Remarks
For getting into an IIT you have to first qualify JEE Mains examination and then the JEE Advanced examination. NTA - National Testing Agency releases the forms for jee mains while jee advanced forms are released on its website. I did not avail of any reservation benefits, but there are many of them based on your caste(general, sc, obc, st), your gender(female reservation), and your economic status(general ews- economic weaker section). I think that jee mains exam is replaced by CUET this year and it would not be a good decision, so I want them to conduct jee mains only and not merge it with CUET.
Course Curriculum Overview
So the course curriculum is what attracted me the most. I was always interested in coding, but my bad, at my rank (which was 4367 in JEE Advanced 2022) I was not able to get a circuital branch in the top 7 IITs so I decided to go with chemical engineering so I discussed it with my seniors and teachers that which branch to go for and chemical seemed to be the best option. Faculty to student ratio at IIT Roorkee is almost 19 to 1 which is pretty decent. All the faculties are well qualified and hold degrees from various institutes of national as well as global importance. Most of the faculty members are Ph.D. holders and the teachings are very helpful, but you have to devote extra time to subjects like maths and programming on your own. Currently, the first sem is a compressed semester, so we are having exams almost every fortnight, but generally, they are every month.
Internships Opportunities
Big companies like Google, Microsoft, Meta, etc. offer internship opportunities. Companies offer various roles from junior consultant to technical analyst and the stipend varies greatly depending on the job profile and the company you are employed in.
Placement Experience
Being an IIT all the big companies like Google, Microsoft, Meta, etc. come for recruitment here. The highest package is around 1.7 crore which is an international package and the average package is around 18 lakhs. Almost 80 percent of the students are placed. I would look for a job in a noncore field after getting a degree.
Fees and Financial Aid
As of now, I didn't know about the fee hike policy but the fee is pretty high for a government institute. It's 2 lakh rupees per year and including the hostel and mess facilities, it goes up to 3 lakhs for general and obc candidates, however, the sc and st candidates do not have to bear the tuition fee, so for them, there are only hostel and mess charges which are around 1 lakh rupees a year. But also we have many scholarships like the fee waiver scheme is there according to which if you are a general or an obc candidate and if your family annual income is between 1 and 5 lakhs, then you get 2/3 rd of your tuition fee returned and if your family annual income is below 1 lakh rupees, then you get all of your tuition fees returned. Also, other scholarships are there namely the merit cum need(mcn) scholarship which is provided if you are in the top 25 percent of your batch and your family annual income is below 5 lakh rupees.
Campus Life
The annual cultural fest is THOMSO which is conducted every year in the month of October or November and the annual tech fest is COGNIZANCE which is conducted every year in the month of February. At IIT Roorkee we have Mahatma Gandhi Central Library which holds many boos, e-journals, and other things like research papers, newspapers, and much more. All the classrooms are acquired with both smart boards as well as blackboards, there are comfortable chairs and tables and the classroom are as large to hold almost 400 students. There are many clubs for sports and other curricular activities like stand-up comedy, fine arts, and many technical clubs for artificial intelligence, machine learning, game development, virtual reality, and much more. All of the clubs and social groups at IIT Roorkee are managed by students.
Hostel Facilities
The first-year male students are provided with a separate hostel which is Rajendra Bhawan and female students are provided with Sarojini Bhawan to minimize the risk of ragging. There are single double and triple sharing rooms. The food in the mess is quite hygienic, but it does not taste homely. The mess menu is updated every week. Also, you would find night canteens opened at late night and there are eateries available throughout the day. Registration for the hostel is done simultaneously with admission and it costs 1 lakh a year including all the hostel and mess charges.
