First year undergraduate at NIT Silchar

My experience till now has been good. The college management is strict but the decision they take is always in good will of our future. I am enjoying the course. But, the college location being remote in comparision to other NITs and the city life being dull sometimes brings hurdles to our reputation and public perception.

The course is not very relevent in first year as basic sciences are taught instead of specialized subjects. But from second year of study, the course us more relevent and to an extent is in line to the required industry standards, which is why the placements statistics are quite good. As of now, in the first year, the only things we learnt through the curriculum are time management and basic coding skills.

The placement for the course is really good with figures rising vastly with every passing year. We have hosted companies like Amazon, Quikr, Arcesium, Goibibo, SAP Labs, Samsung, Goldman Sachs and Amdocs. About 100% students with CGPA above 6 get placed. The recruitment procedure has a coding round followed by technical and hr rounds. Yes, the Training and Placement Cell of the institute played a great role in achieving such feats.

Each year we host the techno management fest Tecnoesis and cultural fest Incandescence which are among the biggest fests in North East with a footfall of 5000+ with the number outgrowing each year. Mass participation is usual. Other than these, we have small scale events going on every now and then such as literary week, sports week and inter hostel competitions.

The program fee is 70000 approx per semester. The payment mode accepted is online through SBI Collect usinv net banking or debit cards. No additional fee is required and the breakdown is also transparent and as revised by the MhrD. All in all, it is feasible to a certain extent.

No scholarship or education loan availed. But the college has provision of loan through SBI inside the campus and approval of Director sir after submitting the required documents. Scholarship schemes are same as under MhrD.

The campus is of 625 acres and is lush and green. It gives us time to relax in the evening. Gender ratio is 1 girl in 10 boys as the best case. There are many extra curriculur events that take place. Sports culture is good with big cricket and football fields, lawn tennis court and Student Activity Centre for indoor sports. Other facilites include gym, wooden court, sports and yoga complex. We have Asia's second largest digital library. There are clubs in diverse fields such as literary, drama, dance, music and photography. Technical clubs like coding, robotics and machine learning club. Students come from all parts of India but there is 50% reservation for home state Assam. All live in harmony though. There is a elected student union body called Gymkhana.

Yes. The campus is fully residential. There is a separate hostel for all first years and every room is shared by two people. The maintainence of hostels and mess food is above average and good care is taken of cleanliness.

The seniors are helpful in introducing us to the college be it academics or extra curriculur activities. The alumni network is strong and every year an alumni meet is organized where the alumni from the batch that graduated 25 years ago visit the college. Overall, the senior junior interaction and alumni network is pretty solid.

Through JEE Main 2019. I applied for all the college along with course of my choice with my All India Rank through JoSAA counselling. This is the best option that I got. We had to report for document verification to nearby centre after round 1 of counselling and then after round 7 we had to report to the college. The admission procedure include further document check, payment of fee and hostel allotment.

There are about 25 faculties in our department with everyone being a Ph.D holder with different specializations. Average age will be close to 45. Few had experience working in the industry before joining in as a lecturer. But, the teaching level is just above average with only a rare number of faculties having immense knowledge of their subject.
