Remarks

Only problem is that the administration has too much power. While this is helpful in maintaining a high level of academic environment but some of its decisions are highly authoritative and unidirectional with no involvement of students in the discussions. They listen to our needs and some of them are implemented. But as i said some of the decisions are highly illogical and curb social freedom.

Entrance Preview

I took both JEE-MAIN and JEE-Advanced 2013. I cleared both. Score in main was 241/360 and in advanced i don't remember . But i qualified both within general rank of 10000. IIST rank list is made based on Main but you have to qualify Advanced to get into the rank list. IIST rank list i was at 200 place. My motivation was to become an Aerospace Engineer and ISRO being the only entity in India working in space technology, it was an perfect choice.

Course Curriculum Overview

5

Course curriculum is top class in the world. We are actually taught full Aerospace and half Mechanical(Manufacturing) engineering, if you compare the same course in IITs. You have to study very hard as lots of assignment and exams are conducted during the whole semester. Each subject are taught as if they are the only course being taught. So you can now guess the syllabus content. Initial courses are fundamental theoretical based while later we get to focus on design and research. Per ca-pita output of research based work is among the highest with undergraduate papers in recognized international journal and conferences (eg. AIAA, JFM,etc).

Internships Opportunities

For the students of this institute, a compulsory internship after 3rd year in the summer is fully funded by the college. For external students, internships are purely faculty dependent. Student have to contact faculties directly and criteria has to be worked out individually. Some of our faculties provide internships though Indian Academy of Sciences Scholarship.

Placement Experience

4

Almost all of them is placed in ISRO after B-Tech. Its a government job in Group A pay-band 3 with basic pay 5040 (6th pay commission). Now monthly salary is around 72k per month based on my knowledge from my seniors placed in ISRO. Many alumni are doing higher studies, some have startups while some work in private space industry outside India.

College Events

2.5

There is one annual cultural fest named DHANAK and one annual technical fest named CONSCIENTIA. Both are well recognized in the southern Indian peninsula. With footfall of over 10000 people in each of these fest, it is quite large. The college also conducted SPIC MACEY chapter in 2015 which promotes cultural music, dance and art work. A intra-college FOOD fest is also organised annually. CONCORDS are the monthly music and dance nights which gives students an opportunity to show their talents. All major festivals like Diwali, Holi is celebrated. Biggest celebration is on the eve of ONAM in which institute organises a celebration with competitions and prizes. Institute also conducts annual sports day.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Students studying in IIST is fully funded by Department of Space, Government of India under a scholarship scheme. You have to maintain a minimum GPA of 7.5 to be eligible for the scholarship. If you fail to do so then your semester fees with tuition fees, hostel fees, mess fees comes out to be around 50K. This is also valid for eligibility of job in ISRO.

Fees and Financial Aid

As mentioned student in IIST is fully funded by the DOS scholarship given you maintain a certain amount of academic level. Loans are available through for students from Union Bank Of India branch in the campus.

Campus Life

5

Campus life is mostly academic oriented. Extra curricular activities are limited by the facilities. Gender ratio is better with 1/2 ratio for girl to boys ratio. Projects in various field are floated by the faculties. Summer Projects is organised by the AeroClub of IIST in different fields like robotics, aeronautics, control, avionics, etc. Their is no politics. Decision of the college administration of final and binding. Very strict law is followed for discipline. It is ragging free campus and no student demonstrations are allowed. This college is top level space science research institute with no space for any politics, religion or inequality. All are oriented towards only science and learning. Most competitions are organised during the festivals. Various national level workshops are organised by the departments. AeroClub organised SpaceUp Unconference 2015 India which was a success.

Hostel Facilities

4

Hostel facilities are excellent. Being new institute all hostel infrastructure is intact. Each room is either shared by two or is single. Rooms are furnished with vitrified tile, a book stack, Table , chair, bed and a Godrej Almirah. Mess food is hygienic with all automated facilities for making Roti, Dishwashing, etc. Food taste is not that good. Even if all the ingredients are given, cooking is not up to mark. This is purely a factor due to non availability of quality cooks not the infrastructure or ingredients. Food is mostly a blend of north indian and south indian food which makes it almost difficult for all the students in the campus as non get a taste of their own cuisine.

Alumni/Alumna

Alumni network is not that large till now being a new college started in 2007. But it is definitely growing by the passing year. Alumnus is very helpful and cooperative. They are the ones who give us the insight into the work culture and condition in ISRO. Good interaction is present within the college for all the years thorugh various clubs like AeroClub, Quizz Club, Astronomy Club, Movie Club ,etc. Also two very advanced technology institute project is going on in IIST. One is the sounding rocket program in the Aerospace Engineering and IIST Nano-Satellite Program in the Avionics branch these all provide an good platform for various group interaction.

Exam Structure

Exam structure is very simple. It is continuous evaluation based grading. Two quizzes are conducted during the semester which is mostly monthly. Quizzes comprise of 30% weight. 20% weight is given for internal assessment which is purely dependent on the faculty. Mostly assignments and projects are part of this. 50% is given to End Semester exam. Attendance is compulsory with 80% minimum for appearing in the end semester exam. Labs are very hectic. Initial semester has more labs which decreases as the you progress through the years. Being a new institute all labs are highly updated with sophisticated instruments and machine as used in space industries. Some facilities in the lab is used by ISRO also. Later semesters are chilled as you would be habituated by the lifestyle in first two years.

Faculty

5

Faculties are the strongest pillar of this institute. With the best faculty to student ratio of 1/5 in India. They are very supportive outside class while same amount of seriousness and punctuality inside the lecture hours. Faculties can be approached any time to clear your doubts or queries. They are just best part of this college.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I would rate the EEE course curriculum around 8-8.5 /10 in terms of relevance. The curriculum provides strong fundamentals in core electrical engineering subjects and prepares students well for core jobs and higher studies. The course curriculum was revised in 2023, and our batch is the 1st batch under the new curriculum. however, there are still limited coding ,AI and data science subjects in EEE ,which could be improved. Exams are conducted times per semester and are generally moderately difficult.
