Help for aspiring IITians by an IITian

It stands at NIRF rank -7. And in research facilities it is the best institute in India after IISc Bangalore. It boasts of being the most beautiful campus amongst all IITs. It is the only IIT providing single rooms to freshers! The teachers and seniors are very helping and the atmosphere is pretty good in terms of academics, friends and what not..

I chose this course because I will get enough time for side hustle apart from academics. And demand for research in biosciences is reaching new heights.. thanks to COVID-19. Faculties are pretty good here. Qualifications being Ph.D holders from IITs or foreign universities and having enough experience to clear your doubts. Teaching method can vary from being very interesting to dull in some cases; it all depends on which subject you have interest. As online classes are going on presently, a single teacher can address easily 150+ students. Exams were after a month/ 15days of topic being taught but in midsems and endsems the frequency of exams is very high. Questions are doable mostly if you have been attentive in class and solved few questions.

During the summer internship placement drive of 2021, around 260 students were offered internship opportunities and the highest stipend stood at INR 2 Lakhs. IT/software, finance, software were the prominent profile offering internships. Companies include Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Flipkart, Adobe, Goldman Sachs, etc. As I am in the first year, I don't have much idea on the projects/tasks offered by the companies.

Generally in the last semester students become eligible for campus placements. However internship opportunities are available for the first semester itself if you have the required skills. In the 4th semester, major recruiting companies visit for internships and if you perform well they may offer you PPO (pre placement offer). There were a total of 140 recruiters for the 2020-21 session. Microsoft, Google, Qualcomm, Oracle, American Express, Walmart, Adobe, Razorpay, Groww were the prominent recruiters. INR 70 LPA was the highest placement while the average package is approx. 14 LPA. 57.16% were placed in 2020-21 as compared to 65.28% last year. Analyst, Software Development Engineer, Product Engineer, Systems Engineer, Analog/ Digital Engineer, Engineer Trainee, Systems Engineer were the major profiles offered. My plan is very volatile at this stage. I may enter into software or analyst profile or may end up preparing for civil services exam.

Tuition fees is 1lakh per sem. with hostel and mess related fees amounting to 25k per sem. Other fees on adding amount to approx. 1.3 lakh per sem. This fee structure is for students belonging to general category. For students with reservations, fee will be much less. Currently I am in the first year, so I don't have much idea on placements though IITG has a pretty good on campus placements record. There are lots of internship opportunities from E-cell club and you can apply over sites like Internshaala as well.

Alcheringa is the annual cultural fest and Techniche is the tech fest of IITG. Spread over 3 days and 4 nights, Alcheringa is conducted towards the end of January every year while Techniche is probably conducted in the month of June/July. Spread over approx. 700 acres with a spectacular scenic beauty, it is a hub of creating memories with friends as we travel different places within campus by cycle or foot, chill out, have some nice food over food court, etc. The central library has plenty of books and journals on every domain to cater to your needs. You can self-issue books and self-return before the stipulated time. As classes are being held online I have no idea regarding the amenities on classrooms. There is a central gym, playgrounds for athletics, cricket, football, etc. Basketball, tennis and badminton court are also there. And lot many sports facilities like swimming, table tennis, snooker, etc. are also present. The taste of food over the mess of Manas hostel is the best amongst all. There are a lot of clubs where you can join based on the answers you give to their recruiting questions and criteria. Starting from Consulting and analytics club, finance club, coding club, electronics club till dramatics club and literary club, the list is plenty enough to suit your interests. E-cell called Udgam, and technothlon and many others have their proper websites where we can reach them for any query and get to know their works, upcoming ideas, etc. Infrastructure varies from hostel to hostel. Ex. Brahmaputra and kapili hostel are known to have great amenities and building sense while Disang and Dibang hostels somewhere lag behind. Disang doesn't have its own hostel library and the mess was constructed just a couple of months back. Overall, the campus experience is very satisfactory and mesmerizing.

I was allotted Disang hostel. Though the outside look of the hostel is very ordinary, the amenities available is not disappointing. There are washrooms maintaining adequate student-washroom ratio with proper hygiene. Geyser is available. The newly made mess in my hostel serves great meal, only second to Manas meals. The room has a bed, enough shelves for keeping the necessary items that you would have brought along. There is a study table, chair and a table-lamp with LAN facility. I am satisfied the rooms provided. There is no library in my hostel though there are hostel libraries in Brahmaputra, Manas, etc. We have small sized gym, music room, T.V. room, sports room. Hostel and mess fees amount to total of 25k per sem.

Qualifying JEE Advanced with rank above than the closing rank of IIT Guwahati. I qualified Jee adv in 2020 with a score of 124/396 and AIR 8623.
