Gajanand Verma's Review On IIT Roorkee - Indian Institute Of Technology - [IITR], Roorkee

Till now I don't have any bad experience with me on campus, everything is good here. I am very satisfied with my decision of choosing this college. Life is full of joy here.

I cleared IIT JEE 2013 in search of a good college. My score was 82 although it is less I am from a reserved category (SC) so it was sufficient. I was eligible to get admission into Integrated M.Sc. Physics program here, till my first semester I studied M.Sc. Physics. But in the first semester, my grade point was 7.76 so I was eligible for branch change. I changed my branch from M.Sc. to B.tech. Chemical. I opted for this course because the Chemical department of IIT Roorkee has been ranked 1 in India.

The course mainly focuses on theory. Although there are some courses which include lab work (Fluid Dynamics, Heat transfer, Mass transfer, etc.) that is not sufficient. Teachers are very supportive. One semester is of 4 months. There are approximately 4 departmental courses and 2 institute electives in one semester (means total 5 or 6 courses in one semester) . B.Tech. courses are noted for research purposes here the course mainly focuses on industrial work.

College does not provide any internship. But it depends on the faculty whether he requires someone or not. One can mail the faculty personally to do a project under his or her guidance. The stipend will be decided by the faculty only.

The placement scenario here is very good. Almost 70-80 % placement every year. Google, Yahoo, Adobe, Shell, ITC, IOCL, Schlumberger, Wipro, CIL, and many more companies come here for recruitment. Companies are divided into 3 categories A,B,C. Grade companies pay more than 8 lacs, B grade pay between 4 to 8 lacs, and C grade pays less than 4 lacs. More than 100 companies visit the campus for recruitment every year.

There are 3 main festivals-1. Thomso - A 3 days cultural fest of IIT Roorkee. Drama, Musical events, Comedy shows, guest lectures, etc. 2.Cognizance- A 3 days technical fest of IIT Roorkee. 2nd largest techfest of India. Car racing, Robot fighting, new ideas, and much more.3.Sankalp- A 2 days social fest organized by the NSS team of IIT Roorkee.

The fee structure is feasible it's a deemed college but the fee is less than a good private college. In present 2015 one semester fee is around Rs/- 60,000. An SC or ST candidate has to pay only Rs/- 25,000 per semester. It is not much as compared to local colleges.

College provides MCM (merit cum means ) scholarship to General and OBC category people, in which tution fee (more than Rs/- 50000) is returned to the student. For SC and ST category people Rs/- 15000 is provided by the institute as a scholarship. Criteria for any scholarship is - parental income should be less than 4.5 lac per annum and grade must be above 6.5. Loans are easily available here by PNB and SBI. Currently, I am availing student loan from SBI.

It's a beautiful campus on around 489 acres. The sex ratio is okay. In my branch, there is a total of 110 students out of which 28 girls. There are canteens in each hostel. Different hobbies clubs are also there one can explore his hobby with the group like dance group, music group, photography, robotics, debate, spirituality, etc. NSS, NCC, and sports are there. Cricket, hockey, football, tennis and many playgrounds are there. Each hostel has a gym with the latest equipment. There is a central gym also.

Hostels are very good. In the first year, you have to share the room with one partner but from the second year onwards you will be provided a single room. Almost 10 rooms share a single bathroom. No. of hostels are enough to provide a room to every admitted student.

Seniors are very good. IITR is a zero ragging campus. My experience with seniors is excellent. They provide us previous year's papers and guide us for future internships and placements.

Exams are not very frequent. Since the semester is of 4 months, there will be 2 exams at almost 2 months intervals. The first one called mid-term and the second one called end-term. The course structure is designed in such a way that exams can be passed very smoothly.

In almost every college teachers are exceptionally good, some are good and some teachers are even not interested in teaching. It is true for IIT Roorkee also. All the teachers are unique in their subjects but the problem comes when a teacher teaches a subject.
