What Students Say
Likes
- the campus is very beautiful, lots of greenery, the hostels are at walking distance to the classes. the boys hostel for first year students is pretty well maintained.
- the curfew timings for boys are also very flexible, we can go out anytime at night. there are so many places to chill with friends
- outside the campus there are tea gardens also. there is a shop at NITS gate which opens at midnight to sell maggi and poori-sabji to students.
Dislikes
- the water in the campus is not good. it has lots of chlorine and iron, not good for hair and skin
- the food quality at first year hostel is not that good, however it improves drastically as we move to senior hostels
- the classes are not that well maintained and get very messy during rainy seasons as water sometimes enters the classes
Course Curriculum Overview
the first year course curriculum is somewhat weird, as we are made to study all subjects. I am a CSE student but we had to study mechanics, physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, EGD, electronics etc. there was only one programming subject in the entire first year. we have to go to mechanical workshop to do welding and wood cutting and all that stuff
Internships Opportunities
there are a lot of good internship opportunites in the campus from 2nd year onwards. big comanies come to campus and provide internhips to students. microsoft gives around 1.5 lakh for a two month internship, same with amazon also. students from the institute are very skilled and have cracked GSoC a lot of times. students from NIT silchar have also caracked international packages
Placement Experience
the only reason i joined this college was that it was in my homestate and the placements were pretty good. infact CSE departments average package is 24 LPA. overall average is 18 LPA. big companies visit the campus like microsoft, amazon, oracle, atlassian. the highest package went at around 80-85 LPA and overall placement percentage was 95% almost. my plans after getting the degree are quite straighfroward. i want a good job in the IT sector.
Fees and Financial Aid
the overall fees is around rs 10 lakh considering all the tuition fees and hostel+food fees. it is 76,000 pers semester + 22,500 for hostel. below 1 lakh income students can get full tuition cfee waiver and 1-5 lakh can get 66% waiver many scholariships are available for students from backward categories. many big companies like amazon, microsoft, oracle, atlassian come to the campus to hire students. there are also a lot of internship opportunities from 2nd year onwards.
Campus Life
the overall experience was mixed. there are a lot of clubs in the campus,n like aaveg for dance, symphonits for music, E-cell, coding club, Machine learning club, GDSC, finance club etc. we have two major annunal fests- tecnoesis in october(tech fest) and incandescense in february(cultural fest) and many other minor fests. we have asia's largest digital library and a pretty good physical library too. all important books are available there. sports facilities are also good in the campus. there are badminton, football, cricket, volleyball, basketball, lawn tennis, table tennis, kabaddi facilities in the campus. the clubs are quite useful for overall development, but joing a lot of them is unnecessary and time consuming
Hostel Facilities
hostel facilities are okay okay. the rooms are double seater, there are LAN ports. LAN services often get disrupted. food quality is average. mess workers dont give extra paneer or chicken pieces. washrooms are sometimes clean sometimes not. hostel experience would be pretty bad without good friends. there is a balcony in first year hostel rooms. fees per semester is rs 22,500.
Admission
admission is done via JEE mains. the fee details can be found on official institute website easily. cutoff for CSE was 25,000 rank for homestate. the admission process was very hectic, as it was during august, very hot weather and no substantial arrangements to hold so many students. all the hotels were already booked in the city. hostel allotment process was also very hectic as the rooms were not clean and no crowd controlling was being done. exams are held twice in a semester, mid sems and end sems. there is a ggap of around 1.5- 2 months between these exams.
Faculty
most of the faculty is pretty well qualified, some from foreign universities, some from other IITS. some facult are pretty good at their job, dont burden the students with lots of assignments and projects. teachers of some department are very helpful and solve doubts even after classes have ended. we can interact with them on whatsapp, they are more than happy to help
