Remarks
NIT Patna is an evolving college, I would say in the end. While it may lag behind to other at one or two parameters it certainly has got credible management & atmosphere which is needed for a student in his college life. And in coming years it may up its position owing to its strong teacher & students quality.
Entrance Preview
IIT JEE: Not selected AIEEE: 16313 AIR (181 Marks) BITSAT: Was getting some stream in Goa campus -Chemical maybe (280 Marks) Going by 2010 trend I could have got NIT Jamshedpur or Durgapur but due to keeping preferences in the order of branch and not college I got NIT Patna under home state category.
Course Curriculum Overview
Course structure is easy initially alike every other college's course structure. But as we move up the semesters it got complex. While it was more theoretical than practical (theory: practical is 60:40) but with changes in course structure in final year(2014) more of practical approach was fitted in the curriculum (50:50 you may say)
Internships Opportunities
No! We have to search for internship by ourselves. While since companies do come such as L&T, Amazon, Infosys sometimes it's not fixed and not always open for everyone. Some don't give stipend (eg L&T) while no knowledge about others.
Placement Experience
Placement statistics: For 2011-15 batch: 80% (almost) Max Placement branch: CSE & IT (somewhere 100%) Min Placement branch: Civil Max Package: 12.1LPA (BPCL) Min Package: 3.15 LPA (IBM) Companies: IBM, Infosys, Ericsson, L&T, C&C, Tata Motors, JSW, Maruti Suzuki, Snapdeal, Oracle, OFSS, Drishti, Reliance Mil, Mu Sigma (18L over 3Years)
College Events
Almost every event that one sees in an engineering college happened in NIT PATNA too. We had lot of clubs (photography, hindi, entrepreneurship, cultural, social service, sports). And events happened round the academic year. The most prominent of them was our techno cultural fest which used to be a big event running for almost a week. It attracted participation from various colleges of Bihar Jharkhand including IIT Patna, BIT Ranchi etc. Sports Meet happened every year in winters .
Fee Structure And Facilities
Being a central government college (of National Importance) it has an affordable fees structure and it is well below the fees of private colleges. At my time I shelled out just 1.4 lakh for 4 year. Now it has gone to 3+ Lakh but it is still less than many college. Also you can get cheaper lens to study in NIT.
Fees and Financial Aid
While there are few scholarship offered by college, it depends upon your income group and caste. Besides loans available to students of NIT are at much cheaper rate than loan available to students of private college and there is a difference of approximately 1 to 2%. At the time of admission and later various banks would put up stall to offer you loan and even without collateral. We have a bank within our campus from where you can get credit too.
Campus Life
Gender ratio differed according to the branches. While it is good for computer science branch it was pathetic for mechanical branch. Overall you can say 2.6:1. In regards to diversity you can guess it with the fact that NIT Patna has students from every state on the map of India. Lot of people are from South & N-E states though maximum proportion of students are from. UP, Delhi, Bihar. There is no trace of politics of any sort of discrimination in the college with presence of people from various ethnic background giving it a real mixed and open campus atmosphere. The college has been spending an enormous amount of money on infrastructure development including labs, class, sports infra & building and the results are visible. Lot of workshop, training events keep on happening round the clock with always there for something for someone. Campus life is awesome as per my experience. I had a great learning time there. While at times you may criticize for lack of one thing or another but all in all its awesome.
Hostel Facilities
Hostel facilities were not good at my time as the newer hostel were still under construction. When I joined for the was no internet facility in hotel rooms but now it has been extended to every hostel. Most of the rooms are sharing while if you are topper you can get single room. There are few hostel rooms (though everyone will get hostel by 2018) so some live outside too. Rents are decent with approx 1500-2000/person if you take a 2BHK apartment or take a PG.
Alumni/Alumna
College seniors were very helpful. In fact at a time they helped out of their way to help us get sponsor for events, internship. Even after the classesthe seniors have been helpful in getting reference for jobs at various companies.
Exam Structure
Exams used to happen as per a fixed schedule which were issued as academic calendar. Labs were almost 3(AVG.) in a week and they were pretty long of almost 2-3hrs. Assignment were a thing of surprise. Though initially it felt hectic but with passing semesters it got easy & chilled.
Admission
Got admission through AIEEE (now called JEE MAINS). Notification was released in September or October. Gave exams in April (for some exams happened in May that year due to question paper leak). After the results were announced online counselling started. There were total 3-4 round with spot round at colleges (now removed). I got CSE in first round of counselling. Went for reporting to NIT Patna with all documents. It all went smooth in a timely manner. Later through internal sliding I got Mechanical.
Faculty
Old ones are really good with depth of knowledge. And considering their experience they know to teach well too. For new ones there would be a mixed reaction. For example my professor in charge for the project was a new faculty at NIT PATNA but he had previous experience at some of the best colleges including IIT. But there are some lethargic one too.
