My engineering at IIT Bhubaneshwar

IIT Bhubaneshwar, ranked 169th in Asia and 196th in the world university rankings and amongst the emerging economies respectively. It ranked 4th in India among other 9 engineering institutions and first in decent work and economic growth. This is why I shortlisted the institution for my undergraduate studies. I applied from the official college website which required the basic details. I scored 92% in HSC and 90% in SSC. This was more than the cutoff of 85% in HSC and SSC. The JEE Advanced Ranking cutoff had an opening rank of 3221 and a closing rank of 5005. This was for the general category. However, relaxion in cutoffs is provided to SC, ST, OBC and other reserved categories. Computer science engineering is one of the most in-demand careers, and IIT Bhubaneshwar was in-line with the industry demands.

The syllabus and curriculum were totally updated from year to year to keep up with the latest technologies and introductions. The professors here are known to have a learning mindset and keep studying and researching to keep up with the industry standards. The faculty-student ratio was such that each student gets the proper attention of the professor while needed, i.e. 9:1. The syllabus included topics like Digital electronics, C programming, computer networks, Fundamentals of operating systems, Java programming, C++, Database management systems, visual programming, etc. The terminal exams were conducted at the end of the semester with timely quizzes every month.

Computer Science students usually qualify for the positions like IT analyst, software engineer, network architect, hardware engineer, programmer, junior data scientist, etc. The placement rate was around 90%, since the remaining either did not get the placement or went on for further studies like masters or PhD. Here, the highest package offred was 56 lakhs while average package bagged was 16 lakh per annum. The median package stood at 26 lakh per annum. Top recruiters included Jaguar Land rover, Goldman sachs, GE India, Google, Microsoft and Amazon. Recruiters preferred candidates with previous work experience. And hence, candidates are expected to join an internship or live projects of research and development before sitting in the placement.

Need-based scholarship is provided to 20 students with family incomes less than 8 lakhs. There is a separate scholarship for SC students under the scheme of Top class education for scheduled caste students. Other scholarships include the MCM scholarship, however, the awardees for this are only limited to up to 15% of the total engineering batch. If the students are not eligible for the scholarship, they can take up the ICICI Bank student loan at the minimal rate of interest of 9%.

IIT, Bhubaneshwar is the first IIT institution to set up a marine campus. The other campus of IIT Bhubaneswar had laboratory factories set up known as the institute for minerals and materials technology and a central room and training centre for laboratory and workshop facilities respectively. It has a 300 sq feet central library with a collection of more than 23000 textbooks of all editions and authors. The members of the library can also have access to other resources like ebooks, journals, e-databases and abstract indexing services. Alma fiesta, is the annual socio-cultural festival of this college. The events here include cultural dances, singing vocals, sketching and a youth marathon. Societies of the college include Astronomy society, programming society, fine arts, literature, entrepreneurship, Photography, robotics, social welfare, etc.
