Mohit Chaudhary's Review On IIT Roorkee - Indian Institute Of Technology - [IITR], Roorkee

First of all, I took JEE main exam and cleared it with a score of 223/360 which made me eligible to give JEE Advanced in which I got a score of 274/504 and an All India Rank of 1044. So now, I had to choose between chemical engineering from IIT Bombay and Electrons and comm. From IIT Roorkee, I went for electronics as I was interested in it and also Roorkee being near to my hometown (Patiala) made me choose it.

There are two types of internship programs at our institute. First, in which you apply for a summer internship at IIT Roorkee and pay a sum of 5000 rs per month (No stipend) . This is under the Electronics and communication department. Now the second type is offered by companies like Microsoft which offer a stipend that varies.

We have great fests organized in our institution. Our cultural fest Thomso Is held in October every year and Cognizance is the Tech Fest which is held in March. Cognizance is the second-largest tech fest in Asia and sees participation from over 600 colleges. Thomso also had the participation of 600 plus colleges with over 12000 students coming to the fest. It has been named the youth festival of Uttarakhand.

Well, the fee is significantly less than other engineering colleges(except government colleges). It is feasible but still a bit expensive for an average family. The fee per semester is about 68600 rs. The institute fee is 56600 rs and the mess fee is 12000 rs per semester. The above figures are for UG programs.

Well, there are various banks which readily give loan to students. PNB and SBI are present on the campus and provide loans to students. Also, numerous scholarship opportunities are there for which there are exams from time to time in college.

The gender ratio is very bad in IIT Roorkee with just 5 girls per 100 boys but there is a very good environment in the campus as everyone is sensible and behaves like a literate person. There are various workshops organized by groups inside the campus as well as companies that come to the campus to organize various workshops which are very good. The labs have state of the art technologies and equipment and are very good for research work. Also, IIT Roorkee is very good in sports with a lot of very good players in almost every sport.

The seniors are very good and always ready to help. They can teach you any concept that you are stuck with and you can share any problem with them and they will help you solve it . The alumni network of our institution is also very strong with a lot of big names who are great people today. They all are connected to the institution and there are various alumni events in the campus which allow for a good amount of alumni interaction.

There are mid-semester and end semester exams in each semester which has about a 2-month gap between them. In mid-semester exams, there are two exams on a single day of two different subjects so it becomes very very difficult to cope up with your preparation. We need 75 % attendance in lectures to be eligible to give exams and the lectures are a waste of time so it is difficult to compete with other good students as the grading is relative which makes it more difficult.

The faculty of the college is not up to the mark. The professors are not even interested in teaching. All they do is show a PowerPoint presentation and leave. The standard of teaching is expected to be good as the college is a prestigious college in the nation but still, the professors are not good. They have a lot of research papers and may have enough knowledge but they are not good in teaching.
