Remarks
Firstly, you need to fill IMU CET for entering this college. In 2015 when I took this exam, last rank of the general category was 650. Recently, it has come down to around 500. Admission process is smooth nowadays with online counselling. You can apply for BSC Nautical Science too through the same exam i.e. IMU CET. Finally you will have to come down to the college where you are selected during the counselling rounds. The admission process will be carried on there itself. The process there is very smooth and easy. You will have to get yourself medically tested (through one of the DG Shipping certified Doctor & Lab) before coming to take the admisson. You can find the list of certified Labs & Doctor on the website of DG Shipping.
Course Curriculum Overview
Frankly, I chose this course just to enjoy and roam around the world for free and eventually get paid for doing so. And like me, many of my batchmates thought the same but that's, not the scenario. It is a Blue-Collar job. Sweat all over your body and you still working inside a 50 degree closed space. Moving ahead, we had 4 sections of 54-55 students in each. Individual faculty were there for every subject. Most of the faculy are ex-seafarer. All of them sailed as Chief Engineer. Practically, qualified enough! The rest of the faculty are okayish. The teaching method is still old-school (Blackboard, hand-written assignments, etc.) since the professors are themselves old. Exams are held twice a year. Total of 8 semesters in the whole course. Each semester there are 6 papers. In between semesters, there are periodic tests held twice. In short, the curriculum is well-balanced. You get time for your college life too. Exams are moderately hard. Just have to pass them with 50% marks
Internships Opportunities
There is nothing sort of internship in this college. You directly board on the ship for the first 6-7-8 months and thatis termed as a training period in this field. You are appointed as Fifth Engineer on the ship whose work is to understand the working of machineries and maintain all of it in his diary which is signed weekly by the Chief Engineer on-board. Every company will board you on the ship as 5th Engineer only. Lastly, Cadets can find themselves a suitable internsip offer (if they eagerly want to learn some machine working) from outside and complete it in between their semester breaks which is hardly of 30-40 days.
Placement Experience
Campus Placement is good comparing it with other colleges of the same field or other government engineering colleges as well. More than 70% of placement generally happens through in-campus placement. The rest of the cadets can apply from outside the campus. Many Shipping company's offices are situated in Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, etc. Students start getting placement offers from the 5th semester, which is quite good. But most of the cadets get placed in the final year itself. The only criteria to apply for a company is that you have to be all-clear i.e have passed all the papers. NYK Lines, MSC, SCI, Anglo-Eastern, Great Eastern, Fleet Management, Scorpio Management, ChellShip are some of the companies that regularly offer placement for the cadets. Highest package was offered by Scorpio Management that is 75thousand per month in the training period. Average salary is around 35Thousand per month. Personally, I sailed for 7 months and didn't like the work profile so I am switching to some other field.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee is a bit on the costly side. 2 Lakh 25 Thousand per year equals 9Lakh for the course. It is inclusive of everything, from hostel to mess fees, books to wifi charges. Exam fees are not included in that. The university runs a scholarship program for meritious students. There is tough competition among the students to achieve that. Many students get scholarships from their respective states or their guardian's employer too. Generally, all the students who have passed in all their papers get a placement but a few can be left out too. In our batch of 220 candidates, 170 got placed through campus interviews. The rest can apply from outside (Mumbai, Chennai) and get placed. Salary in the training period depends on company to company and it ranges from 25Thousand per month to 75Thousand. Overall the placement scenario is good comparing to other colleges in the same field
Campus Life
College Life has been the constant highlight of this college since its inception. A Candidate goes through rigorous training and is one of the best in the industry when he starts his training. College Life is just Superb. Every student of this college will tell you the same. TEMPEST is the annual fest of the college. It includes a Cultural, Tech, Sports fest all in one and is held in the first week of November for 5 days within the campus. This is the best period for 1st year. Moving oN to the Library, there are most of the books available related to this field. But if you are a fiction head, it would disappoint you. Classrooms are divided into 2 buildings, some of them are air-conditioned while others have just fans and airy windows in them. Teaching is still done on the backboard. Sports is highly celebrated and appreciated by the student but college doesn't sponsor trips to other college fests. There are various clubs running within the college. Some of them are Theatre Club, Debate club
