Remarks
College administration is really bad. Though student bodies keep pushing them. Things are changing here but at really slow pace.
Entrance Preview
I took IIT JEE examination. I scored 170/360 in JEE Advance. I opted for this college because it the oldest institute in India and I wanted to pursue Civil Engineering and it is known for Civil Engineering. Plus, this college is located very near to Himalayas so you can travel as much as you want.
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is bit old. Not much modified after it became IIT. Plus, curriculum is very strict. You don't get flexibility to choose subjects you want. Though the academics is not tough. Curriculum is precise and you are taught only what you need. No need to read a lot to score good numbers.
Internships Opportunities
College provide internship in summer of third year. Many big companies come for the Internships like Schlumburger, Goldman Sachs, American Express, Citi Corp, Flipkart, Amazon, Microsoft, Samsung, ITC, P&G, L&T, Adobe, etc. Stipend in general is really good. On an average each student gets 30000 per month stipend. Though highest stipend can be as high as 150000 per month.
Placement Experience
Placements are really good. Many big companies come for the placements like Schlumburger, Goldman Sachs, American Express, Citi Corp, Amazon, Microsoft, Samsung, ITC, P&G, L&T, Adobe, etc. Packages are really good. For example microsoft offered 80 Lac per annum. Adobe 35 lacs per annum, GS 30 lac/annum, Citi 15 lac /annum, American Express 12 lac/annum. Average package differ from branch to branch. CS students get relly high average package ( > 20 lac/annum). For other branches avg package is around 10 lac/ annum.
College Events
All of the major festivals (Holi, Diwali, Navratri, Lohri, Kite festivals) are celebrated. College has its own three major festivals. THOMSO which is cultural festival and second largest in India, with footfall of more than 3000 students from the other colleges. COGNIZANCE is technical festival where many tech events take place. Many big personalities come for lecture here during this festival (Including Nobel Prize Winners). Third one is SHRISHTI which is organized by Hobbies club.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Fee is quite high. For B.Tech you need to pay 68000 per semester. Now this figure is at 120000 per semester. But you can get a loan easily and there are many scholarship options for the students with not so good financial background. Apart from this extra expenses are really less and surrounding and travel is quite cheap.
Fees and Financial Aid
The loans are easily available from SBI and PNB branches which are in the campus. Loan procedure is really smooth, you don't need to worry about it much. Also, institute provides merit scholarship to the students with weak financial background.
Campus Life
Campus life is best here. Too many groups, social activities, sports, technical activities, research facilities, whatever you need this is best. Gender ration is what you expect in IITs 1/8 (Girls / Boys). People don't care about religion here, a student is identified based on his/her achievement. PARTIES never stop here. And the campus is lively 24 * 7.
Hostel Facilities
Hostels are really good. In first year you get sharing hostel, but after that you get the personal room. Though hostel are not co-ed. So, girl / boy interaction is really less. Hostel fees is 0. But you need to pay for mess around 14000 per semester. Mess food is really bad. But you will survive it, as many people did.
Alumni/Alumna
Being the oldest institute Alumni network is really huge. You get Alumni in any field, any company and even in Govt bodies. And senior-junior interaction is best. Seniors are always there for your help, they will help you at any time of the day. My senior guided me to how to apply for internships and I was selected for internship in really good company.
Exam Structure
Exam structure is really good. You only need to read what you are taught. Academics is really chill here. No need to worry about your CGPA much, if you push a little bit you can easily get 8+ CGPA here. Being said that there are two exams mid terms and end terms. Labs are also chill, just that you need to be present in the labs.
Admission
You need to give JEE Main and if you clear this exam you need to give JEE Advance. Those who qualify in this exam get a chance to fill up the choices for IITs. And based on your score you will be alloted the college. There are three/ four main rounds. And after this if seats remain vacant they will go for additional rounds. I was selected for IIT Roorkee in my second round only.
Faculty
Being the oldest institute, college has many big names in professors. Some of them are really talented. However, average age of the professors is really high, so they don't understand or they don't want to understand views of the current generations. Also, professor to student ratio is low. However, they started recruiting many young professors and things are changing now.
