Remarks
St. Stephen's is one of the best colleges in our country and its cut offs speak the same. The overall experience is quite amazing and educational. Although it is a great college, it has issues just like other colleges with regard to administration and investment in infrastructure. I believe there are certain things that can still be made better. Our college has students from all part of India and so it is quite an enhancing experience to be amongst the people of so many ethnicities.
Entrance Preview
The college had a cut off requirement and there is a form filled online which requires us to provide a statement of purpose and answer the question,'why (the subject you have chosen)?'. A list of shortlisted candidates comes out post which there are an aptitude test and interview. The list of selected candidates comes out a week after that. I selected philosophy because it seemed intriguing and something that I could see myself really enjoying.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is designed by the university but honestly, it can be much better. I think the university needs to put in more effort into designing the course curriculum because it has major flaws. To compensate for that, our professors make sure that we explore the subject beyond the prescribed syllabus. That helps us to learn a lot more and is quite helpful.
Internships Opportunities
The college provides internships to willing students. Different committees are involved in creating internship opportunities for the college students. Here, it is believed that classroom education is just one portion of complete education so students are encouraged to do winter/summer internships. The Placement Cell is very active in providing internship opportunities to students. All the internships aren't paid. Some of them are and the stipend varies according to the different profiles. I am not aware of the exact amount that is provided.
Placement Experience
The placement cell of our college is very good. Most of the students who sit for placements do get placed. The highest packages from Delhi University are usually from my college. Depending on the different courses, different companies visit the campus. Many major companies visit the campus and recruit a large number of students. Some of the companies that visit our college are, HTC, Samsung, Infosys, Wipro etc. Most of the students opt for higher education instead of a job, to further enhance their knowledge. A 3-year undergraduate course doesn’t really fetch that great profile.
College Events
Various events happen frequently in college. The best one, I’d say is Onam, which is celebrated in the Odd Semester. All the girls are dressed upon traditional South Indian saree and it is such a pleasant sight. Different societies keep organizing their events and they are quite impressive. Other events are Talent Night, Departmental fests, Christmas celebration, graduation day and the list is countless. Every week there are at least 2 events in our college. Our college fest “Harmony” is a 3-day fest that includes lots of food, music, and games. Coming to footfall, it is limited but surely great.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee is quite affordable. The admission process is very difficult and that's where students struggle. Once you get into Stephen's, the fee isn't that much of an issue. It varies around 16000-18000, depending on what facilities are used. This fee includes tution and exam fee and if someone wishes to avail hostel, then he/she has to pay extra. Since the college is reputed and graduating from Stephen's is quite huge in itself, the fee is worth every penny.
Fees and Financial Aid
Yes, the college provides scholarships to students. They are provided to students based on their personal needs. I did not avail one so I am not sure about the details regarding this. As far as the loan is considered, students are supposed to make their own arrangements because college doesn't help with the loan.
Campus Life
We get ample opportunities to explore our inner talents. We have societies for various extracurricular activities. Many such societies exist in college which actively organize various events that are quite interesting. All of them are open societies so everyone can participate which is a great way to provide different opportunities to students based on their personal interests.
Hostel Facilities
I didn't stay in the hostel so I don't know much about it. Some students really like it, while some don't. Curfew timings are different for girls and boys. No ACs or coolers are available, just a fan per room. The buildings are very old but, aesthetically pleasing. I am not aware of the interiors as such since I haven't visited the hostel.
Alumni/Alumna
A very good student-alumni interaction platform exists in college. We get to interact quite frequently with the alumni. It is a great experience as we get to hear their inspiring stories and get an idea of real-life scenarios. Overall, a great alumni network and they keep coming to college so interaction is pretty good too.
Exam Structure
It isn't exactly a hectic schedule but one wouldn't call it chill either. Exams happen on a fairly regular basis, not too often and the approach isn't too laid back either. Overall, it's a good culture. It encourages a healthy learning atmosphere. The continuous evaluation process ensures that students are regular with their studies.
Faculty
All the teachers are great. All of them boast of doctorates, many of them with multiple PhDs. We also have a great student-teacher ratio (13:1) and that helps students understand all concepts in a much better way. For the same reason, our classes are highly interactive and effective. The entire class atmosphere is very healthy and quite empowering. One feels free to approach the teachers for the smallest of the doubts.
