NIT Silchar is the Institute of National Importance setup by MHRD. It is the 9th best NIT and is one of the prestigious institutes with a lush green campus sprawling over 650 acres, great infra, free LAN availability, and great sports and cultural exposure. The Labs are decent and a lot of oppurtunities available to develop a great personality in both technical and social aspects. Year round activities make sure overall development. The campus placements are excellent, credit of which goes to the disciplined, dedicated and hard working Training and Placement Cell of College. More than 85 percent of the students have decent job offers before graduation, Companies like Microsoft, Amazon, L&T, Goldman Sachs, Samsung, Deloitte, Maruti Suzuki, Dalmia, Oracle, Saint Gobain, SAP, Mahindra, ZS Associate visit the campus and hire a good no. of students every year.

FEE Structure is based on the family income. Sufficient considerations and fee waivers are provided to student belonging to less than 1 lac pa family income, along with the students with 1-5 lac pa income category, SC/ST/PwD. Scholarships are provided under different government schemes along with Medical Insurance for all. BHM (Boarding and Hostel Management) fees is same for all students i.e. 15500 Rs. Per semester.

The Institute funds all sorts of technical, cultural, sports, literary and innovation/entrepreneurship clubs. This makes the campus life highly interesting. Institute has 9 boys hostel, 4 Girls Hostel and 1 married PG hostel for the students. The hostels are decent, food varies from mess to mess but overall satisfactory. Both Non Veg and Veg meals are provided at an afforadable cost. Each room has LAN Ports acc. to the no. of occupants. First Year Boys are provided seperate hostel to prevent ragging (it does not happen in campus though). All other batches live together in different hostels. The occupancy of rooms is decided on basis of your cpi from 3rd year onwards. The washrooms are common but sufficient and cleaned everyday. Laundry service available in hostels on paid basis. Geysers are installed for hot water supply. Canteens are provided in all the hostels which give break from mess food or to satisfy cravings between the meals.
