Remarks
The management is not at all cooperative and will trouble you all your four years. Though I have heard of improvements from my juniors, yet I restrict to my experiences. Being a government funded institute, the functioning is pretty useless. There will be few times you will have to be very patient with the admin people and trust me, you can never ever bring out your temper.
Entrance Preview
I took AIEEE in 2010. At that time we had the concept of separate IIT JEE for IITs and IISc and AIEEE for other national, state and private institutes. I scored 138 marks on a total of 432 and my All India Rank was 36042. In the counselling round all I could get in my state(Haryana) was UIET K.U, Kurukshetra or GJU, Hissar or any private institute. I choose UIET initially because my family could not afford a private engineering institute. Then the notification for the physical counselling for the leftover seats at YMCA UST, a state government university, was released. After NIT Kurukshetra, the best institutes in Haryana state are by default the two state government universities namely, YMCA UST, Faridabad and DCRUST, Murthal. I live in Faridabad itself and my elder brother was in his 3rd year pursuing B.Tech. in Electrical Engg. from YMCA in 2010 and YMCA is just 3.5km from my home. I knew about the average placements at YMCA beforehand only. Also, the state government tag makes YMCA quite cheaper than other institutes. So, I chose YMCA without a second thought.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is designed quite well and the knowledge of the students is above average. There are 6 branches-Computer Science, IT, Mechanical, ECE, Electrical and EIC-Electronics Intrumentation and Control. It is the faculty that disappoints you. If you go ask students from any engineering college in India, you shall get a somewhat similar answer except for a few exceptions like the IITs, IISc and few of the NITs. Everyone agrees that during a B. Tech. course, one has to self-study only. Same is the case with YMCA. Most of the faculty is far below the minimum requisites of a college faculty. So, you can not expect to learn anything from them. Though there may be one or two exceptional professors who will actually teach you something.
Internships Opportunities
My internship was a seven-month insustrial training at the Power House of Escorts Agri Machinery Group Tractor Division in Faridabad. At YMCA, the 7th semester is a full industrial training semester with no exams and the result is based on your report from your mentor at the industry and your project report presented at the end of the internship. My experience was quite good. We handled the Fault Analysis, the switching of the power from the mains to the backup. There were 7 Diesel Generator Sets(DG Sets) and 5 Transformers at the manufacturing plant. We observed how an actual industry implements the Power factor considerations and approach maximum efficiency. Also, we learnt about the size and types of loads and the problems related to them in a manufacturing unit.
Placement Experience
The placements are above average. TCS is the biggest recruiters. For Computes department, the placements are in fact quite good. Samsung, Adobe, Snapdeal, Thoughtworks, TCS, Mahindra, Newgen, STMicroElectronics, Samsung Engineering, Samsung Heavy Industries, Honda, Maruti and Daikin are few of the main recruiters I can think of right now. For EEE departments there are not as good as Computers and Mechanical.
College Events
Elements Culmyca is YMCA's annual Cultutral-cum-tech fest and usually it is scheduled in months of February or March. The enthusiasm is very high and students get to explore a lot of things and the best part is that there is very little interference of the faculty in the organization of the fest.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The girls hostel is pretty fine and almost all of the girls stay there except for the day scholars. The boys hostel is a disaster and most of the boys prefer living at rented flats or PGs. Still, everyone stays at the hostel for at least a semester and experiences that life as well. The food is again great at girls hostel and average at the boys. Girls hostel can be rated an 8 on 10 while the boys hostel is 5.5 or 6 on 10. The fees is very low. I think it is almost 3000 rupees for both hostel and mess.
Fees and Financial Aid
There are many great scholarships and prizes. All India rank based scholarship and pointer based scholarships are usually 7000 per year to 40000 per year. I was eligible for 7000 per year scholarship. A friend of mine with a better rank had the complete tuition fee waived i.e. 40000 per year. The total annual fees for the college being 50000-60000 rupees per year.
Campus Life
Campus life is quite enjoyable. You have complete access to malls, movie theatres and markets. Being in NCR, the diversity and gender ratio is great. Still you will find lesser girls in mechanical engineering for obvious reasons. Delhi in now just a 30 minute metro ride. In fact YMCA has a metro station just outside its boundary. Sports fest is something that I wasn't involved in much but it used to be a treat to watch the cricket match between the faculty members. There are great literary, art, dramatics, music and technical clubs and societies. Many from these clubs have won great competitions at IITs and PEC and NITs.
Alumni/Alumna
The alumni network is just the opposite of great. Few big industrialists run the alumni organization and they throw parties among themselves and do not involve the college or its current students in the same. There are no alumni meets for the batches that I know of.
