Internship Experience of Data Scientist

I gave an entrance exam for GGISPU and all the colleges covered under JEE Mains. Due to my low rank in JEE Mains, I didn't get Computer Science in any college like DTU, NSIT or NIT Delhi. And Thapar University is a well-reputed institution and counted among top private engineering colleges of India like BITS Pilani. Minimum marks for the GENERAL category for Computer Engineering admission in TIET (Thapar Insitute of Engineering and Technology) in 2015 was 145 for the Punjab Quota and 155 for outsiders. Counseling for 2015 admission was very well organized and managed, TIET has a society FROSH which collaborates with admission cell and gave all the support needed to students and their families to decide which branch they should choose. Also, every single member of FROSH at TIET was fully committed and also gave an individual campus tour to me and my father.

a) I have always been very interested in CS from my 11th class, hence it was decided for me. b) In the CS department, the faculty-to-student ratio is 1:60 c) Every faculty member teaching at Thapar is at least Post Graduate and those too are Assistant Professor. Every Lecturer and Professor is at least a PhD. The teaching method is also very efficient. It was completely digital, PPT's were used with proper explanation and the classrooms are designed ergonomically to give a proper view and impact every student. d) Every semester there were exams two times, i.e Mid-Sem and End-Sem, along with Sessionals like Lab Test and Assignments going whole semester with the pre-decided schedule.

I was offered an internship at CSIO-CSIR, Celebal Technologies at Mumbai. I chose an internship I got off-campus in an organization called Noon, a Middle East-based e-commerce firm.I was a Data Science Intern and my stipend was Rs 25000 per month. I developed a duplicate product detection system for Noon.

From Sem 5, students become eligible for internships and from sem 6 onwards companies start arriving on campus for placements.A lot of companies like D.E. Shaw, VMWare, Microsoft, Accenture, Deloitte, TCS and a lot more comes, Avg package at TIET is 7.5 LPA. Thapar has a placement record of 100%. If there are students who have passed and have not been placed yet, they also get opportunities to appear and sit in placements for 8-9 months of time after their final semester. I am a Data Analyst at Spacejoy.

TIET is an extremely well-financed and principled college. There is a 50% scholarship (of academic fees) for the top 10 percentile of every branch. During admission also, if a student is a state board topper or board topper, then also they are entitled to a full scholarship. I got placed in Techno-Legal Startup LUMENCI with a package of 8.4 LPA.

There are more than 120 societies in Thapar which provides an enormous opportunity for every student to learn a lot apart from academics. There are annual tech fests like tech fests, sports fest (URJA), cultural fest (SATURNALIA), mechanical fests organized by students of society called FATEH and a lot more. A well-populated library with diverse books and ample sitting space for everyone who's willing to go and study in Library. All the classrooms are equipped with a screen, green board, projector with installed HDMI and VGA cables, fully air-conditioned and well lit in every corner.At TIET there is space, types of equipment, and coaches for the majority of the sports. Thapar has its own Swimming Pool, football field, basketball court, cricket, hockey, Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis and many others.

After recent changes in the infrastructure, most of the hostels in the TIET campus are fully Air-conditioned, some are with attached washroom (in Hostel-M), double shared rooms (Hostel-M and J), triple shared rooms (Hostel A, B, C, and H). There are more than 14 hostels in Thapar named from Hostel A to N.Mess food is decent at the majority of the TIET hostels. Hostel J's mess serves the best food and is often awarded as the best hostel in North India. The registration process is quite easy and rooms are also affordable. If someone needs to change their room, those requests are also very well responded to and taken into consideration.
