Remarks
Best and the worst part in college is politics. The college, which supposedly, is to provide good education, is what college lacks at. Curriculum and teaching could have been better. But this lack in academics is masked by the great opportunities one get as the student, to work in societies, interns, with local organisations et cetera.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is fine. Could be much better, as right now it is outdated. The practicals are of the methods and techniques which are no longer in use. They'll teach you, and then later they'll say, okay this method is no longer in use. Now this doesn't mean it is worse, as there isn't any better option than this, in India. Being one of the best college, there are options and opportunities you'll not get anywhere else. The exams seems too frequent, being semester system, but is fine, as the exams are not that tough enough that you'll not be able to ace that. So, chill. The lab work is fine. The teachers could be better, as they avoid taking elaborate laboratory classes, but if you're interested enough, they'll not refuse either. So depends on your interests, in a particular topic or course. The worst part in the whole course, in sciences is making the practical files, which is the most useless, time consuming, old, evil practice where you'll have to make practical files, which ultimately are torn off by lab staff, in front of you, on the day of exam. Like, firstly making the files is unnecessary. Now if you're making it, you should be allowed to keep them after evaluation, for help in further times. It's like you're providing fuel to colleges, to have good bonfires in winter. The exams are easier than expected. The results are always unexpected. But again, this is the best option among government colleges in India.
Placement Experience
There are placements and jobs for particular courses. Some are really good, and few of my batchmates were placed in some amazing pojsitions in some companies. But that is restricted to commerce, economics and few arts courses. Its rare to find relevant job after any science course. Internships are there, but not thourough college but independent applications thourough the applicant. The teachers in our department were not that supportive to write the references for the internships. But some are really good, in other departments. But being in a position of student in such a reputed college gives you the edge of little chance of getting refusal for any internship you apply.
College Events
This is the best part of college. There are events happening, almost every day. And another good thing is, all are student arranged. Starting from the small lecture of a guest, and a small gathering to the gathering of hundred thousands people in cultural festivals, is all managed by students voluntarily, arranging the funds themselves thourough sponsors.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Fee is much feasible compared to private colleges. Some independent scholarship options are also available but not enough. The fee structure, averagely, during my time as student was INR 14000 annually for tuition, and 50000 INR annually for hostel, including mess charges.
Fees and Financial Aid
Very few scholarships thourough college, and no loan facility i know of. I did get a merit scholarship thourough university, specifically to buy books. Not significant enough to support the fees. There are few scholarships given to the topper of each course, and some given by the government's of respective States depending on the caste category. For me, being a general category, from Punjab, there was no such option. For few students from North Eastern states of India, they were receiving scholarships from their respective Government (which i know little of). And few of my mates from uttar pradesh were receiving it from their state Government.
Campus Life
Politics is a major thing in our college, good for people who are interested. Also hated by few. But it was without doubt, the thing which makes the college life most happening. Our college had the parliament system, which the elections for the prime minister, who'll choose the ministers and their secretaries after being elected. Every student is the member of parliament. The annual festival, and festival of each department and each society (there were 19 departments and 36 societies then) make the semesters quite happening. The students are quite open minded, and little instances of racism. There were gender issues, and sexism, which often incited the protests, and agitations. But, the solidarity among students made such unfortunate events bearable. The administration was terrible, but compared to other Indian government institutions, wasn't that bad either.
Hostel Facilities
Sharing hostels in undergraduate courses, and single rooms in postgraduate. Strictly on merit basis. About 10% students get hostel facility, based on their marks in 12th. As most of the students studying are not native, they'll have to look for PG's and private rooms, which are easily available in the nearby regions. But finding good, and economical accomodation is a big challenge. The average rent starts from about 6000 INR per month, the rooms of which would be quite dingy. But there are good options in about. 10000 per month ranges. For girls, the rates are unfortunately quite high, compared to that for boys.
Alumni/Alumna
Few seniors are quite helpful, letting you know the amazing things to do in college, some end us being the beat friends. Hostel life is something uncomparable, and getting a hostel is best for college. But those living outside in rents have some benefits of making their social contacts with people from other colleges too, which hostellers usually do not. Alumni network is quite good, a strong alumni association, and an alumni meet is organised often.
Admission
It is thourough the cutoff list released by the college thourough university of Delhi, on the basis of 12th marks. Anyone above that cutoff marks is eligible for admission, for that particular subject. I did study botany, mainly because of my interest to study. Of all the colleges in Delhi university, Hindu college generally have highest cutoff marks, and is supposedly the best college, and being eligible for admission in botany, i decided to join it. The process for admission isn't that elaborate, takes just few hours, including fee submission, and filling up forms, and a formal meeting with the principal. Few certificates as the marksheet for 12th, 10th, migration certificate, and character certificate are the usual required documents (the details are listed on the website)
Faculty
Faculty is qualified, but not good enough. Most of the teachers we had were not able to teach the subject alloted to them. We had to study ourselves. Only few were good. But they were amazing. But there are shortcomings from administration, and infrastructure which limits teachers too. Also from students. Majority of the students lack interest in the course they've joined, so teachers also loses interest. But this idea is detrimental for the students who are genuinely interested. So, in brief, the faculty is fine. But could be much better.
