Vivekananda College, B.A. Programme (Mathematics + Science)
Reviewed on Jul 30, 2021(Enrolled 2019)

Remarks

My only preference was the University of Delhi. DU has the most sorted admission criteria as you only need to fill one form and that makes you eligible for every college affiliated with the University of Delhi. When the cutoffs were out I was eligible for many colleges including PGDAV, Maharaja Agrasen College, Kalindi College, Bhimrao Ambedkar College, and Vivekananda College. I choose Vivekananda College because it was the nearest and had an A grade from NAAC. This college was suggested by a few of my seniors too. The other reason was that my course B.A. Programme demands for subject combinations as major subjects. VNC, being closest and offering me my preferred subjects (B.A. Programme with Mathematics and Computer Applications at 80%) was my choice hence. A deduction of 2.5% was done due to the change of stream as I had science (non-medical) in my +2. The admission faculty was very welcoming and even the members of the student body were there to help. I loved the college at once.

Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

I choose BA Programme because it gave me two majors in one undergraduate degree. No other course or any university does the same. At the same time, both subjects (Mathematics and Computer Science) are interlinked somehow, helping me in my postgraduate. The faculty at Vivekananda College is great and hardworking. Every teacher is a PhD at my college. There is a 30:1 student-teacher ratio at VNC. The exams are held twice a year for 2 semesters per year. However, due to COVID semester exams for I and II years (Even Semester) were cancelled in 2020 and 2021. The semester exams for the odd semester were held online in OBE (open book exams) mode. While when they were cancelled the evaluation was done based on ABE mode (assessment based evaluation). The exams for final years were online during 2020 and 2021.

Internships Opportunities

0.5

There are no internship opportunities available with my college as the placement cell is not very active. But there is a central placement cell by the University of Delhi that works well. I have been part of any yet. So, I've no idea how they work.

Placement Experience

1.5

My college being an off campus college doesn't have a very active placement cell. However, in 2019 MNCs like Genpact did do some placements from our college. There is also a central placement cell in the University of Delhi where every DU student can enrol with a minimal fee of 100Rs. Students can join placement cells in their 2nd year for internships, while 3rd year students are eligible to sit in placements. Students with a CGPA above 7.0 get the most placements. I plan to pursue my post graduation after graduation.

Fees and Financial Aid

Being a government college the fees of every course is as minimal as Rs. 13,000/year. My college has a student aid society that helps financially weak students to get a full fee refund every year. This is an initiative by my college to help students in need. No fee hike was done during the COVID year. However, our principal mam gave a concession of Rs.4000 on the yearly fees in 2020 seeing the financial crisis all around. Recently they've decided to take no fees from students who lost their parents due to COVID.

Campus Life

3.5

The annual fest of my college is called 'PALLAVI'. There are many cultural societies in my college such as dramatics, classical music, debate and quiz, English literature, western dance and many more. The annual fest is held every year for 3 days in February or March where every cultural society organises its own fest with various competitions. The last day of the fest is a star night were Bollywood actors and singers come to give us a musical night. Our college has almost every cultural activity and various sports. There is a gymnasium to work out, a running track and seperate feilds for hockey, volleyball, netball etc. The library has 2 floors where every book is available from fiction, non-fiction, academics, weekly jounals, newspapers etc. Computers are also available in the library if students require some personal use. Classrooms are airy and big with smart class projectors. There are separate labs for every department and a common room for students to relax during breaks.

Placement Experience:

Placements are available in college, the drive is quite extensive, everyone is made aware of the choices and options and counselling is present too. It is from the third year, students are eligible to apply for placements. Companies and organisations take part such as Niti ayog, Times, Geostrata, Prajatantra foundation, etc. Those who desire usually work on their CVs, keep on doi internships and then get a placement. The packages are not that impressive to be honest.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course is really very interesting. It keeps up with our expectations. Involves both practical and theoretical aspects to make sure that we are able to face the real world. Also, with the help of the guidance that we get from teachers we're able to ace both the aspects. The examinations also are based on applications, thus, helping us to enhance ourselves in all possibilities.

I got a seat in Ramjas College. It is a north-campus college. The infrastructure is too good compared to the remaining colleges. The teaching also going well but I faced some language problems. I'm from south India so I don't understand Hindi properly. But here mostly they teach in Hindi only and English is used very rarely.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course itself is prestigious and is mostly opted for by people who plan either on preparing for the Civil Services or those who want to pursue academia. The course structure is framed in a manner that you don't just simply study history there, but you ingrain a critical viewpoint of a young historian. The faculty of History Hons. has some of the best Professors in the University, although you will in any course at any college find some teachers below your expectations, you don't have to bear them for more than 1 or 2 semesters. Passing the exams is not very difficult, but yes scoring above average is. If you get a GPA ranging from 6 to 7, you've performed fine. Above that is considered a Very good performance in Hons. courses of Social sciences at Delhi University. there are semester exams every 5- 6 months
