Remarks
The main advantage of our college is increased exposure to the outside world. There are amazing and helpful seniors ready to guide us through any rough patch. Besides, any project under a professor of IIT Kharagpur has its weightage in the concept development as well as in resume. That being said, our college is not all cupcakes and rainbows. The stress to have a decent CGPA, frequent unannounced tests are no cakewalk. But if this pressure is handled in a good way, can prepare us for the cruel world we are about to face after college. I feel it depends on the student's perspective. This college would provide me the platform to explore my qualities (if I have any). With a diverse curriculum and amazing alumni record, I have many options to choose from. I went in through JEE Advanced, so the portal is what I used to get into it. Also, the website of JoSAA was the final step. After a physical registration and a tiring orientation program, BAM! I finally got in.
Course Curriculum Overview
I always was interested in Physics, looking up at the night sky and talking to the stars (no I am not a psychopath, I just happen to personify the burning balls of fire and like having one-sided conversations with them.). This sparked my curiosity about why, how, and when the universe started. Hence, Masters of Science, Department of Physics became my home for the next five years. The faculty-student ratio is pretty appreciable, we have around 40-50 professors and about 200 students (including all five batches) in our Department. All the faculties are Doctorate holders in their own specific area of interests which range from Optics to Particle physics. We have a Mid-term exam and an End-term exam with small tests sprinkled throughout the semesters. there are lab tests that are easy mostly. the theory exams have mixed questions keeping in mind the hard-working as well as the talented population of our department. The frequency is mostly uniform with a couple of class tests per semester.
Placement Experience
Students become eligible for an internship program by CDC in their pre-final year. They are shortlisted by different companies and hired as interns during the summer break of the corresponding semester. We get visited by companies like Google, Microsoft, Adobe, Walmart as well as startups. No. of offers made hit close to a 1000 jobs. The percentage of students getting placed is generally close to 90 percent. I am planning on pursuing higher studies and getting a doctorate in Physics.
Fees and Financial Aid
This is where people complain generally. It is HUGE. Costs about three lakhs per annum, which for a government college is pretty unreasonable. We can avail Merit Cum Mean scholarships but it waives off only about 1.2 lakhs from the fee, and the remaining is still unplayable for many. That being said we get good amenities like Gymkhana and proper classrooms, libraries, and other infrastructure along with the education imparted to us which definitely has a lot more value. Also, basic science students get an INSPIRE Scholarship with 60k per annum with a 20k book allowance. Since I am in my sophomore year currently we don't get jobs from campusing. But the passing out seniors will definitely praise the Placement Cell, the one with the most number of placement offers.
Campus Life
It's amazing with great societies which help students to cultivate their interests. We conduct two fests in a year. One of them is the technical fest, which is Asia's largest Techno-Management fest and the other one is a cultural festival. The former is called Kshitij and the other one is the infamous Spring Fest.
Hostel Facilities
We get a fan, a table and a chair with a cot and a cupboard for a single student. In the fresher year, we had to share our rooms with two other roommates and in the next consecutive years, depending on hostel activity contributions they allot a single or a double sharing room. The meal quality is very nice, we get an overall nutritious food that is healthy as well. The taste might not be up to the mark, but the cleanliness is definitely taken care of. Hostel registration is compulsory for every student here and happens during the original registration process. I live in a hostel inside the IIT campus, not a rented room or PG.
Interview Experience
We had to take JEE Mains and on qualifying that exam we had to give JEE Advanced where the top 0.1 percent of students were selected.
