Jesus and Mary College, B.A (HONS.) HISTORY

Remarks

With its massive Construction some of the pretty sights in JMC are nowhere to be found. Academically I hear the college is doing wonders and producing some of the best sports women like Apurvi Chandela, gold medal winner of 2014 Common Wealth Games,Glasgow in the women's 10m air rifle event.

Entrance Preview

Entrance to this college and the B.A. (Hons) Programme was on the basis of marks scored in class 12th board exams. Proximity to the college was a huge reason why I opted for the college as I was residing in Delhi Cantt. and the College is located in Chanakyapuri.

Course Curriculum Overview

3

The B.A. (Honours.) History Programme was of three years and we were the last batch for the annual Programme before the Semester System began. The Course for the subject was divided evenly over three years: ancient History of India and of the World in the first year,History of Medieval India and the World in the second year,History of Modern India and the world in the third year. Students were evaluated through a system of two assignments and annual exam for each subject. These subjects incorporated a wide area of topics in History.

Internships Opportunities

The most regular company coming for internships was Google and mostly the students from the Commerce Department were admitted to the same. However recently I hear there are new companies other than Google who provide jobs and internships.

Placement Experience

3.5

Never had the opportunity to venture the placement and job opportunities for myself.

College Events

4

The months from October to February was the season of Department Fests and College Fests celebrations of which would go beyond the College and would spread to Delhi University. The department fests included the teamwork of the students and teachers of the department. Whereas the College Fests were conducted with the financial contribution and muscle power of all Departments of the College and the Office staff. Sponsors were also brought in to help make the college fest a success. Within the deaprtment,Freshers's Party,Farewell,Teacher's Day Celebrations were common. Apart from this since the college was a Christian college the Christmas fest and Cake sale were also conducted by the College.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure was between Feasible and Expensive. By the time we came to the third year there was an increase in the fees merely due to new construction happening in the college. There was a Christian Quota which was applied to the Fees and other academic cutoffs.

Fees and Financial Aid

There were a number of scholarships divided over academics, sports, christian students and merit. However I availed no such Scholarships.

Campus Life

4.5

An all girls' college JMC was termed as 'Best Dressed College'. A college where a large population would wear attire from the top clothing line and some even going over the top. It was a fun mixture of girls some who were up to date with the latest fashion some who are Sisters and Nuns and the fashionably confused between the two. Most of the Honours courses had 25 to 30 girls' in once course, however the B.A. Programme course had 80-100 girls' divided over two sections. Apart from the College Fests and other department fests there were quite a few competition for example the Western Music competition or the National Social Services conducting a Women Defense Class etc and many more.

Hostel Facilities

3.5

The college does not have any Hostel. It did have a Canteen a well-stocked library, air-conditioned auditorium, huge gardens, football, cricket fields and clay-tennis courts, a gym and bathing rooms.

Alumni/Alumna

A weirdly astonishing feature of the interaction with the Seniors included buying the previous years class notes assignments and projects all just for Rs 2000 or sometimes more. Mostly the interaction with the seniors would be largely through the Department Fests or minimally while going for classes. The alumni network is weak as there are no alumni meets organised by the college.

Faculty

3

The History Department of Jesus and Mary College during our time especially consisted of highly qualified and experienced in terms of teaching, teachers. Currently most of those experienced teachers have retired and the department consists of young teachers and lecturers.

The course curriculum is a bit too theoretical and less practical. The exams in the college takes places every month which are seasonals and are for internal marking and then we have semester exams in every 6 months which accounts for the external marking.

Placement Experience:

Placements are available in college, the drive is quite extensive, everyone is made aware of the choices and options and counselling is present too. It is from the third year, students are eligible to apply for placements. Companies and organisations take part such as Niti ayog, Times, Geostrata, Prajatantra foundation, etc. Those who desire usually work on their CVs, keep on doi internships and then get a placement. The packages are not that impressive to be honest.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course is really very interesting. It keeps up with our expectations. Involves both practical and theoretical aspects to make sure that we are able to face the real world. Also, with the help of the guidance that we get from teachers we're able to ace both the aspects. The examinations also are based on applications, thus, helping us to enhance ourselves in all possibilities.

The course offers many things for students interms of their further academic pursuits or any placement they are looking for. Talking about the areas of improvement and teaching methods there are none. The exams of the respective subject are to happen. They take test 1 , test 2 and there is final exams.

I got a seat in Ramjas College. It is a north-campus college. The infrastructure is too good compared to the remaining colleges. The teaching also going well but I faced some language problems. I'm from south India so I don't understand Hindi properly. But here mostly they teach in Hindi only and English is used very rarely.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course itself is prestigious and is mostly opted for by people who plan either on preparing for the Civil Services or those who want to pursue academia. The course structure is framed in a manner that you don't just simply study history there, but you ingrain a critical viewpoint of a young historian. The faculty of History Hons. has some of the best Professors in the University, although you will in any course at any college find some teachers below your expectations, you don't have to bear them for more than 1 or 2 semesters. Passing the exams is not very difficult, but yes scoring above average is. If you get a GPA ranging from 6 to 7, you've performed fine. Above that is considered a Very good performance in Hons. courses of Social sciences at Delhi University. there are semester exams every 5- 6 months
