Thinking of a career in Marine Field

Three years before the admission to this college was only through IIT JEE,generally the EML people rather prefer to join this lucrative field because of lack of knowledge.But now the pattern has changed completely and its decided by a COMMON ENTRANCE TEST conducted by the INDIAN MARITIME UNIVERSITY in between the month of APRIL-MAY.A common merit list cut off of around 140 is considered safe for getting into this topmost college of this field.I was having a general rank of 7736 in AIEEE and a rank in EML in JEE,still i chose to join this fiels.I was guided by senior of mine who is now a class 1 officer in this field.Two most important factor for me to join Marine-1-If you are above average in academics you can easily get a job here and that too comparable to a fellow IIT graduate2-You have a chance to visit whole world free of cost.

Course duration is of four years. Marine Engineering is 80 % Mechanical Engineering and rest conclusive of Eectrical, Electronics, Control Engineering, Computer science. Main subjects are IC engines, Marine Auxilliaries, Boiler, Marine Electrical, Strength of Materials and a lil bit Thermo dynamics. Elective subjects include Management Sciencrs, Surface and Coating Engineering, Double hull tankers. ELECTIVES ARE NOT TAUGHT IN ALL SEMESTER, but only in one 6th and 8th semesters.

Almost 15 companies visit for campus placements every year for a batch of around 200 students. This include some of the finest names of this field incl NYK LINES JAPAN, SCI, ANGLO EASTERN, MSC, FLEET MANAGEMENT, BW, MAERSK LINES, MSI, TORM and many more. Initial stipend ranges from 300 $ pm to 1200 $ pm. As you progress more in this field you can easily get upto 12000 $ pm.

Almost everyone who were All clear got placed in our batch. As I mentioned earlier about 15 companies visit every year and they will keep on visiting accounting to the goodwill maintained and good graduates which pass every year. Initial Package is less as they are only in training period. Once the cadet completes his 6 month mandatory on board training he has to give an exam for obtaining a mandtory certificate to sail as class 4 engineer. A class 4 engineer easily gets 2-4 lacs pm and he will then give exams to finally becum a class 1 engineer who will earn a min of 6-12 lacs pm.

Exams are mainly divided into 2-3 class tests (called internal) followed by a Semester exam (external) Some subjects demands for viva or oral examinations also but its like any other college exams. Its a little bit hectic but you cant omit this from the system, we all know exams are vital.One distinguishing feature is here unlike all other colleges passing marks are 50 % each for internal and external which make this a little tougher compared to others where passing marks are assingned at 33 %.

It will cost you around 9 lacs for 4 year programme. It includes tution fees,hostel and messing charges,books and uniforms. SBI give loans every year too the needy students and the process is much simplified. Past records are very good as maximum no of students clear their loans within 4 years of passing from the college, thanks to the handsome amount of package they got.

Yes!! Their is a fee waiver for backward class students and girls have to pay only half of their fees. Also state govt scholarship program helps deserving student alot. As I mentioned SBI gives loans to every one who desire. No interest to be paid for college duration also.

Campus life is full of excitement and there is a wave of energy everytime.This is a training college and descipline should have to be maintained all the time.Seniors are very supportive and are willing to help in any conditions. College has its own Workshop in which an old ship is put for demonstration. Girls input in the college is less, in my time only 3 were there. But college is providing extra facilities for girl cadets they are given finest hostels and their fees are just half of males. Faculties are more caring towards them and no case of harassment against girl cadet has even came to notice. College environment is ideal for every student irrespectice of their cast, creed ethinicity or colour. College is free from any political gatherings and as such meetings are barred.

Hostel facilities are somewhat poor as compared to private colleges. Wifi connection is available for a nominal feels.Water cooler is given attached with acquaguards. Cleanliness was an issue during our first years but it resolved in subsequent years. 4 junior share a room but final year students get their personal rooms. Every student will get his own accomodation and college provides room for every student enrolled here. No need to stay outside and even outside staying is not allowed here.

No need to say about DMET, you can hear the name of this college in every shipping companies. They respect the quality students and students always try hard to maintain the repo of their college. Many ex students have opened their own companies and many more are GM of other companies throughout the world. This factor is greately helpful as they are just willing to help by just hearing that the student is from DMET.

Tempest is the annual college fest organised every year in the month of Nov. This is a grand fest and a very famous one in Kolkata. It is celebrated for 5 days and includes dance, singing, mockery competion, street play, fashion shows, sports activities, online gaming competitions, model making competition. Varios Metal band give their performances including a comedy show hosted by some famous personality. In our time Shreya Goshal has given her dazzling performance and Sunil Pal was the stand up comedian. Past seniors try to become a part of this fest and they try to live their college life again.

Mainly all the faculties are ex DMETians and having a teaching experience of at least 20 years. This only says the magnitude of their experience and depth knowledge of their subject. All the teachers are also having good contact with the shipping companies as they have served in past in their companies, this helps in getting job in that companies also and make life easier after passing out from college.
