Remarks
I applied to many colleges including VIT, TIET, BITS and IPU. Although, I was selected in almost all of them for Computer Science, I chose Thapar based on Nirf ranking and reviews from my acquaintance who have passed out/studying in these colleges. Apart from that, Thapar also provided an Open-day seminar before Admissions counselling which was great for experiencing the coding life. The admission was on basis of both JEE and board merits, tho I chose JEE mode for scholarships benefit. The cutoffs were quite high and I barely made it in first counselling. After that, the process included document verification and opting for hostel.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose COE because I was interested in Gamedev and AI prior to joining college and can continue down any of these paths here. The course curriculum may seem a bit overboard from a glance but it has been designed quite carefully for the students. The faculty-student ratio is not good (1:100) for the CSE department which is one of the flaws here and many labs are taken by PhD scholars who are just awful. Although the faculty here is quite qualified and requires high standards to teach here, the lower ratio diminishes its meaning. The WORST thing about this college is how little the administrative authorities care about the students studying here which have further amplified during the COVID situation. They only focus on attracting more students to get admitted here than caring about the ones that are currently studying.
Internships Opportunities
As I am in 2nd year, I haven't yet experienced the internships yet although we have gotten the opportunity from JP Morgan & Chase for an internship this year with a good stipend. I believe the internships for the students are quite reasonable although can't vouch yet.
Placement Experience
The campus placements of college are quite good with many companies coming including Samsung, Airtel, JP Morgan etc. The recent collaboration of college with NVidia for some of its courses has also included it in potential recruiters for upcoming years. Although I have never gone through the placements myself (2nd year), I can't say much about it.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees structure for the complete course is designed for all 4 years of the students and is available during the first year itself. There are fee hikes every year but you can see them before the admission too and choose accordingly, no sudden unpleasant surprises there. Although the scholarships are quite good here, the recent changes in scholarship criteria this year without any prior notifications to the students is what put me off with the authorities here.
Campus Life
The campus life is the best thing in the college and probably the only aspect without any Cons. The college has a huge variety of societies that conduct events and fests over the year. The college also boasts a huge collection of books in its library which can be booked online too. The classes are large a spacious that can accommodate the huge amount of students to the college is admission to.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel fees are quite reasonable although do not include mess fees. The mess meal quality is 5/10 but there are hostel committees consisting of students who are helpful with the issue. The hostel registration during the first year was quite easy, done right after the document verification. If the no. of students opting for a hostel are more than it can accommodate, AGPA merit is considered.
