Remarks
Great place to study and Learn i think we had a lot of fun and great learning all along lot of the courses were relevant because the learnings were applied in the job. Lot of extra curricular activities and complete freedom was given to learn and pick up new skills.
Entrance Preview
Normally, the selection process was through IIT JEE but previous few years, the college did their own entrance exam and set their own selection process, which selected and screened out candidates based on aggregate scores in the entrance exam and then did final selection post an interview.
Course Curriculum Overview
This was long time back but since specialization was in marine engineering, typically one had to specialize in subjects such as technical and machine drawing, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, strength of materials, mechanics of machines, naval architecture, marine electricity and marine auxiliary.
Internships Opportunities
Fantastic experience, though it was internship in some way, but we called it Workshop training and we had such internships in the second year and the third year of Engineering. We had companies like Mazagaon Dock, Naval Shipyards, Bombay Post Trust, Calcutta Port Trust etc, who invited us for the Practical training and offered stipend worth Rs 2500 per month.
Placement Experience
Since, at that time there was a huge demand for marine engineers. All good students had a choice to pick the companies they wanted to work in. Instead of companies selecting or rejecting candidates, it was the other way round most of the Shipping companies based out of singapore and Hong kong were preferred such as anglo eastern, NOL, mitsui, chevron etc.
College Events
We had an annual cultural event called " CACOPHONY", where all the major colleges in Kolkatta and even IIT Kharagpur and IIM, Kolkatta were invited and they participated in various competitions.
Fee Structure And Facilities
It was expensive during those days despite some level of subsidization. The mess fee was on the higher side. Hostel fees was subsidized. Huge costs were incurred in uniforms and books.
Fees and Financial Aid
Yes, Indian companies like SCI, great eastern company, scindia shhipping used to offer handsome scholarships plus the college also gave out 20 + odd scholarships to meritorious and needy students.
Campus Life
Yes, lot of debating competition inter college soccer and cricket tournaments internally, we had lot of inter batch tournaments football, cricket, table tennis, hockey.
Hostel Facilities
Mess food was great and the mess was well organized, Infact, I was the mess president for three years we had awesome food hostel facility was decent.
Alumni/Alumna
All I can say is that it is a very cohesive and close knit group lot of camaraderie amongst the batchmates, great friendship, seniors ragged you a bit but were fantastic mentors. Great place to be in the alumni network is very active and buzzing.
Exam Structure
No, It was very hectic but then last minute study prevailed with most students exams pattern was as follows, we had semesters, every year we had two semesters. Labs started from third year onward plus we had lot of practical training around Boilers, pumps, Compressor, Diesel Engines, Refrigeration plants in the workshop.
Faculty
It was a mixed bag not everyone was good but some of the faculty members covering SOM, naval architecture, machine drawing were very good rest were average.
