New Delhi: On International Women’s Day, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has introduced a new scholarship program for female students pursuing BBA, BCA, and BMS courses. This endeavour reflects AICTE's dedication to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within India's technical and management education sectors.
As part of this initiative, AICTE will annually award scholarships to 3,000 economically underprivileged female students enrolled in AICTE-approved institutions. Each recipient will be granted an annual scholarship of INR 25,000. AICTE has pledged to allocate INR 7.5 crore annually over three years to support these scholarships, exclusively available to female students pursuing BBA, BCA, and BMS courses at AICTE-approved colleges.
In announcing this scheme, the Chairman of AICTE emphasised the notable increase in women's enrollment in AICTE-approved Institutions in recent years. In the academic year 2022-23, 39% of women enrolled in AICTE-approved courses, compared to 36% in 2021-22 and 30% in 2020-21.
AICTE Initiatives for Female Students
The following are the various initiatives launched by AICTE for female students:
- AICTE's Pragati Scholarship Scheme
- AICTE joined hands with Amazon India and Amazon WoW (Women of the World) to empower and equip women students enrolled in engineering colleges across India with essential skills to thrive in the technology industry
- AICTE’s TechSaksham Program (TSP) 19,000+ students have been trained since 2021, of which 14,000 are female
- To promote entrepreneurship among women, AICTE has launched the Women Entrepreneurship in Waste Management program (WEWP)
Additionally, the Chairman highlighted the growing percentages of women enrolled in engineering diploma and undergraduate programs, showcasing the evolving recognition of women's capabilities and the imperative for diversity in the engineering and management workforce.
AICTE Chairman Prof. T.G. Sitharam highlighted the scheme in the esteemed presence of Ms. Rohini Bhajibhakare, IAS, Private Secretary to the Minister of State for Education. Ms. Bhajibhakare honoured the International Women’s Day celebration at AICTE as the distinguished chief guest for the occasion.
