% was eaten by Nancy and 38% was eaten by Andy.

So, the percentage of remaining apple = 100- 24-38

= 38%

Question 10: what is the percentage of discount, if the product that cost Rs.35,000 is sold for Rs.33,250?

  1. 2%
  2. 3%
  3. 4%
  4. 5%

Ans: 4) 5 %

Explanation: given, original price = Rs.35,000

Discounted price = Rs. 33,250

Therefore, discount = 35,000 – 33,250

= 1,750

To know the percentage of discount, we should know what the percentage of 1,750 on 35,000 is.

i.e., 1750 x 100 / 35,000 =1,75,000 / 35,000

= 5%

Question 11: ABC ltd. Sell Televisions for a certain amount. If the total cost of making the television was 24,550 and he earns 24% profit over the cost, what is the price of the television the ABC ltd. Sells?

  1. 30,442
  2. 30,440
  3. 30,441
  4. 30,443

Ans: 1) 30,442

Explanation: given, the cost price of the television is Rs. 24,550.

Also, the percentage of profit is 24 %

Selling price = cost + percentage of profit

To apply in this formula, we should find profit in absolute terms.

I.e., 24,550 x 24/100 = 5,892

Therefore, selling price = 24,550 + 5,892

= 30,442

Question 12: Shahin donated Rs. 2,300 to a charity fund and his dad donated Rs.4,600. What is the ratio of the amount donated by Shahin to the Amount donated by his dad?

  1. 1: 2
  2. 2: 1
  3. 3:1
  4. 1:3

Ans: 1) 1: 2

Explanation: given, the amount donated by Shahin is Rs.2, 300 and the amount donated by his dad is Rs. 4,600.

Since both the amounts are in rupees (same unit) we can simplify the amounts to get the ratio.

i.e., 2,300: 4,600 (divide both sides by 2,300)

→ 1: 2

Question 13: convert the fraction ¾ to percentage.

  1. 50%
  2. 70%
  3. 75%
  4. 55%

Ans: 3) 75%

Explanation: the fraction is ¾.

Since the numerator and denominator don’t have any multiple in common, we can directly multiply 100 with the fraction to get a percentage.

 ¾ x 100 = (3 x 100) / 4

= 300 / 4

= 75%

Question 14: we need 25% marks to pass an exam. What would be the pass mark if the exam was conducted for 120 marks?

  1. 50
  2. 40
  3. 30
  4. 20

Ans: 3) 30

Explanation: given, pas mark of the exam is 25% of 120

i.e., 120 x 25 / 100 = (120 x 25) / 100

= 3,000 / 100

= 30 marks

Question 15: Spiderman took 0.45 mins to reach School from the bus stop whereas superman took 45 seconds. What is the ratio of Spiderman’s speed and Superman’s speed?

  1. 2:5
  2. 3:5
  3. 4: 5
  4. 5:6

Ans: 2) 3:5

Explanation:  given, time taken by Spiderman = 0.45 mins

Time taken by Superman = 45 seconds.

Since the given speeds are in a different unit, we have to convert them into the same unit, before calculating the ratio.

I minute = 60 seconds

Therefore, 0.45 minutes = 60 x 0.45 seconds

= 27 seconds

So, the ratio between Spiderman’s speed and Superman’s speed will become,

27 seconds: 45 seconds

→ 27: 45(divide both sides by 9)

→3: 5
